[Li Rui stated]: Persimmons preserved in water have a cold nature, while those preserved in salt contain toxicity. [Li Shizhen stated]: This refers to the preservation of persimmons. Besides storage in water or soaking in brine, there is another method where ripe persimmons are washed with ash lye three or four times until the juice is absorbed and placed in containers; after more than ten days, they become edible, but this form is not suitable for treating diseases.
[Li Shizhen stated]: According to Li's *Shi Jing* (Food Classic): Use one dou (a unit of volume) of glutinous rice (washed clean) and fifty large dried persimmons, pound them together into powder, and steam for consumption. If the texture is too dry, mix it with mashed boiled dates.
[A physician stated]: When processing pomegranate peel, leaves, and roots, avoid contact with iron. Regardless of whether they are fresh or dried, soak them overnight in fermented grain water (jiang shui), then remove and use. The resulting liquid resembles ink.
[A physician stated]: When processing citrus peels, do not use pomelo peel or wrinkled peel; these two types are unusable. During preparation, one must remove the white inner membrane layer, chop finely, wrap in a carp, and leave overnight. Take out and use the next morning. [Su Song stated]: In materia medica texts, tangerine peel and pomelo peel were grouped together, which is likely a transmission error. Later generations, unaware of this, mistook pomelo peel for tangerine peel, causing significant harm to patients. [A physician stated]: Pomelo peel and tangerine peel have different properties; mixing them causes issues.
[Li Shizhen stated]: Qing Ju Pi (Green Tangerine Peel) is the peel of unripe, green oranges. It is thin, glossy, and has a strong, aromatic odor. Nowadays, many people counterfeit it using small kumquats, small pomelos, or small oranges. Careful differentiation is essential. For medicinal use, soak in hot water to remove the pith, slice, mix with vinegar, and stir-fry on pottery shards before use.
[Li Shizhen stated]: When using Xing Ren (Apricot Kernel), bake on new pottery until fragrant, remove the shell, take the kernel, crush it, and add to the prescription.
[Su Song stated]: Collect Bai Gen (White Root, likely referring to a specific root like Puerariae Radix Alba or similar contextually implied root, though text says "white root"), scrape off the yellow skin, soak in water, add a small amount of Alum powder (Fan), leave overnight, wash clean to remove slime, dry by baking, and use. [Commentary]: Merely edible. [Wait until fully dry... raw use after ten years...]
[Li Shizhen stated]: For Li Gen Pi (Plum Root Bark), select branches growing towards the east, scrape off the rough outer bark, roast until yellow, and use medicinally. *Bie Lu* (Record of Distinct Medicinals) does not specify which type of plum root to use, nor does it mention... white bark.
[*Bie Lu* stated]: Harvest in May. [Tao Hongjing stated]: When using Xing Ren (Apricot Kernel), soak in hot water to remove the skin and tips, stir-fry until yellow. Alternatively, stir-fry with wheat bran. [A physician stated]: At noon, take out and sun-dry.
