Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 黄芩), bitter in taste, cold in nature. Its action ascends to clear and drain Lung Fire (Fei Huo, 肺火), and descends to clear and drain Bladder Fire (Pangguang Huo, 膀胱火). It is used for treating Wulin (Five Types of Strangury, 五淋) in men, and sudden Binglou (Sudden Profuse Uterine Bleeding, 暴崩) in women; it regulates menstruation, calms the fetus, and clears heat. If there is heat-fire causing restlessness within the fetus, it clears fetal heat and eliminates excess fire and excess heat from the Six Channels (Liu Jing, 六经). This refers to the principle that excess fire can be drained, and Huangqin is such a herb. It is frequently used for heat syndromes.
(Extraordinary Formula) For treating women with excessive menstrual flow, which is about to develop into sudden profuse bleeding. Effective.
Huangqin (3g, stir-fried with wine) Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, 黄柏, 3g, stir-fried until black) Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma, 香附, 4.5g, soaked in child's urine) Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 白芍, 3g) Guiban (Testudinis et Chelonis Carapax et Plastrum, 龟板, 6g, fried with butter) Qiuchunpi (Ailanthi Cortex, 臭椿皮, 6g) Tuaiye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium, 土艾叶, 3g, stir-fried) No guiding herb needed, decoct and take orally.
(Additional Note) Excessive menstrual flow that does not stop indicates insufficiency of Yin blood, which agitates the fire in the Spleen Earth and Bao Luo (Uterine Collaterals, 胞络), causing blood to leak beyond normal limits. This formula uses Huangqin and Huangbai to restrain fire, and Baishao and Guiban to nourish Yin. This embodies the method of "strengthening the master of Water to suppress the sunlight." The bitterness of Aiye and the astringency of Qiunchunpi are used to secure collapse and stop bleeding. Furthermore, the pungency of Xiangfu is used to open up stagnant heat.
