[Jiyao Baizhu Shaoyao Tang] Treats diarrhea caused by dampness invading the Taiyin Spleen Meridian, characterized by watery stools flowing down heavily, body heaviness, slight fullness, fatigue and weakness, loss of appetite, sudden onset of frequent diarrhea with undigested food. This decoction is suitable for harmonizing. Body heaviness and sudden violent diarrhea indicate a major pathological trend, which also requires harmonization.
Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (each 1 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (5 qian).
The above herbs are cut into pieces; each dose of 1 liang is boiled in water.
[Zhi Shi Xie Fuling Tang] Also treats food stagnation diarrhea and damp-heat syndromes.
Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria) (each 7.5 qian).
The above herbs are crushed; each dose of 1 liang is boiled in water and taken before meals. Another version includes Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) with three ingredients in equal proportions, named Baizhu San.
Commentary: The above three formulas are harmonizing and damp-draining agents involving the Foot-Taiyin Splein Meridian and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) is sweet and enters the stomach to remove dampness from the spleen and stomach; Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) is sour and astringent, clearing damp-heat in the stomach; Fuling (Poria) promotes water metabolism to drain dampness. These three herbs are essential for treating dysentery and diarrhea.
[Cangzhu Shaoyao Tang] Symptoms as described above.
Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) (2 liang), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (1 liang), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (0.5 liang).
The above herbs are cut into pieces; each dose of 1 liang is boiled in water with Danwei Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi) (0.5 qian), and the clear liquid is taken.
Commentary: This is a formula to dissipate damp-heat in the Upper and Middle Jiao, belonging to the Taiyin Meridian drugs.
[Liangfang Weiling Tang] Treats diarrhea where water and grain are indistinguishable due to cold water damaging the spleen and stomach during summer and autumn, resulting in incessant diarrhea.
Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria), Pingwei San (Powder to Maintain Uprightness).
Combine the two formulas, boil with Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Dazao (Jujubae Fructus), and take on an empty stomach.
Commentary: This is a formula that drains dampness from both the exterior and interior, corresponding to Li Dongyuan’s concept of "draining dampness from above and below." It involves the Taiyang and Taiyin meridians and originates from the Yangming Yin-Pi example in Zhang Zhongjing's works.
[Zhang Zhongjing Wuling San]
[Xuanming Yiyuan San] (Formula details see Dampness Agents section)
Commentary: The above two formulas are damp-draining and diuretic agents, belonging to the Taiyang Meridian drugs.
[Jiyao Fangfeng Shaoyao Tang] Treats dysentery, Sun-Xie (diarrhea with undigested food), accompanied by fever, wiry pulse, abdominal pain, headache, and slight sweating.
Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (each 1 liang).
The above herbs are crushed; each dose of 0.5 liang is boiled in water, and the clear liquid is taken.
Commentary: This is a pungent-cool formula for treating wind, involving the Taiyin and Taiyang meridians.
[Cangzhu Fangfeng Tang] Treats dysentery, wiry pulse, and slight headache.
Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) (2 liang), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (1 liang).
Another version: Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) (4 liang), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) (1 liang), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (0.5 qian), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) (7 slices), boiled in water.
Commentary: These are drugs of the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian.
[Liangfang Shenzhu San] Treats wind injury in spring leading to Sun-Xie (diarrhea with undigested food) in summer.
Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) (1 jin), Ben Cao (Ligustici Rhizoma et Radix), Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (each 6 liang), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) (4 liang), Fencao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) (1.6 qian).
The above are made into coarse powder; each dose of 3 qian is boiled with Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) (3 slices). To induce sweating, add Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus).
Commentary: The above three formulas are pungent-warm agents for treating wind overcoming dampness, belonging to the Taiyang Meridian drugs.
[Jufang Weiqi Tang] Treats adults and children whose intestines and stomach are invaded by wind-cold due to deficiency, causing indigestion of water and grain and profuse watery diarrhea. (Formula details see Dysentery Section)
Commentary: Although named for treating wind, this formula actually possesses blood-harmonizing properties.
