Han Yanzhi stated in *Ju Lu* (Record of Oranges): It is difficult to obtain Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange) nowadays; people often plant Citrus trifoliata (Trifoliate Orange) along fences, harvest their fruits, cut them open, dry them, and use them in combination with other herbs. The taste is similar to that of Citrus trifoliata from Shangzhou, which is also hard to obtain. Taking smaller Zhu Luan (Citrus wilsonii) fruits, breaking them in half, and sun-drying them as Zhi Shi cannot be distinguished by doctors from different regions. Using it to treat diseases can also achieve cure. Medicinal materials are precious.
Note: Citrus trifoliata is commonly known as He La Ju. Those who know this understand it. The fruit resembles Zhi Shi but has a thin shell and lacks fragrance. What is currently purchased and received by herbal shops is all this kind of plant.

Thoroughly stir-fried for treating the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner); used with the peel for treating the Lower Jiao (Lower Burner); peeled, washed to remove yellow fluid, for treating Xue Luan (blood masses); the kernel for heat in the chest and heart; the peel for heat in the muscle and surface; home-grown ones are not used in medicine.

Sweet, slightly cold. Soak in decoction, remove skin and tips, boil in water, take the kernels, grind into paste, and add to medicine.
Sour, slightly warm. Moisten with wine, remove the core, as the core can cause seminal emission. Polygonum multiflorum seed is used as an assistant herb; adversely interacts with Platycodon Root (Jiegeng), Saposhnikovia Root (Fangfeng), and Paezia Radix (Fangji).
Sour, astringent, warm and neutral. Harvest should be in the ninth and tenth lunar months. Take semi-yellow fruits, dry them, remove cores and white hairs, finely grind into powder for use, or prepare as paste. Rosa laevigata (Cherokee Rose) grows in dense clusters, resembling roses, with thorns. Flowers bloom white in April, clear and fragrant, very lovely. Bears fruit in summer and autumn, also with thorns. Yellow-red fruits are rare. Having talent but ineffective and not only...
Bitter, neutral. Remove the stem and pith, use as needed. Those suitable for holding in the mouth are best; those split open are unsuitable.
Lian Qiao (Forsythia Fruit) has two types: Da Qiao (Large Forsythia) has stiff branches and stems, growing over ten feet high; Xiao Qiao (Small Forsythia) has soft branches like roses, supporting flowers, leaves, and fruits together.
Sweet, neutral, slightly cold. When using, select clean branches and stems, choose bright ones, wash and dry, moisten with wine overnight, crush, and add to medicine.
