San Yin Kushen San (Three Causes Sophora Decoction): Treats severe internal damp-heat causing red and scanty urine, intermittent constipation, while food and drink intake remains unaffected. If other medications fail to resolve the condition, particularly in cases of prolonged jaundice, this formula is indicated.
Ingredients: Kushen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Gudi (Momordicae Fructus), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (each 1 fen), Tingli (Descurainiae Semen seu Lepidii Semen) (0.5 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Take one da qian (approx. 3-5 g) per dose, mixed with water. The administration should be adjusted flexibly according to the patient's reaction, which typically involves vomiting or purging.
Note: This formula is derived from the treatment principles of Taiyang (Sun-Yang) and Yangming (Yang-Ming) patterns as described in the Shanghan Lun.
Danggui Baizhu Tang (Angelica Sinensis and Atractylodes Macrocephala Decoction): Treats jaundice caused by alcohol consumption (Jiu Dan), characterized by yellowing of the skin, phlegm-fluid retention accumulating in the chest and epigastrium causing hardness and fullness, heaviness in bones and muscles, impaired appetite due to nausea, and dark yellow urine. This condition arises from internal deficiency combined with cold and raw dietary habits leading to spleen-stomach phlegm condensation; the pulse is wiry and choppy.
Ingredients: Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Yichen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba) (each 1 liang); Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, stir-fried), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried), Xingren (Pruni Armeniaci Semen, stir-fried) (each 2 liang); Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) (1.5 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Coarsely crush the herbs. Take 4-5 qian per dose, decoct with fresh ginger, and administer orally.
Xiao Jianzhong Tang (Minor Construct the Middle Decoction): [Formula name listed only].
Yangrong Tang (Nourish the Nutritive Qi Decoction): When treating the five types of jaundice accompanied by weakness in the legs, palpitations, insipid taste, tinnitus, slight aversion to cold and fever, shortness of breath, and turbid white urine, it should be treated as Xu Lao (Deficiency Consumption).
Note: The specific formulations for Xiao Jianzhong Tang and Yangrong Tang are detailed in the "Xu Sun" (Deficiency Damage) section.
San Hong Wan (Three Causes Red Pill): Treats jaundice caused by grain accumulation (Gu Dan).
Administration: Refer to the "Huo Luan" (Cholera-like Disorder) section for the formula details; take with Shengjiang Gancao Tang (Fresh Ginger and Licorice Decoction).
Baojian Zaofan Wan (Treasure Mirror Alum Pill): Treats yellowing of the eyes and body caused by dietary excess and labor fatigue.
Ingredient: Zaofan (Vitriolum Ferri, quantity unspecified). Process by heating in a clay pot over charcoal until red-hot, then quenching with rice vinegar.
Preparation and Administration: Grind the processed alum into a fine powder. Form pills using jujube paste, sized like tung tree seeds. Take 20-30 pills per dose after meals, washed down with fresh ginger soup.
Method to Extract Yellow Fluid: Use Gudi San (Melon Spout Powder).
Ingredients: Gudi (Momordicae Fructus, 2 qian), Mu Dingxiang (Sichuan Pepper Fruit, 1 qian), Shumi (Setaria Italica, 49 grains), Chixiaodou (Vigna Angularis, 0.5 qian).
Preparation and Administration: Grind all ingredients into an extremely fine powder. Each night, insufflate the powder into the nasal cavity to induce the discharge of yellow fluid. Subsequently, administer oral cooling agents internally.
San Yin Rushen San (Three Causes Like-God Powder): Treats jaundice resulting from un-dispersed alcohol toxicity, where stagnation infiltrates the clear qi pathways over time. Insufflate this powder into the nose to extract yellow fluid.
Ingredients: Ku Hu Zi (Calabash Seed, peeled), Ku Hulu Zi (Wild Calabash Seed, peeled, 21 seeds), Huang Shumi (Yellow Setaria Italica, 300 grains), Anshixiang (Styrax, size of two soap pods).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into a fine powder. Insufflate a "yi zi" amount (approx. 0.5-1 g) into the nose to drip out one sheng (approx. 200 ml) of yellow fluid. Contraindication: Do not blow the powder into the nose. If accidentally blown in or if the dosage is excessive, immediately insufflate ash made from millet husks (Shu Rang) mixed with a small amount of Muxiang (Musk) into the nose to stop the flow instantly.
