今有水银烧成丹砂,医人不晓,往往误用,不可不谨。
Sweet, warm. Its lumps vary in size, resembling Talcum (Huashi) and Red Kaolin (Songchishizhi), and is also sticky to the tongue; those with a white color are considered superior. For medicinal use, it should be calcined over charcoal fire, quenched seven times with urine from an uncircumcised boy, washed clean with water, ground into powder, processed by levigation (Shuifei), and dried for use.
*Wuli Xiaoshi* records: "Wolfram lead" (Weilian) is not mineral lead, but is produced by firing calamine (Luganshi) in clay pots. When smelted together with copper in fire, it turns into smoke and flies away.
Sweet, neutral. Mix powdered seeds of *Platycladus orientalis* (Cebai Zi) with water, place them in a porcelain pot, and boil them together with Amber (Hupo). Then pound into powder and sieve for use.
According to Xie Zaizhen: "Ancients said that pine resin falling to the ground becomes amber after a thousand years. Others claimed it was the essence of maple tree sap transformed over many years. These claims may not necessarily be true. However, regarding certain treasures generated... In cold regions where there is no ice but water... just as realgar (Xionghuang) transforms into gold after a thousand years, or magnetite (Cishi) gestates for two hundred years... Scholars can simply laugh it off; there is no need to argue deeply about it. Amber can be obtained; it also comes from Satsuma Province, which people today mistakenly call 'Frankincense' (Xunlu)."
Sweet, neutral, slightly toxic. For medicinal use, cloud mother (Yunmu) that is thin, white, and transparent in layers is considered superior. Take one jin of Yunmu and one dou of salt, soak them in a copper vessel, steam for one day, pound in a mortar, place in a high location, and let the wind naturally turn it into powder.
Sweet, warm. Purple in color and crystal clear in texture; regardless of its size or length, it possesses five edges, with both ends resembling arrowheads. It is superior to the white variety. [It should be] calcined seven times, ground into powder, and processed by levigation... [mixed with?] Ginger (Jiang). Taking Zhi Yingshi (Purple Quartz)... The Five-Colored Quartz stones are all minerals that resemble jade and possess luster; they are found in many mountains. Common people name the white ones resembling rock crystal as "Crystal Stone" (Shuijingshi).
Sweet, slightly cold. Those shaped like arrowheads and transparent are best. Grind into an extremely fine powder and process by levigation. Avoid fire; it is incompatible with Magnetite (Cishi) and saline water. Cinnabar (Chensha) sold in markets is often mixed with Vermilion (Yinzhu) to enhance its color. For medicinal use, it must first be washed with water to remove the Yinzhu, then finely ground and processed by levigation. Kou Zongshi stated: "There is now Cinnabar made by burning Mercury (Shuiyin); physicians who do not understand this often mistake it for genuine Cinnabar. One must be cautious."
