Li The disease of fetal fright (Tai Jing) arises after conception, when the mother suffers a great shock. The qi responds to the fetus, and the frightful qi enters the Liver. Consequently, infants of several months old suffer from fetal fright, which is often incurable. A prescription is tentatively proposed for consideration.
Antelope Horn (Lingyang Jiao), Borneo Gourd Powder (Tianzhuhuang), Aged Phlegm-resolving Pill made from Pinellia (Chen Danning), Acorus Rhizome (Shichangpu), Rhubarb (Dahuang).
Grind all into powder. Administer 5 fen with bamboo sap (Zhuyu) or Uncaria Decoction (Gougou Tang).
Xu Hoarseness, wheezing, and coughing with rattling phlegm. Wind-phlegm attacking the Lung, causing Lung distension, complicated by a critical condition of fright and danger.
Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang), Apricot Seed (Xingren), Belamcanda Rhizome (Shegan), Platycodon Root (Jiegeng), Mulberry Root Bark (Sangbaipi), Acorus Rhizome (Changpu), Bitter Orange (Zhiqiao), Peucedani Radix (Qianhu), Cynanchum Root (Baiqian), Aster Root (Ziwan), White Radish Juice (taken as an additive).
Zhu After the eruption of scarlet fever (Sha), complicated by food stagnation, heat shifts to the Large Intestine. Abdominal heat and pain, worsening significantly during the Yin and Mao hours (3:00–7:00 AM). The plan is to open the depression of Metal (Lung Qi), imitating the intent discussed by Danxi regarding Shen Yue Tao.
Galangal Rhizome (Gaoliangjiang), Platycodon Root (Jiegeng), Coptis Rhizome (Chuanlian), Akebia Stem (Tongcao), Talcum (Huashi), Scorched Gardenia Fruit (Jiao Shanzhi), Charred Hawthorn Fruit (Shanzhitan), Scorched Medicated Leaven (Jiao Liuqu), Amomum Fruit (Sharen).
Again Abdominal pain after scarlet fever, severe at dawn. Yang qi is constrained and inhibited by yin-cold; it desires to ascend but cannot, hence the severe pain at dawn. The previous method of combining warming and cold-clearing was effective. Now, continue with the previous method with modifications.
Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi), Prepared Ginger (Paojiang), Evodia Fruit (Wuzhuyu), Aucklandia Root (Muxiang), Corydalis Rhizome (Yanhusu), Cyperus Rhizome (Xiangfu), Charred Hawthorn Fruit (Shanzhitan), Areca Seed (Huabinglang), Poria (Chiling), Scorched Gardenia Fruit (Jiao Shanzhi), Cardamom Seed (Baokourén).
Fang After scarlet fever, Lung fire remains unclear, and heat shifts to the collaterals of the Large Intestine. Abdominal pain, loose stools, swelling and pain on both sides of the wrists. Prevent the outbreak of scarlet toxin. Treat with clearing and resolving.
Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma), Puerariae Radix (Gegen), Red Peony Root (Chishao), Scorched Gardenia Fruit (Jiao Shanzhi), Licorice Root (Gancao), Galangal Rhizome (Gaoliangjiang), Moutan Cortex (Danpi), Platycodon Root (Jiegeng), Honeysuckle Stem (Rendongteng).
Yuann's Note: This prescription is truly inconceivable. Quack doctors would invariably use standard formulas for clearing the Lung, strengthening the Spleen, resolving stagnation, and detoxifying.
Again: The previous prescription has been effective; reduce the dosage and adjust the formulation.
Saposhnikovia Root (Fangfeng), Scorched Hawthorn Flesh (Jiao Zharon), Honeysuckle Flower (Yinhua), Amomum Fruit (Sharen), Platycodon Root (Jiegeng), Licorice Root (Gancao), Tangerine Peel (Chenpi), Red Peony Root (Chishao).
Ren Yuan said: Young children cannot clearly describe their symptoms, and pulse diagnosis is difficult to rely upon. Although only one finger is used to press the Cun Kou pulse, only general information regarding floating/sinking and slow/rapid can be obtained; thus pediatrics is called the "mute department" (Ya Ke). Of the four diagnostic methods, only two can be utilized: observing the spirit and complexion, and inquiring with the wet nurse to get a general idea. This is the most difficult aspect. However, within this difficulty, there is ease. What is easy? It is that among the Three Causes, internal causes are extremely rare; mostly, it involves external contraction of the Six Evils or internal injury from milk and food. Even if there is internal injury, it is deficiency caused by disease, not comparable to diseases caused by deficiency leading to emotional disturbances (Seven Emotions and Six Desires). If examined carefully and thoroughly, the key points are not hard to grasp. The worst trend in recent times is undoubtedly "picking fright." Regardless of whether it is external contraction or internal injury, it is generally labeled as wind-stroke/fright. Treatments involve pushing, pinching, or picking, followed by opening the orifices with drugs like Realgar, Brain (Camphor), and Musk. Even enlightened individuals fall into this habit, unknowingly killing countless infants. Fright diseases do occur occasionally. Children have fragile bodies and unfirm souls/hun-po. Suddenly seeing strange words, clothes, or objects causes fright and terror; this must have a cause. One must separate the terms "Fright" and "Wind." Fright is distinct from Wind; they must never be treated indiscriminately. Fright is illness caused by being startled; Wind is transformed from warm-heat or contracted from wind pathogens. The treatments are worlds apart. Yu Jia Yan said: Pediatrics follows the same principles as adult internal medicine. If a master of Shanghan (Cold Damage) were consulted, errors would be avoided. These are words of profound insight. All six evildoers' pathogens can transform into fire. Children suffer from heat diseases more often than cold diseases because their yin qi is not yet full, while their generating yang is vigorous, making transformation into fire particularly easy. Parents often clothe their children before they feel cold and feed them before they feel hungry. Undigested food turns into phlegm. When phlegm combines with wind-heat, spasm and convulsion easily occur. Quack doctors call this fright-wind, and families accept this label, a situation persisting for days. I hope my colleagues will show great compassion and work together to reverse this decadent trend, accumulating boundless merit.
