(It is Borneol, resembling white pine resin in shape, with the odor of fir wood. Those that are clear and pure are good; those that resemble bird droppings after long exposure to wind and sun are inferior. Nowadays, people often pass off camphor as this by crushing and mixing it in, so one must not fail to distinguish them. It is said that storing it with carbonized glutinous rice (or japonica rice) or seeds of Abrus precatorius prevents its volatilization. Its ointment treats deafness.)

(Coat until shells are removed; if the odor resembles realgar, it is genuine.)

(When processing, do not use Fructus Aurantii Immaturus because their properties and effects differ. If using Fructus Aurantii, select those with bitter and pungent odors containing oil, which can resolve all... [text missing]. Choose aged and old ones for best quality. First remove the pith, then stir-fry with bran until the bran turns black and scorched. Remove from heat, wipe off the blackened surface with a cloth, then crush individually into powder. Those produced in Jiangyou region are superior.)

(Dark-colored and aged ones are preferred. Remove pith and stir-fry with bran until yellow.)

(Select those that are purple, oily, and dense in texture. Remove coarse skin and roast with animal fat (su). For every jin of material processed, use 4 liang of animal fat. After roasting, cut finely. If taken with decoction, the effect will be natural; alternatively, process with 8 liang of fresh ginger juice per sheng. Dried Ginger serves as its "shi" (guide/assistant herb). It is incompatible with Alisma Rhizoma, Natrii Sulfas, and Arsenolite. Avoid beans.)

(Do not use su from sparrows. The genuine product resembles Fructus Corni but has an eight-angled pit, which is not used medicinally. Round, reddish, plump flesh is best. Mix with wine and steam in a clay pot, remove pits. From one jin of material, take the flesh, weighing only four liang. When steaming medicinal materials, always use a willow-wood steamer basket, keeping water 8-9 cun below the bottom so it does not touch the herbs; apply this rule generally. Polygonum multiflorum seed serves as its "shi". It is incompatible with Platycodon Root, Saposhnikovia Root, and Stephania Root.)

(Resembles Yellow Alum but is solid; some contain rotten wood. "Mu Lei" (Wood Tear) is exuded resin, appearing like paste; "You Shi Lei" (Oil Stone Tear) is lipid penetrating soil and stone, appearing in lumps. Because they absorb halide/mineral salts qi, they are superior for medicinal use. They can fix/subdue Realgar.)

(Scrape off one layer of coarse skin with a copper knife, slice thinly, soak in flowing water from the east for one night. Drain, slice finely, steam for one day, then dry. Another method uses Polyporus Umbellatus to promote dampness resolution; raw use is better.)

(Those forming a string of pearls are best; wash and slice.)

(Raw use: blanch in boiling water before consumption to avoid damaging the spleen.)

(Burn for fumigation or consume as powder.)

(This refers to bamboo shoots that die immediately upon attempting to grow; color is black like lacquer. Harvest in May and June.)

(Soak in wine for consumption, or add to decoctions.)

(Use raw or roasted, both ground into powder for medicinal use.)
