(Chuanwu Tou) Pungent, hot, toxic. Its shape resembles the top of a large taro; if it is not round and regular, it serves as a distinguishing feature. Its processing methods and contraindications are the same as those for Fuzi (Prepared Lateral Root of Aconitum).
Wutou (Aconiti Radix), named for its resemblance to the head of a crow. The bifurcated form resembling an open crow's beak is called Wu Hui (Aconiti Radetlax Preparata). Both names are derived from their shapes.
Harvesting should take place in the eighth or ninth lunar months. Wutou harvested in spring is called Wutou, while that harvested in winter is called Fuzi.
(Caowu) Pungent, hot, highly toxic. It is large and long with few spines and a solid texture. Its processing and contraindications are also similar to Fuzi.
(Tian Nan Xing) Pungent, hot, highly toxic. Its shape resembles Wutou, referring to the wild variety. There is no fermentation method; it is black on the outside and white on the inside, wrinkled and dry. It can be used raw or processed, or prepared with Black Bean, Lou Gua (Trichosanthis Fructus), Bei Mu (Fritillariae Bulbus), Bai Lian (Paeoniae Rubra Radix), Bai... [Text cuts off].
(Bai Fu Zi) Pungent, greatly warm, toxic. Process by removing the skin and umbilical scar before use. Bai Fu Zi is available everywhere, but people do not know how to use it correctly. Some mistakenly substitute it with Bai Hua Shuang Luan Ju (Chrysanthemum indicum var. laticeps), which is incorrect!
(Ban Xia) Pungent, warm, toxic. Remove the skin and umbilical scar. Soak in decoction in a vessel for five to seven days, changing the water three to four times daily to wash away the saliva/mucus. Sun-dry for use. Alternatively, roast over fire, or boil with Zao Jia (Gleditsiae Spina), Bai Fan (Alumen), and Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens). Use Shu Qi (Herba Perillae) as a guiding herb. It is incompatible with Mang Cao (Agastache rugosa) and fears Fuzi, Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), and Sheng Jiang. Raw form can... [Continuation regarding Tian Nan Xing] To make Nan Xing Qu (Arisaema Fermented Powder): Grind Arisaema into powder, mix with Ginger Juice and Alum Water to form small cakes. Place in a basket, cover with Mulberry leaves (Chu Ye). Wait for yellow mold to grow, then harvest, sun-dry, and store.
To make Dan Xing (Gall-bladder Arisaema): Grind Arisaema into powder. In the twelfth lunar month, collect bile from a male ox, mix with the powder, insert into the gallbladder, and hang in a ventilated place to dry. The older, the better. After six or seven cycles of processing, the toxicity is eliminated, and it becomes usable.
[Ban Xia continued] Pungent, neutral, toxic. Select plump, white rhizomes, wash away dirt, soak in water for five days, changing water daily. Remove the apical bud ("hat"), sun-dry, slice, stir-fry with Ginger Juice, and use in prescriptions. She Gan (Belamcandae Rhizoma) is the guiding herb. It is incompatible with Zao Jia (Gleditsiae Spina), and fears Xiong Huang (Realgar), Sheng Jiang, Gan Jiang, Qin Pi (Fraxini Cortex), Gui Jia (Testudinis et Carapacis Sclerota). It is contrary to Wutou. Avoid Sheep Blood and Sea... [Text cuts off].
To make Ban Xia Qu (Pinellia Fermented Powder): Wash Pinellia clean, soak in hot water to remove skin and dirt, grind finely. Mix with Ginger Juice and Alum Water to form cakes.
