Pian Feng (Hemiplegia) manifests as motor impairment of the left limbs or the right limbs. When located on the left, it is termed "Tan" (flaccid paralysis), which is due to Blood Deficiency. When located on the right, it is termed "Huan" (spastic paralysis), which is due to Qi Deficiency. The condition of having Tan on the left and Huan on the right indicates a deficiency of both Qi and Blood. Generally, one should first moxa Baihui (DU20), followed by Hegu (LI4). If there is pain in one side, with numbness of the arm and hand, and spasms making extension difficult, moxibustion should be applied to Shousanli (LI10), combined with Mangu (SI4). If the pain is severe such that lifting objects is impossible, moxibustion should be applied to Jianyu (LI15). For spasmodic pain in both hands and arms that are thin and weak, moxibustion should be applied to Quchi (LI11). For hemiplegia, moxibustion should be applied to Huantiao (GB30). Applying moxibustion according to these acupoints will naturally dispel the disease.
Xuan (Vertigo/Dizziness) refers to blurred vision. Yun (Dizziness/Lightheadedness) refers to a sensation of head heaviness or spinning. There are five causes for this pathology: First, without Phlegm, there is no Xuan; Second, without Fire, there is no Yun; Third, Liver Wood stirring generates internal Wind; Fourth, Kidney Water fails to nourish Liver Wood; Fifth, Spleen Earth deficiency causes Liver Wood to shake. If physicians do not differentiate among these, medications often prove ineffective. In such cases, moxibustion on Shenting (DU24) will ensure safety and efficacy. If the treatment has not yet hit the mark, moxibustion on Ganshu (BL18) will certainly yield results.
The Classics state: Lung Heat causing the lung leaves to become scorched and dry leads to Wei Syndrome (Flaccidity Syndrome). Wei Syndrome refers to weakness of the feet preventing walking. Its symptoms fall into five categories, which must be clearly understood. Generally, Wei Syndrome belongs to the Lung, Mai Wei (Vessel Flaccidity) belongs to the Heart, Jin Wei (Tendon Flaccidity) belongs to the Liver, Rou Wei (Muscle Flaccidity) belongs to the Spleen, and Gu Wei (Bone Flaccidity) belongs to the Kidney. Treatment should always begin with moxibustion on Zusanli (ST36); in severe cases, Sanyinjiao (SP6) should also be moxa-ed. When the moxibustion method is appropriate, its efficacy surpasses that of decoctions and powders.
