San Yin Xiong Zhu Tang (Three Causes Ligusticum and Atractylodes Decoction): Treats severe headache, dizziness, and heavy sensation in the head caused by dampness invading the head.
Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (Fuzi, prepared lateral root of Aconitum) [Note: Original specifies raw, peeled, and de-eyed], Cinnamomi Cortex (Guixin), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) [Each 1 fen].
The above herbs are cut into small pieces. For each dose, take 4 qian, add 7 slices of fresh ginger and one jujube, decoct together, and take before meals.
Commentary: This formula belongs to the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. It treats cold-dampness patterns; it is not indicated for patients with internal heat.
Mi Zang Ban Xia Bai Zhu Tian Ma Tang (Secret Repository Pinellia, Atractylodes, and Gastrodia Decoction): Treats patients who have a chronic spleen-stomach condition, frequently experiencing irritability and constipation. Furthermore, exposure to cold air during entry and exit causes qi stagnation and disorder, leading to the depression of fire yang which fails to ascend. Physicians mistakenly suspected heat and administered Shu Feng Wan (Wind-Dispersing Pills) followed by purgatives. Consequently, the original symptoms remained unchanged, while new symptoms emerged: vomiting and regurgitation, inability to retain food, thick and sticky phlegm spurting continuously, dry eyes, vertigo, nausea, chest oppression, shortness of breath, asthmatic breathing with weakness, inability to open the eyes, a sensation of being amidst wind and clouds, severe splitting headache, heaviness of the body as if weighed down by mountains, and cold limbs. This indicates damage to stomach qi, exacerbated by two previous purgations, leading to further deficiency of the spleen and stomach. This disease is named "Phlegm-Jue Headache".
Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum (Banxia, prepared rhizome of Pinellia), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), Fermented Medicinal Leaven (Chao Qu) [Each 1 qian], Gastrodiae Rhizoma (Tianma), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Ginseng Radix (Renshen), Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), Alismatis Rhizoma (Zexie), Poria (Fuling) [Each 0.5 qian], Hordeum Vulgare Fructus (Damai Mian, barley flour), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Ganjiang, fresh ginger rhizome) [3 fen], Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai) [2 fen].
Severe headache of this nature belongs to Phlegm-Jue Headache of the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian; only Pinellia can treat it. Blackout and vertigo spinning like a whirlwind are caused by internal deficiency; only Gastrodia can eliminate it. (See detailed discussion in *Shi Xiao Fang*).
Jia Zhen Shui Zhu Jin Hua Wan (Jia Zhen Boiled Water Golden Flower Pill): Treats headaches. Upon each attack, the cheeks appear bluish-yellow, accompanied by dizziness, reluctance to open the eyes, lethargy in speech, bodily heaviness, a sense of impending vomiting, which resolves only after several days. This is a combined disease of the Jueyin and Taiyin meridians, named "Wind-Phlegm". After taking this pill, moxa should be applied to the Xiaguan (GB43) acupoints (two points); recovery will occur within ten days.
Ju Fang Yu Hu Wan (Bureau Formula Jade Pot Pill): Added with Realgar (Xionghuang) and Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu) to treat wind-dampness.
Commentary: This formula originates from the Taiyin meridian vomiting and hiccups category; it is a medicine for treating wind-phlegm.
Yan Shi San Sheng Wan (Dr. Yan's Three Lives Pill): Treats Phlegm-Jue Headache.
Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia), Bryoniae Radix (Baifuzi, note: often refers to Typhonii Rhizoma or similar in historical contexts, here likely Typhonii Rhizoma given context of wind-phlegm, but strictly translated as Baifuzi), Arisaematis Rhizoma (Nanxing) [Each 1 fen].
Grind the above herbs into fine powder. Soak in fresh ginger juice, mix with steamed dough pills to form pills the size of mung beans. Take 40 pills per dose after meals, washed down with ginger soup.
Commentary: This medicine originates from the Jueyin meridian categories of Nanxing and Banxia; it is also a medicine for treating wind-phlegm.
Bao Jian Fu Ling Ban Xia Tang (Treasure Mirror Poria and Pinellia Decoction): Treats vomiting and headache caused by wind-heat and rebellious phlegm.
Large Pinelliae Rhizoma (Da Banxia, 3 pieces), Red Poria (Chi Fuling) [1 fen], Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi) [Each 2 fen].
Cut the herbs, add 3 slices of fresh ginger, and decoct.
Commentary: This formula belongs to the Hand and Foot Taiyin meridians; it is a medicine for treating phlegm complicated with heat. Its counterparts for treating phlegm complicated with cold are similar to formulas for treating wind-cold; those that are similar are collected here.
