Yan's Wumei Wan (Mume Pill) is used to treat dysentery with pure blood, and pain in the umbilical and abdominal regions caused by heat lingering in the intestines and stomach.
Ingredients: Sarcocarpa Mume Flesh (Wumei Rou, 2 liang), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, each 1 liang), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 2 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder, use vinegar paste to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 70 pills per dose before meals, washed down with rice water.
Yuanrong's Wumei San (Mume Powder) is used to treat dysentery resulting in fluid deficiency, excessive thirst, and unceasing desire to drink.
Ingredients: Sarcocarpa Mume (Wumei, roasted dry, half liang), Poria (Fuling, 1 liang), Chaenomelis Fructus (Mu Gua, 1 liang). Another method adds Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guizhi, 3 qian half).
Preparation and Administration: Cut the ingredients coarsely. Take 5 qian per dose, add 3 slices of Zingiberis Recens Rhizoma (Shengjiang), decoct in water.
Note: Zhang Zhongjing's Wumei Wan treats vomiting of roundworms due to Cold Damage (Shanghan). Later generations used it to treat dysentery. This all relies on the principle of sour astringency, derived from the Guiling category of formulas for Taiyang disease.
Ju Fang Weifeng Tang (Stomach Wind Decoction from the Bureau Formulary) is used when wind-cold invades the intestines and stomach due to deficiency, causing undigested food and water to pass through, diarrhea, and intestinal damp-heat toxins manifesting as discharge resembling bean curd juice or dark blood, day and night without limit.
Ingredients: Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Baifuling (Poria Cum Ligno Quercus, equal parts), Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, equal parts).
Preparation and Administration: Make into a coarse powder. Take 2 qian per dose, add a few grains of Setaria Italica (Sumi), decoct together, take before meals.
Note: Although this formula is named for treating wind, it does not actually dispel wind; rather, it is a medicine that tonifies blood, harmonizes blood, and benefits stomach qi. For bloody dysentery complicated by deficiency, it is indeed reliable. Its theoretical basis comes from the Guiling category of formulas for Taiyang disease.
Liang Fang Jiawei Siwu Tang (Modified Four Substances Decoction from Good Prescriptions) is used to treat bloody dysentery.
Ingredients: Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) plus Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin) and Aiyè (Artemisiae Argyi Folium).
Baoming Ji Formula: In Siwu Tang, add equal parts of Huaihua (Sophorae Flos), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), and Yumike (Papaveris Pericarpium).
Note: These are medicines that tonify blood and warm blood, derived from the Jueyin category of formulas.
Xuanming Baizhu Tang (Baizhu Decoction from Xuanming) is used to treat pregnant women suffering from dysentery with pus and blood.
Ingredients: Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, equal parts).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into powder. Take 2-3 qian per dose, decoct in water, take before meals.
Liang Fang Shiquan Dabu Tang (Complete Great Tonifying Decoction from Good Prescriptions) is used for all women's diseases involving dysentery lasting forty days, where other medicines have failed, and the six pulses are deep and weak. Generally, the pulse in dysentery should be deep and weak, but recovery occurs after taking this medicine. (See Tonifying Formulas section for the formula).
Preparation and Administration: Decoct with Shengjiang (Zingiberis Recens Rhizoma) and Dazao (Jujubae Fructus), add half spoon of Apis Mellifica (Baimi), boil a few more times, then take.
Liang Fang treats dysentery with abdominal pain and difficult urination during pregnancy.
Ingredients: Nuomi (Oryza Sativa Glutinosa Semen, one he), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, stir-fried), Huangqi (Astragali Radix, equal parts).
Preparation and Administration: Cut finely, mix evenly, decoct in water, and take.
Note: These two formulas do not distinguish by meridians; they are blood-tonifying agents. It is rare nowadays to use these for treating dysentery. However, one must not ignore that for patients with depletion of qi and blood, or conditions before and after childbirth, this method is indispensable. Therefore, specific entries are established to highlight their value.
