If the Shaoyin (Lesser Yin) pulse appears on the left, it should not be present there but instead appears on the right; the Yang pulses originally reside on the right but shift to the left. This represents the position exchanged by Shaoyin, which is neither the Shaoyang (Lesser Yang) nor the Taiyang (Greater Yang) pulse. Therefore, it is termed "Jiao" (Crossing/Intersecting), and the presence of Jiao indicates death. The term "Fan" (Reversal) refers to a situation where, in a young patient, the Shaoyin pulse should normally be found at the Chi (Cun) position but instead appears at the Cun (Inch) position; the Yang pulse, originally at the Cun, shifts to the Chi. Thus, it is called "Cun-Chi Fan" (Reversal of Inch and Cubit positions), and the presence of Cun-Chi Fan indicates death. However, it must be that both Yin and Yang aspects exhibit "Jiao" to constitute Jiao, and both Cun and Chi positions exhibit "Fan" to constitute Fan. If only the expected pulse at its proper position is absent, this is merely an absence of Yin-Yang correspondence, indicating a minor illness, and does not fall under the category of Jiao or Fan.

The method involves starting from the tip of the middle finger for Nan Zheng (Southern Sovereign) years beginning with Zi, and from the base of the middle finger for Bei Zheng (Northern Sovereign) years beginning with Zi, rotating counter-clockwise. The location corresponding to the year's value is the position where the pulse should not be felt. For example, in Nan Zheng Zi years starting from the fingertip, both Cun positions should not be felt; in Chou years, the left Cun should not be felt; in Yin years, the left Chi should not be felt. Counting from the right to the end, these are all positions where the pulse should not be felt in Nan Zheng years. Similarly, for Bei Zheng Zi years starting from the finger base, counting from right to left to the end, these are all positions where the pulse should not be felt in Bei Zheng years.
Tian Fu (Heavenly Harmony) acts as the law enforcer, akin to an assisting minister. Sui Hui (Annual Harmony) acts as the executor of orders, akin to a regional governor. Tai Yi Tian Fu (Supreme One Heavenly Harmony) acts as a noble person, akin to a monarch.
Tian Fu occurs when the Si Tian (Sovereign Heaven) Qi and the Zhong Yun (Central Movement) Qi share the same elemental nature. Those afflicted by this pathogen suffer rapid and critical illness due to its heavy weight/influence. Sui Hui occurs when the Zhong Yun Qi and the Sui Zhi (Year Branch) Qi share the same elemental nature, except for the years of Yin, Shen, Si, and Hai. Those afflicted by this pathogen suffer slow-progression and persistent illness. Tong Tian Fu (Same Heavenly Harmony) and Tong Sui Hui (Same Annual Harmony) occur when the Zhong Yun Qi and the Zai Quan (Inquiring Spring) Qi share the same elemental nature. Yang years are designated Tong Tian Fu, while Yin years are designated Tong Sui Hui. Tian Hui, Sui Hui, and Yun Hui are collectively referred to as the "Three Harmonies." Tai Yi Tian Fu occurs when the Zhong Yun, Si Tian, and Sui Zhi all share the same elemental nature, termed the Noble Person. Affliction by this pathogen leads to sudden death. In the years of Wu Wu, Ji Chou, Ji Wei, and Yi You, Tai Yi resides in the Kan Palace for 46 days starting from the Winter Solstice, moves to Gen Palace at Start of Spring, to Zhen Palace at Spring Equinox, staying 46 days in each palace according to solar terms. Only the Xun Palace and Qian Palace have 45 days. Upon reaching Qian Palace, it returns to Kan Palace, continuing this cycle endlessly, ending and beginning anew.
