Li Dongyuan's Buzhong Gaiqi Tang (Supplemental Middle Covering Qi Decoction) treats the damage to primordial qi caused by emotions such as anger, joy, worry, and fear, as well as body fatigue and lassitude resulting from overwork.
The formula is found in the "Re Men" (Hot Section) chapter.
Tiaozhong Yiqi Tang (Regulate Middle Boost Qi Decoction).
The formula is found in the "Neishang Men" (Internal Injury Section) chapter.
Note: These two formulas are suitable for conditions where labor consumes qi and should be supplemented; their therapeutic principle derives from the examples of Shaoyang disease (Lesser Yang disorder).
Qingshu Yiqi Tang (Clear Summerheat Boost Qi Decoction) treats primordial qi damaged by summerheat, manifesting as poor appetite and physical fatigue.
The formula is found in the "Shu Men" (Summerheat Section) chapter.
Note: This corresponds to the principle that "heat causes qi leakage," thus supplementation is required.
Jufang Yangqi Dan (Bureau Formula Nourishing Qi Pill).
Yangzheng Dan (Nourish Righteousness Pill).
Note: The above formulas treat deficiency of primordial yang, shortness of breath, emaciation, dysfunction of qi ascending and descending, poor appetite, weak pulse, and sinking of yin and yang qi. They act very swiftly, but should not be taken continuously or in large doses. The discussion is found in the "Buxu Men" (Deficiency Supplementation Section).
Jufang Yixiang San (Bureau Formula Fragrant Powder) treats disharmony of stomach qi, abdominal and hypochondriac distension, abnormal digestion of food, and accumulation of all types of cold qi.
Herbs: Nelumbinis Semen (Shilian Rou, 1 liang), Curcumae Zedoariae Rhizoma (Ezhu), Spatholobi Caulis (Sanleng), Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus (Yizhiren), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle (Gancao, Zhi, each 6 liang), Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Qingpi), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Nongpu, Zhi, each 2 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above herbs into powder. Take 2-3 qian per dose, decocted with fresh ginger and jujube.
Note: The original text states this formula treats kidney qi disharmony; however, the character "kidney" (Shen) is a typo for "stomach" (Wei). This formula derives from the examples of Yangming disease (Greater Yang disorder).
Yuyuanfang Zhuqi Wan (Imperial Court Formula Boosting Qi Pill).
The formula is found in the "Jiju Men" (Accumulation and Mass Section) chapter.
Fenqi Wan (Divide Qi Pill) is suitable for treating chest and diaphragm qi obstruction and solidified phlegm that fails to transform.
Herbs: Amomi Fructus Rotundus (Sharen), Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Qingpi), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), Cardamomi Albi Fructus (Baidoukou), Curcumae Zedoariae Rhizoma (Pao), Curcumae Longae Rhizoma (Wei), Litseae Fructus (Chengqie), Raphani Semen (Luobozhi, Chao), Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhishi), Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang, each 1 liang), Stemonae Radix (Hei Qianniu, Chao 2 liang, take the first extraction powder).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above herbs into powder, mix with paste to make pills the size of wutong seeds. Take 50 pills per dose with ginger water.
Note: The aforementioned formulas are agents for treating qi accumulation and epigastric fullness, not for regulation. They should be used after distinguishing between excess and deficiency, cold and heat. The herbs in these formulas are all blood-invigorating agents within the category of qi-regulating drugs.
Erchen Tang (Two Aged Decoction).
Jiegeng Banxia Tang (Platycodon and Pinellia Decoction).
Siqi Tang (Four Seven Decoction).
All are found in the "Tanyin Men" (Phlegm-Fluids Section) chapter.
Suzi Jiangqi Tang (Perilla Seed Descending Qi Decoction).
The formula is found in the "Ke Men" (Cough Section) chapter.
Note: These formulas are agents for dispersing stagnation and harmonizing the middle jiao.
Ben Shi Fang Huaijiao San (Essential Prescriptions Sophora Seed Powder).
Jisheng Guipi Tang (Generation-Saving Spleen-Restoring Decoction).
Bacui Mendong Yinzi (Extracts Winter-Throat Drink).
All are found in the "Xuezheng Men" (Blood Disorder Section) chapter.
Note: Pathologies involving qi affecting blood have been discussed previously; therefore, the above formulas are recorded for reference. Users should apply them according to appropriate principles and patterns.
