[Li Shizhen said] When Ganqi (Dried Lacquer) is used for medicinal purposes, it must be crushed and stir-fried until cooked. Otherwise, it will damage the stomach and intestines. If it is wet lacquer, boiling it until dry is better. There are also methods of burning it to retain its properties (charred but retaining efficacy).
[Lei Xiao said] Whenever Chun Gen (Cortex Toosendan or Ailanthus Root) is used, the parts not near the western end of the tree are considered superior. After harvesting, mix it with raw scallions and steam for half a day. Then chop it finely, place it in a bag, hang it on the south side of the house, and dry it in the shade for use.
[Li Shizhen said] The bark of Chun (Toona sinensis), Chu (Ailanthus altissima), and their roots should have the rough outer bark scraped off, dried in the shade, and sliced and roasted before use.
[Chen Jiamo said] After harvesting and sun-drying, mix it thoroughly with wine, steam until the bark becomes soft, scrape off the outer skin, take the inner flesh, and remove the core. When using the flesh, do not use the core; when using the core, do not use the flesh. If using the core, crush it, boil it in fermented grain water for one shichen (two hours), and then sun-dry. The fruit that falls after the flowers fade is called Shi Zhuyu (Lithocarpus fructus), which is not used medicinally.
[Su Song said] After harvesting, discard those with single seeds or five seeds; only select those with two or three seeds. Crush them with a copper hammer, soak them in black ox milk overnight, and steam before use.
[Kou Zongshi said] Harvest before flowering; aged material is superior. Stir-fry before use. Dyers boil it in water for one boil, remove it, and form the thick residue into cakes, which produce brighter colors.
[Lei Xiao said] For use, select those that are red, plump, and free from insect damage. Soak them in fresh well water overnight. Scrape off the rough bark with a copper knife, roast thoroughly with su (animal fat/butter) repeatedly, and beat to remove... [text missing] ...Yi...
[Lei Xiao said] Select those that are round, hard, and free from insect damage. Cook them in a steamer, peel off one layer of hard skin, take two pieces of white inner flesh, remove the yellow part, cut with a copper knife, and sun-dry for use. The yellow part consumes kidney qi.
[Lei Xiao said] Do not let it come into contact with copper or iron, and avoid sudden heat/fire shock. It is best to use small granules without kernels. Grind it completely in a mortar with fermented grain water, roast until dry, grind again, and use when it turns the color of black rhino horn.
[Li Shizhen said] When using Helile (Chebulae Fructus / Terminalia chebula), soak it in wine, then steam for one shichen. Scrape off the seed with a knife, take the flesh, chop it, roast it, and use. If using the seed, remove the flesh.
[Li Shizhen said] Do not use material from three or four years old as it lacks potency. Use material from trees over twenty years old; although the heart may be hollow, it is effective. Trees that grow only on one side, facing west, are considered good. Peel off the rough bark, chop finely, steam from Si hour to Wei hour (9 AM to 3 PM), take out, roast until dry, and use.
