Xiaoxuting Decoction (also known as Kuanjin Tang, Broaden Tendon Decoction): Treats wind generated from deficiency after vomiting and diarrhea in children, manifesting as convulsions, coma, excessive phlegm-saliva, and difficulty breathing.
Ingredients: Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) (remove nodes, half liang), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 防风) (one point five fen), Paeoniae Radix (Shaoyao, 芍药), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (Fuzi, 附子), Ginseng Radix (Renshen, 人参), Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong, 川芎), Atractodis Rhizoma (Baizhu, 白术), Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix (Fangji, 防己) (each one liang), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩) (one fen), Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guizhi, 桂枝), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) (each half liang).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above herbs into coarse powder. For every three years of age, administer one qian. Decoct with water, adding fresh ginger and jujube. If the child has sweating, remove Ephedrae Herba.
Qianshi Daqing Gao (Dr. Qian's Big Blue Paste): Treats wind generated by excessive heat in children, impending convulsions. This occurs because the child's blood and qi are not yet solidified and cannot withstand pathogenic factors, thus triggering convulsions. Symptoms include normal urination and defecation, and hot breath from the mouth; this formula should be used to induce sweating and release the exterior.
Ingredients: Gastrodiae Rhizoma Powder (Tianma, 天麻末) (one qian), Fuzi (Bai Fu Zi, 白附子) (one point five qian), Scorpio (Xie Shao, 蝎梢) (half qian), Cinnabar (Zhusha, 朱砂) (one zi), Moschus (Shexiang, 麝) (one zi), Natrix Nigrocincta Meat (Wushe Rou, 乌蛇肉) (soaked in wine, baked dry, half qian), Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis, 青黛) (one qian), Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Tian Zhu Huang, 天竺黄) (one zi).
Preparation and Administration: Grind all ingredients together into fine powder. Mix with raw honey to form a paste. Administer half the size of a soap bean per dose; for infants of younger months, administer the size of a rice grain.
Tianma Fangfeng Wan (Gastrodia and Saposhnikovia Pill): See later section.
Commentary: The above three formulas are suitable for wind caused by internal factors, and sweating therapy is appropriate. This demonstrates that interior syndromes with exterior manifestations differ from external causes. Furthermore, considering categories such as convulsive wind, phlegm-heat, and food stagnation transforming into heat, clinicians should select formulas according to clinical presentation.
Qufeng Gao (Wind-Expelling Paste): Composed of Xieqing Wan (Eliminate Green Pill) added with Chen Sha (Cinnabar) and Xie Wei (Scorpio tail).
Commentary: This is a formula that treats both exterior and interior conditions.
Body Bathing Method:
Ingredients: Gastrodiae Rhizoma Powder (two qian), Scorpio Tail, Cinnabar (each half qian), Natrix Nigrocincta Meat (soaked in wine, ground to powder), Alum (Bai Fan, 白矾) (each three qian), Moschus (one zi), Indigo Naturalis (three qian).
Usage: Grind all ingredients uniformly. Take three qian, decoct with water, add a handful of peach branches and five to seven leaves, and wash the body with the warm liquid. Do not bathe the back.
Fontanelle Application Method:
Ingredients: Moschus (one zi), Scorpio Tail (half qian), Menthae Haplocalycis Folium (Bohe Ye, 薄荷叶) (half qian), Geckus Powder, Bovis Calculus Powder (Niuhuang, 牛黄末), Indigo Naturalis Powder (each one zi).
Usage: Grind uniformly and mix with cooked date flesh to form a paste. Apply evenly on new cotton wool and paste onto the fontanelle, leaving about one finger's width exposed at the four sides. Warm your hand over fire and frequently press/warm the area. This method can be used for infants within one hundred days, both internally and externally.
Careful Note: In common practice, for children around one year old suffering from various wind-related convulsions, using bathing and pinching-washing methods to induce sweating yields immediate results and is superior to moxibustion. Moxibustion may be erroneous if applied to wind-heat yang epilepsy cases. Exercise caution.
Jufang Baidu San (Official Formulation Detoxifying Powder): Treats childhood wind-cold invasion with fever and nasal congestion.
(Formula see Hot Pathogen Section)
Bacui Fangfeng Cangzhu Tang (Excellence Formula Wind-Expelling and Atractylodes Decoction): Treats childhood pathogenic heat in the exterior, aversion to wind, and injury from wind-cold.
Ingredients: Saposhnikoviae Radix (half liang), Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu, 苍术), Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao, 石膏) (each one liang), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata (Zhi Gancao, 炙甘草) (half liang), Chuanxiong Rhizoma, Scutellariae Radix (each two points five qian).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into coarse powder. Take two qian per dose, decoct with fresh ginger and Menthae Haplocalycis Folium.
Shengma Huangqin Tang ( Cimicifugae and Scutellaria Decoction): Treats childhood wind-stroke with fever, stiffness of head and neck, spontaneous sweating, and disharmony of the exterior.
Ingredients: Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma, 升麻), Puerariae Lobatae Radix (Gegen, 葛根), Scutellariae Radix, Paeoniae Radix (each five points five qian), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (two points five qian).
Preparation and Administration: Cut into pieces. Take two qian per dose, decoct with water.
Commentary: These two formulas belong to the Yangming Channel medications.
Da Qianghuo Tang (Great Notopterygium Decoction): Treats wind-heat.
(Formula see Cold Pathogen Section)
Qianshi Taqi Wan (Dr. Qian's Qi-Sinking Pill): Treats Spleen wind with abdominal distension.
Ingredients: Piperis Fructus (Hujiao, 胡椒) (one liang), Scorpio Tail (half liang).
Preparation and Administration: Make pills with paste, sized like millet seeds. Administer five to seven pills, or up to ten to twenty pills per dose.
Commentary: This is a medication to diffuse wind and tonify the spleen.
Qianghuo Gao (Notopterygium Paste): See later Convulsion Formulas section.
Quanying Fang Modified Jingsheng San (Complete Infant Formula Modified Awaken Spirit Powder): Treats childhood wind-cold invasion, wind-heat, and cold-pathogen invasion causing nasal congestion, fever, palpitations, headache, cough, and epidemic wind-heat.
Ingredients: Atractylodis Rhizoma, Chuanxiong Rhizoma, Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin, 细辛), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo, 羌活), Saposhnikoviae Radix, Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi, 白芷), Trichosanthis Radix (Tianguafen, 天花粉), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Paeoniae Radix Rubra (Chishao, 赤芍), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng, 桔梗), Ephedrae Herba, Schizonepetae Spica (Jingjie, 荆芥), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 当归), Menthae Haplocalycis Folium.
Preparation and Administration: Equal parts of the above herbs. Decoct with water, take one qian per dose, add fresh ginger.
Commentary: This follows the Taiyang Channel pattern.
The above formulas should be selected according to the severity of involvement in the respective channels.
Jiangcan San (Bombyx Batryticatus Powder): Treats childhood wind-stroke with inability to speak, loss of voice, obstruction of Guan-Ge (gate and diaphragm), and mental confusion.
Ingredients: Bombyx Batryticatus (Jiangcan, 僵蚕) (half liang), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (one liang), Moschus (half qian).
Usage: Grind into powder. For a two-year-old child, take half qian, mix with a little fresh ginger juice, and swallow with decoction. Additionally, frequently apply Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma powder to the root of the tongue.
Guichang San (Cinnamon Twig and Acorus Powder): Treats acute childhood wind-stroke with loss of voice and inability to speak.
Ingredients: Cinnamomi Cortex (Guixin, 桂心) (one liang), Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma (Shichangpu, 石菖蒲) (one fen).
Usage: Grind into powder. For a three-year-old child, take one qian, decoct with water. For those unable to speak after severe illness, mix with pig bile for administration. If speech does not return, take again.
Commentary: These two formulas originate from the Taiyang Channel pattern, demonstrating that wind-stroke and wind-cold invasion have different patterns; hence, they are recorded here.
