长短之法也。
The character "Pian" (Chapter/Section) is absent in all extant versions. Jian An notes that the text discusses the length, size, and degrees of curvature and extension of the stomach and intestines, hence the chapter title. It is suspected that this chapter was originally one with the subsequent "Jue Gu Pian" (Chapter on Fasting), later divided into two by later editors.
[The Stomach] is nine cun long. The mouth opening is two and a half cun wide. Zhang Yun states: "Chang" refers to depth; "Guang" refers to width.
Huiyan (Epiglottis). Zhang Yun states: The Huiyan is located above the throat. It serves to separate food and drink from respiration, preventing them from mixing. The chapter "You Hui Wu Yan" states: The Huiyan is the gate of voice production.
The Yanmen (Pharyngeal opening) weighs ten liang. Zhang Yun states: Yanmen is the esophagus. Its name is Yan, reaching a length of one chi six cun, which includes the stomach chamber. Yang's commentary on Nan Jing Chapter 42 states: Yan is used for swallowing. It is also called Ai, referring to the critical passage for air flow. Yan is the connection to the stomach. The original text reads "twelve liang". Jian An notes: Below "one chi six cun", Nan Jing contains sixteen characters: "Houlong weighs twelve liang, is two cun wide, and one chi two cun nine fen long." It is likely these were omitted in this classic. Yang's commentary states: Houlong is hollow, indicating its emptiness allows for breath passage. It is the connection to the lungs, the pathway for respiration.
The [Stomach's] curved and extended... Zhang Yun states: Ququ refers to winding or tortuous paths. Da refers to the circumference. Jing refers to the straight length. The rest follows this pattern. The chapter "Ping Ren Jue Gu" states: The grain within usually retains two dou, and water one dou five sheng when full.
Small Intestine (ends) three zhang three chi long. Nan Jing and Jia Yi Jing read "two chi". Ma Yun states: The upper opening of the small intestine is the lower opening of the stomach. The small intestine attaches posteriorly to the spine, looping from the left in overlapping folds, accumulating injected matter to enter the Hui Chang (Coiled Large Intestine). It attaches externally above the navel, rotating with sixteen curves, four cun wide, with an oral diameter of eight fen minus a small third (i.e., half a fen). Its length is three zhang three chi. Zhang Yun states: Its lower opening pours into the Hui Chang, externally near one cun above the navel, at the Shuifen acupoint. "Eight fen minus a small third" means beyond eight fen, there remains a small third of one fen. The rest follows this analogy. Zhi Yun states: Small third is seven and a half fen. Jian An notes: In Shi Ji, "Xiang Yu Ji", it says Han possesses more than half of the world. Wei Zhao's commentary states: Of three parts, two are Tai Ban (large majority/half-plus), one is Xiao Ban (small minority/half-minus). Yang's commentary on Nan Jing Chapter 42 also states: Two-thirds is Tai Ban, one-third is Xiao Ban. From this deduction, the small third of a fen is over three li and three hao; the small third of a cun is not quite three fen three li three hao; the large majority of a cun is not quite six fen six li six hao. Thus, Zhang's annotation seems correct.
Hui Chang, opposite the navel (ends) two zhang one chi long. Zhang Yun states: Hui Chang is the large intestine. Ye Ji means accumulation like leaves, implying layered stacking. The upper opening of the large intestine is the lower opening of the small intestine, turning left below the navel to accumulate in the Guang Chang. Yang's commentary on Nan Jing Chapter 42 states: The large intestine is the Hui Chang. Named so because of its coiling. Jian An notes: Zhi Yun states: Diameter one cun. The small third of a cun is one cun five fen. This is likely incorrect.
Guang Chang attaches to the spine (ends) two chi eight cun long. Ma Yun states: Guang Chang is the rectum. Guang Chang attaches to the spine to receive matter from the Hui Chang, looping left and right in leaf-like layers above and below the spine. Pi Da (wide/open) eight cun, diameter two cun plus the large majority of a cun, i.e., two cun seven fen. Zhang Yun states: Guang Chang is the lower segment of the large intestine. Also named Zhichang (Rectum). The rectum is posterior, winding down along the spine, hence "Fu Ji" (attaching to the spine). Fu means spread/distribute. Ye Ji above and below the spine refers to stacking above and below the spine until the coccyx. Pi is identical to Bi (open/wide). Because it is the widest, it is called Pi Da eight cun. Zhi Yun states: Guang Chang is the rectum inside the anus. Diameter two cun plus the large majority of a cun is two cun seven and a half fen. Jian An notes: Fu Ji, Ma interprets as Fu Ji (attach to spine), suggesting Fu is a textual error for Fu. Zhang's annotation is difficult to reconcile.
From the entry to the exit of the stomach and intestines... Zhang's edition reads "Chu" instead of "Suo". Zhang Yun states: This summarizes the total length from entering via the mouth to exiting via defecation. Thirty-two curves, combining the small and large intestines. Yang's commentary on Nan Jing Chapter 42 states: According to Jia Yi Jing, the stomach and intestines are six zhang four cun four fen long, hence the difference. Nan Jing states: The stomach and intestines are five zhang eight chi four cun long. Jia Yi Jing counts from the mouth to the Hui Chang, thus longer. This classic counts from the stomach to the intestines, thus shorter. This mutually illuminates without error. Ding states: Previously, the diameters and circumferences of the stomach and intestines varied. When it said the stomach is one chi five cun wide and five cun in diameter, that is consistent. Small intestine diameter eight fen, width two cun four fen is consistent. Now saying two and a half cun is the small third of a fen. Hui Chang diameter one cun half, width four cun five fen. Now saying four cun width is short by five fen. Guang Chang diameter one cun half, width seven cun five fen. Now saying eight cun width has a surplus of five fen. Regarding sheng, dou, cun, and chi measures: First establish the chi ruler, then create the sheng, dou, scale, and liang, all based on Tong Shen Cun (Body-inch). Using the chi to make the dou: top width one chi, bottom width seven cun, height four cun, thickness three fen, capacity ten sheng. For inch-based finger-joint measures: one square cun equals two liang, sixteen liang equal one jin. This system of Tong Shen Cun rulers, dou, and sheng dimensions serves as the method for the weight and length of human stomach and intestines.
