[Li Shizhen said] Take 2 liang of arsenolite (Pishi), half a liang each of Semen Momordicae (Mubiezi Ren) and Semen Crotonis (Badou Ren), and 2 qian of realgar (Shashi), grind them into powder. Mix with oil from Semen Momordicae (Mubiezi You) and petroleum ether (Shinao You) to form a solid mass, wrap it in oiled paper, bury it in a soil pit for 49 days, then take it out, break it into small pieces, and store it in porcelain vessels for use.
[Li Shizhen said] Take one large crucible, crush 4 liang of Qingmoshi (Lengshi/Melanterite), mix it evenly with 4 liang of Nuxitrum (Xiaoshi). Surround it tightly with 15 jin of charcoal fire and heat until the Nuxitrum is completely burnt out and the stone turns golden in color. Take it out, grind it into powder, wash away the toxicity of Nuxitrum with water, dry it, and use it.
[Li Shizhen said] Whenever used in pills or powders, seal the container tightly with clay, roast over top fire to remove "fire toxicity," grind finely, perform wet grinding (shuifei), and dry before use.
[Chen Cangqi said] When used in medicine, burn until red-hot, remove the coarse parts, and then use.
[Chen Cangqi said] When used in medicine, burn until red-hot, quench in vinegar three or four times, grind into powder, and use after wet grinding (shuifei).
[Li Shizhen said] Regarding salt, people often adulterate it with alum (Fan), Nuxitrum (Xiao), ash, stones, etc. For medicinal use, it must be dissolved in water, clarified to remove sediment, and boiled until white, which indicates good quality.
[Anonymous author said] When preparing, it must be boiled dry in fresh ginger juice and then ground into powder. For every 10 liang of material, use 1 yi (approx. 12 liang) of fresh ginger.
[Li Shizhen said] Preparation method: Take 10 jin of pure Puxiao (Mirabilite/Puerariae Radix? Context implies Mirabilite/Natrii Sulfas based on context of purification), dissolve in 1 shi of running water, filter out impurities, and expose overnight under stars and moon. Remove water to obtain the crystal; expose again overnight, then take out. Place in a large sand jar, pack it firmly, seal the mouth with thick salt mud half an inch thick without covering the lid, place in a furnace, and use 10 jin of charcoal fire, starting from gentle fire (Wenhuo) to strong fire (Wuhuo). Once boiling stabilizes, cover the mouth with a tile, re-seal with mud, and roast with 15 jin of charcoal fire from above. Let it cool for one fu period (approx. 2 hours), take out, place on the ground through paper, cover with a basin for three days to remove "fire toxicity," grind into powder. For every 1 jin, add raw Gancao (Licorice Root), and store in bottles.
[Chen Cangqi said] True Xiaoshi (Nuxitrum), decoct in willow branch soup for three shichen (6 hours); if the liquid reduces, add hot water; stop when the "fire is subdued." [Anonymous author said] When using Xiaoshi, roast in fire seventy times. [Anonymous author said]
[Lei Xiao said] Whenever used, it must be wet-ground (shuifei) to remove dust and impurities, placed in porcelain vessels, and boiled dry in a double boiler to reduce its toxicity. [Li Shizhen said] Nowadays, people mostly clean it by wet grinding, boil it dry with vinegar until frost-like, scrape it off, and use it.
