Gao Ruozhou suddenly suffered from abdominal distension. The physician administered warming and moving (warming the middle and promoting transportation) methods. Gradually, a tangible epigastric fullness developed, accompanied by frequent sensations of qi rushing upward and acid regurgitation. Misdiagnosed as deficiency-cold, he tried various warming and tonifying medicines. His food intake decreased daily, the fullness increased, muscles wasted away, and he remained bedridden for half a year. Mengying examined him in spring. The pulse was deep, wiry, soft, and slippery. Bowel movements were unsmooth, urination was turbid and scanty, and the tongue coating was yellow and greasy. This indicated liver qi stagnation and knotting; stagnation generates heat, while tonification condenses phlegm. He prescribed Black Gardenia Peel (Zhi Zi Pi), Sichuan Chinaberry Kernel (Chuan Lian Zi), Light Evodia Fruit (Dan Wu Zhu Yu), Ginger-fried Coptis Rhizome (Jiang Chao Huang Lian), Corydalis Tuber (Yan Hu Suo), Taizhou Lindera Root (Tai Wu Yao), Inula Flower (Xuan Fu Hua), Fried Immature Bitter Orange (Chao Zhi Shi), Honey-fried Chicken Gizzard Lining (Zhi Ji Jin), Blood Turtle Shell (Xue Bie Jia), Ginger Bamboo Shavings (Jiang Zhu Ru), Moldy Tangerine Peel (Zhu Chen Pi), White Poria (Bai Fu Ling), and Pinellia Paste (Ban Xia Qu). (A wiry-slippery pulse indicates liver-heat with phlegm; a deep-soft pulse indicates liver-stagnation and qi-knotting. Black Gardenia Peel 1.5 qian. Sichuan Chinaberry Kernel crushed and decocted first 3 qian. Light Evodia Fruit 0.6 qian. Ginger-fried Coptis Rhizome 0.8 qian. Corydalis Tuber 0.8 qian. Taizhou Lindera Root 1 qian. Inula Flower wrapped in silk and decocted 3 qian. Fried Immature Bitter Orange 1.5 qian. Honey-fried Chicken Gizzard Lining ground 4 qian. Blood Turtle Shell crushed and decocted first 8 qian. Ginger Bamboo Shavings 3 qian. Moldy Tangerine Peel 1.5 qian. White Poria 3 qian. Pinellia Paste 3 qian.) After taking the medicine, symptoms gradually subsided, but chills and fever occurred intermittently, along with soreness and pain in the four limbs. Some suspected malaria. Mengying said: This is the free flow of qi mechanism being promoted and stagnant heat escaping outward; it is the pathway for the disease to exit. How can it be blocked? He added drugs such as Gentian Root (Qin Jiao), Bupleurum Root (Chai Hu), Soybean Sprouts (Dou Juan), Antelope Horn (Ling Yang Jiao), Silkworm Excrement (Can Sha), and Mulberry Twig (Sang Zhi) to guide the pathogen. (The previous formula should remove Gardenia, Coptis, and Turtle Shell; add Left-side Gentian Root 3 qian, Spring Bupleurum Root 1.5 qian, and Soybean Sprouts 3 qian, all added at the same time. Antelope Horn ground and taken with water 0.8 qian. Evening Silkworm Excrement 3 qian. Wine-fried Mulberry Twig added later 3 qian.) Chills and fever gradually ceased, and the upward rushing of qi stopped. Palpation of the abdomen still revealed hardness. He occasionally used Longhui Pill (Long Hui Wan) and Gun Tan Pill (Gun Tan Wan) to gently guide downward. Food intake gradually increased, and recovery slowly ensued. (This hardness must be in the large abdomen. Gun Tan Pill 2 qian, Long Hui Pill 1 qian taken together once.)
Zhao Tingqiao’s wife suddenly suffered from epigastric pain last winter. Physician Huang treated her, but headaches and dizziness gradually increased, followed by rebellious qi, vomiting, excessive phlegm, insomnia, loose stools, anorexia, and amenorrhea. Initially suspected as deficiency, then suspected as pregnancy. Various medicines were tried, but the condition worsened daily. Mengying palpated the pulse: left side wiry and rapid, right side slippery and forceful. He said: This is iatrogenic illness. It will heal in over ten days. Although the patient has a robust constitution, she has had underlying yin-deficiency since childhood. Thus, water fails to nourish wood, causing liver-yang to hyperactivity and harass the stomach, leading to epigastric pain. At that time, sour-bitter herbs to drain liver and sweet-cool herbs to nourish stomach should have been used, resulting in cure within a few days. Instead, warming and tonifying were recklessly applied, adding oil to fire. Lung fluids and stomach juices were scorched away. Angry liver-qi rose straight up, blocking the pivot mechanism. Water-dampness entering the stomach condensed into phlegm. Although manifestations were diverse, they all resulted from qi failing to descend. How could one mistake the cessation of sleep and eating for consumption (lao), or regular menstruation for pregnancy? He prescribed large doses of light and clear substances to regulate the qi mechanism, allowing the governing commands of the whole body to function smoothly, so that rebellious fire of liver and gallbladder, turbidity lingering in the stomach, heat constrained by the pivot, and phlegm condensed from water-dampness could all descend, leading to natural recovery. The medicine took effect immediately, and peace returned after more than ten days. Menstruation arrived one month later. (Formula uses Living Reed Rhizome 2 liang, Raw Winter Melon Seed 4 qian, Raw Coix Seed crushed 8 qian, Fritillaria Bulb crushed 1 liang, Nanmu Pollen 4 qian, Flower Ophiopogon Tuber 3 qian, Ginger-fried Scutellaria Root 3 qian, Inula Flower wrapped in silk 3 qian, Water Chestnut with skin 2 liang, Northern Pear with skin 1 liang, Fresh Olive two pieces with core crushed, Raw Clam Shell 1 liang, Pumice Stone 5 qian. The latter three are simmered first.)
Mr. Ma, in his thirties, who usually engaged in strenuous labor, suffered from fever, aversion to cold, limb tremors, and spontaneous sweating. Qi rushed from the lower abdomen to the chest, accompanied by headache and thirst. Mengying diagnosed: Wei-deficiency with wind invasion, and long-term injury to collaterals, causing internal stirring of liver-wind. He prescribed Jianzhong Decoction without malt sugar, plus Dragon Bone (Long Gu), Oyster Shell (Mu Li), Purple Quartz (Zi Shi Ying), Cistanche Stem (Rou Cong Rong), Sichuan Chinaberry Fruit (Lian Shi), and Mulberry Twig (Sang Zhi) for several doses, resulting in cure. (Labor damages yang; this case shows wei-deficiency, supported by other pulse signs. Aversion to cold indicates wei-deficiency; limb tremors and sweating indicate yin-deficiency with internal liver-wind. Raw American Ginseng 3 qian, Large Rehmannia Root 8 qian, Wine-fried White Peony Root 1.5 qian, Flower Ophiopogon Tuber 4 qian, Dragon Bone crushed 1 liang, Oyster Shell crushed 4 liang, Purple Quartz crushed 5 qian. These three are charcoal-roasted first for eight quarter-hours. Pale Cistanche 3 qian. Three Sichuan Chinaberry kernels crushed and decocted first 4 qian. Wine-fried Mulberry Twig added later 3 qian. American Ginseng treats wei-deficiency; Winter and Earth (Ophiopogon and Rehmannia) treat fluid-deficiency and thirst. Dragon Bone, Oyster Shell, and Purple Quartz use heavy substances to calm fright, treating spontaneous sweating, rebellious qi, headache, and dizziness. Wine-fried White Peony moves upward to stop sweating; wine-fried Mulberry Twig enters the limbs to treat limb tremors as a symptomatic treatment.)
Li Yanbiao suffered from a carbuncle on the neck in summer. Surgeons declared it incurable. Zhu Songnian treated him, and he gradually stabilized. Mengying palpated the pulse and stated that Li’s condition could be cured but his lifespan would be short. The left chi pulse was firm and forceful, indicating damage to true yin, which is not a good omen. He recovered but died suddenly in spring. (Pulse classics state that life and death in chronic diseases are observed by the strength and weakness of the left chi pulse.)
Old Man Li, over seventy years old, wished to marry a woman from his wife's family. His descendants did not agree. Consequently, he gradually became delirious and confused. Many doctors widely administered hot tonics, worsening the condition with each dose. Mengying palpated the pulse: it was vigorous and forceful against the fingers. His face was red, he did not speak, saliva flowed freely, and his strength was uncontrollable. Mengying said: This is due to strong endowment and predominant yang, hence the desire for marriage. Doctors did not realize that having enjoyed longevity, heaven bestowed abundant qi. Moreover, at fifty, yin qi declines first. As Xu Lingtai said, ancient trees often burn themselves; when yin is exhausted, fire ignites. This applies to all things. Last winter, I treated Shao Keting’s isolated yang wheezing. Besides strengthening water and clearing fire, I administered Tian Sheng Gan Lu Yin (Pear Juice) totaling over two hundred jin, and the condition gradually stabilized. Merely mistakingly drinking two cups of ginger soup ruined all prior efforts. This shows that those with yang-predominant endowment find it hard to replenish yin, and fire easily spreads like a prairie fire. Now, with Aconite, Cinnamon Bark, Morinda Root, Deer Antler, Ginseng, Datura Seed, and Placenta already taken for a long time, what substance can generate dried-up water to harmonize extreme yang? Soon, he indeed passed away.
Cheng Zhixiang contracted warm-heat disease this spring, with insecure essence gate. Ten days later, sudden penile retraction and chills occurred. Feeling unable to endure, physicians suspected deficiency-malaria and wanted to administer Ginseng and Aconite. Mengying said: It is not malaria. Usually, a plump constitution implies dampness; rich flavors brew phlegm, hence greasy coating and no thirst, prone to belching and vomiting. Contracting wind-warmth, the phlegm-dampness becomes a nest. Taking advantage of yin-deficiency and yang-disturbance, pathogens easily enter the Jueyin channel. How can warming tonics be given again to deplete fluids, trap pathogens, and hasten convulsions? (Warm pathogens invading liver-kidney yin cause insecure essence gate. Penile retraction occurs because liver-heat causes easy retraction of the jade stem, regardless of age. Chills are true heat presenting as false cold; deeper heat leads to deeper cold; thick clothes and blankets do not stop the chills.) In the afternoon, he administered a formula to regulate lung and stomach to resolve external pathogens and dispel phlegm-dampness, pivoting the mechanism. (Formula: Wine-fried Coptis Rhizome 0.8 qian, Wine-fried Scutellaria Root 3 qian, Black Gardenia Peel 1.5 qian, Fried Fermented Soybean 3 qian, Living Reed Rhizome 1 liang, Raw Coix Seed crushed 8 qian, Raw Winter Melon Seed 4 qian, Ginger Bamboo Shavings 3 qian, Fritillaria Bulb crushed 4 qian, Inula Flower 3 qian, Lai Orange Peel 1 qian.) In the morning, he used Kidney-Cooling and Liver-Calming method to pacify floating yang, search collaterals, and guard key points. (Wine-fried Anemarrhena Rhizome 1.5 qian, Wine-fried Phellodendron Bark 3 qian, Raw Tribulus Fruit de-spined 3 qian, Fresh Olives with core crushed first 2 pieces, Ginger Bamboo Sap diluted in a large wine cup 1 serving, Silver Flower 1 liang, Fresh Lotus Stem 5 qian, Green Lead Charcoal charcoal-roasted first for eight quarter-hours 3 liang.) The condition gradually improved, but he was prone to anger, easily catching external pathogens, and unwilling to eat bland food, leading to multiple relapses. Each relapse brought penile retraction and chills, even purple blood clots in gum fissures, slight redness in fingernails, and short, turbid, black, foul-smelling urine. Mengying said: Fortunately, the upper jiao is cleared, and the central pivot is functioning. Urgent need to tonify kidney yin and clear liver-heat. Alternating formulas using American Ginseng, Two Winters (Ophiopogon and Asparagus), Two Earths (Rehmannia), Cistanche, Pollen, Anemarrhena, Phellodendron, Coptis, Chinaberry, Dendrobium, Peony, Quartz, Oyster Shell, Tortoise Shell, Turtle Shell, Donkey-hide Gelatin, and Egg Yolk were taken in large doses for over twenty doses, with symptoms gradually receding. (American Ginseng 3 qian, Flower Ophiopogon Tuber 4 qian, Hook Dendrobium crushed and decocted first 1 liang, Wine-fried Anemarrhena Rhizome 3 qian, Wine-fried Coptis Rhizome 1 qian, Nanmu Pollen 4 qian, Whole White Peony Root crushed and decocted first 2 liang, Purple Quartz 5 qian, Oyster Shell 8 liang. Peony, Dendrobium, Quartz, and Oyster Shell charcoal-roasted first for eight quarter-hours, decocted in their own liquid. Next formula removes American Ginseng, Ophiopogon, Anemarrhena, Coptis, and Pollen; adds Large Prepared Rehmannia 1 liang, Large Raw Rehmannia 8 qian, Bright Winter Tuber cut 6 qian, Pale Cistanche 3 qian, Blood Turtle Shell 4 liang, charcoal-roasted with Quartz and Oyster Shell first for eight quarter-hours, decocted in their own liquid. Wine-fried Phellodendron Bark 1.5 qian, Sichuan Chinaberry Kernel crushed and decocted first 3 qian. Next formula removes Dendrobium, Peony, and Oyster Shell; adds Blood Tortoise Shell 2 liang, charcoal-roasted with Quartz and Turtle Shell first for eight quarter-hours, decocted in their own liquid. Clear Donkey-hide Gelatin 2 qian stewed and mixed; Egg Yolk separated from white, one piece added to medicine and decocted first.) Subsequently, this medicine was boiled into a paste for morning consumption, and Miao’s Zisheng Pill was taken at noon. All ingredients were not fried but sun-dried and ground into powder, formed into pills with Bamboo Sap, and taken with Perilla Leaf Decoction. Recovery began in autumn. Mengying said: Ancients used honey for pills, which is meaningless. One should vary according to the syndrome. This is one method.
Weng Jiaoshun’s wife had fever after childbirth. A monk from Zhulin Temple failed to cure her. Physicians Wen and Gong both advocated modified Shenghua Decoction, worsening the condition. Mengying palpated the pulse: soft, slippery, slightly rapid. He said: Underlying yin-deficiency, heat generated internally. Postpartum blood loss causes fever. Emaciation, delirium, and confusion are conditions that frighten physicians. Thirst preferring hot drinks mimics deficiency-cold. No wonder they guessed wind-cold and released exterior, or suspected blood stasis and attacked with purgatives. Pieces of Roasted Ginger, everyone using Peach Kernel and Cinnamon Twig, further depleted yin, worsening the disease. Fortunately, internal fluids were abundant, and phlegm-fluids did not dry up. He prescribed Ju Yin Liu Shen Tang removing Tangerine Peel and Pinellia, adding American Ginseng, Rehmannia, Pollen, Bamboo Shavings, Anemarrhena, and Raw White Peony. Cure in a few days. (Soft pulse indicates yang-deficiency; slippery indicates phlegm-excess; rapid indicates yin-deficiency with heat. Acorus Root added later 1 qian, Aged Star Phellodendron Stewed and mixed 0.7 qian, Inula Flower wrapped in silk 3 qian, White Poria 3 qian, American Ginseng 3 qian, Large Rehmannia 8 qian, Nanmu Pollen 4 qian, Ginger Bamboo Shavings 3 qian, Wine-fried Anemarrhena Rhizome 3 qian, Raw White Peony 4 qian.) Over ten days later, fever recurred. Mengying was requested again. He said: Floating, rapid, and wiry pulse indicates wind-warmth, different from the previous illness. Diarrhea with no urination is forced by lung-heat. Great thirst with no coating indicates scorched stomach juice. Urgently administer Tian Sheng Jian Zhong Tang frequently, which is sugarcane juice. The medicine focuses on large doses of sweet-cool substances. Indeed, fluids returned, tongue moistened, and gradual recovery ensued. (Rapid pulse indicates yin-deficiency with heat; combined floating and wiry indicates fluid-depletion and wind-stirring. Living Reed Rhizome 2 liang, Wine-fried Anemarrhena Rhizome 3 qian, Wine-fried Scutellaria Root 1 qian, Nanmu Pollen 5 qian, Flower Ophiopogon Tuber 4 qian, Northern Pear with skin 3 liang, Fresh Bamboo Shavings 3 qian, Fresh Lotus Root 5 qian, Silver Flower 8 qian, Hook Dendrobium crushed and decocted first 1 liang, Sour Plum Meat 3 qian, Fresh Sugarcane Juice one large wine cup mixed.)
Weng Jiaoshun’s mother contracted warm-heat disease. Mengying diagnosed: Advanced age with severe yin-deficiency, pathogenic qi predominant. *Yu Ban Lun Yao* states: Warm disease with severe deficiency leads to death. It means true yin is too deficient to resist pathogenic heat and extinguish the prairie fire. Danger lay in the two-week period. Indeed, she died on the fourteenth day.
Weng Jiaoshun also contracted warm-heat disease. Initial fever presented with red tongue and thirst, rapid and choppy pulse. Mengying said: Not a favorable sign. Underlying yin-deficiency existed. Amidst worry, fatigue, grief, and pain, five emotions burned internally, and warm pathogens pressed externally. Pathogens need not follow the sequence from Wei to Qi to Ying. Urgently clear Ying level, then cool Wei level. The illness was severe initially. Although treatment was correct, the condition inevitably worsened. Indeed, it worsened daily: confusion, deafness, spontaneous bloody diarrhea, red eyes, and delirious speech. Mengying only used Jin San Xi Jiao Di Huang Tang adding Silver Flower, Gypsum, Anemarrhena, Dendrobium, Gardenia, Fritillaria, Pollen, Orchid Leaf, Acorus, Bamboo Sap, Bamboo Shavings, Bamboo Leaf, and Wild Rice Bulb, varying them. (Treating Qi before Ying is standard; treating Ying before Qi is variant. Confusion and red eyes indicate underlying Ying-yin deficiency; warm pathogens directly injure Ying level. Adhering to standard Qi-first treatment would fail. Survival depends on delirious speech, meaning heat has invaded Ying but not fully left Qi. If heat fully entered Ying, there would be no speech. Formula: Powdered Rhinoceros Horn ground and taken with water 2 qian, Large Rehmannia 8 qian, Scrophularia Slice 1 liang. These two soaked in boiling water, strained, and the liquid used to decoct medicine. Silver Flower 1.5 liang, Wine-fried Anemarrhena Rhizome 3 qian, Raw Gypsum 8 qian decocted first, Black Gardenia Peel 3 qian, Acorus Root added later 1 qian, Jian Lan Leaf added later 3 qian. Next formula removes Rehmannia, adds Hook Dendrobium crushed and decocted first 1 liang. Next removes Gypsum and Gardenia Peel, adds Fritillaria Bulb crushed 1 liang, Nanmu Pollen 5 qian. Next removes Scrophularia, adds Ginger Bamboo Sap 2 liang. Next removes Silver Flower, adds Ginger Bamboo Shavings 4 qian, Fresh Bamboo Leaf 2 qian. Next removes Pollen, adds Water Chestnut with skin smashed 3 liang, Soaked Old Sea Cucumber 2 liang.) After more than ten doses, a filthy turbid coating suddenly appeared on the tongue, foul breath, ice-cold hands, and sweating on head and face. Mengying said: This is a sign of life. Yin-deficiency with deep-seated heat. Using Ying-clearing and Wei-cooling method for over ten days, Ying-yin gradually revived, pushing pathogens out, hence this coating appears. Due to weak constitution, battle-resolution cannot occur, showing cold limbs and sweating only on head/face, not yang-collapse. (Yang-collapse causes sweating on entire upper body.) Re-administered sweet-cool substances frequently. After three days, sweating stopped, heat retreated, coating became floral, and limbs warmed. (Yin-deficient constitution values fluids most. Frequent sweet-cool administration restores fluids, allowing qi mechanism to function. This is no different from tonifying yang in yang-deficiency to empower qi mechanism.) Throughout, Rhinoceros Horn totaled about 3 liang, violating no contradictory herbs. Subsequently, kidney-yin tonification led to recovery.
Wu Wengshi also had warm-heat disease. Initially refused medicine. Seven days later, Mengying diagnosed: Pathogen not strong, but frequent salivation requiring hand wiping, inability to defecate, no drinking/eating, no bowel movement/sleep, or excessive talking without fatigue, or long questioning without answer. This is seven-emotion stagnation, qi long-unsoothed, fluids condensing into phlegm, pathogens attaching. Treatment hitting the mark still difficult for quick cure. Waiting without medicine, how will disease leave? Thus, phlegm-dispelling, qi-moving, stomach-unblocking, and liver-calming agents were embedded in clearing-resolving formula. (Seven-emotion stagnation leads to qi-unsoothing; qi-unsoothing leads to fluid-phlegm condensation; fluid-phlegm allows pathogen attachment. Seven-emotions is remote cause; fluid-phlegm is proximate cause. Treat proximate first, then remote. Formula: Ginger-fried Scutellaria Root 1.5 qian, Ginger-fried Coptis Rhizome 0.6 qian, Black Gardenia Peel 1.5 qian, Fried Fermented Soybean 1.5 qian, Fritillaria Bulb crushed 4 qian, Ginger Bamboo Shavings 4 qian, Fried Immature Bitter Orange 1 qian, Aged Star Phellodendron stewed and mixed 0.8 qian, Acorus Root added later 0.6 qian, Lai Orange Peel 0.8 qian, Ginger-fried Perilla Leaf brushed and wrapped 3 qian, Raw Tribulus Fruit 1.5 qian.) Heat subsided on the fourteenth day. Phlegm-saliva decreased after a few days. Bowel movement resumed after ten days. Porridge intake increased, and recovery ensued.
Shen Dongping, over eighty, suffered from abdominal distension and constipation. Mengying diagnosed: Elderly with solid pulse, heaven bestowed abundance. Syndrome belongs to Yang-Knotting, method suitable for clearing fire. American Ginseng, Gypsum, White Peony, Anemarrhena, Pollen, Mulberry Bark, Tangerine Peel, Immature Bitter Orange, Licorice sent with Geng Yi Wan for four doses, resulting in cure. (American Ginseng 3 qian, Raw Gypsum decocted first 8 qian, Whole Large White Peony crushed and decocted first 2 liang, Wine-fried Anemarrhena Rhizome 3 qian, Nanmu Pollen 5 qian, Raw Mulberry White Bark 4 qian, Sweet Almond 3 qian, Salt-fried Tangerine Peel 1 qian, Raw Immature Bitter Orange 2 qian, Raw Licorice 3 qian. Medicine sends Geng Yi Wan 3 qian.)
Gu Shifu suffered from Yang disease, worsening with treatment. Sought Mengying. Pulse left cun like a hook. Said: Disease will not survive summer. Physician Xu questioned: This case has rebellious qi and bleeding, abdominal distension, and scrotal swelling, similar to Kang Bohou’s previous illness. Why did he recover and this die? Mengying said: That was pathogen obstruction; pulse strange but forceful and unyielding. This is true qi scattering; pulse fleeting like fat on soup surface, left cun like hook, indicating heart’s true organ pulse appearance. Obstruction can be unblocked; scattering cannot be gathered. Died in late spring.
Miss Sun, nearing fifteen, suffered from gingival bleeding for a long time, unresponsive to many doctors. Mengying diagnosed: Six pulses slow and slippery, Tiangu approaching. Prescribed Salvia Root, Rehmannia, Peach Kernel, Achyranthes Root, Poria, Anemarrhena, Talcum, Leonurus Fruit. One dose effective, cured in days. Menstruation soon started, no other issues. (Slow pulse indicates spleen-damp; slippery indicates heat-q not descending. Qi not descending causes blood rebellion, hence gingival bleeding. Gingival bleeding is blood-heat; blood rebellion carries stasis. Hence treat with cooling-blood and moving-stasis. Red Salvia 4 qian, Large Rehmannia 5 qian, Raw Peach Kernel ground 3 qian, White Poria 3 qian, Western Talcum decocted first 5 qian, Fragrant Anemarrhena 1 qian, Leonurus Fruit crushed and decocted first 4 qian, Wine-fried Huai Achyranthes 1 qian.)
Yu Jieshan suffered from malaria. Fan claimed caused by spring cold, used acrid-warm dispersants. Lai claimed caused by alcohol-dampness, treated with Wu Ling San, mixing Ginseng, Angelica, Ginger, Jujube. Condition worsened. Ten days later: epigastric stuffiness, abdominal distension, constipation, rebellious qi, restlessness, thirst, sweating, confusion, insomnia. Mengying viewed: Dampness accumulation yes, but warm wind invasion transformed to heat. Why wait for summer/autumn for heat-malaria? Clearing-resolving method, ten doses safe. Effective indeed. Cured in ten days. (Epigastric stuffiness and distension indicate heat-pathogen in upper jiao qi-level. Formula: Black Gardenia Peel 3 qian, Wine-fried Anemarrhena Rhizome 3 qian, Raw Gypsum decocted first 8 qian, Fried Immature Bitter Orange 1.5 qian, Aged Star Phellodendron stewed and mixed 0.8 qian, Raw Winter Melon Seed 4 qian, Salt-fried Tangerine Peel 1 qian, Living Reed Rhizome 2 liang, Raw Coix Seed crushed 8 qian, Acorus Root added later 1 qian, Ginger Bamboo Shavings added later 3 qian, Pumice and Clam Shell each 5 qian crushed and decocted first, Radish 1 liang simmered for decoction liquid.)
Zhu Nianmin suffered from diarrhea, claiming caught slight spring cold and drank liquor. Next day turned into dysentery. Lump formed in left abdomen, excruciating pain during dysentery. Mengying said: Yin-deficiency, wood-dryness, harassing stomach causes diarrhea. Mistakenly drinking fire-liquor makes angry wood expand further. Not cold. Quickly discard acrid-warm substances. Use Bai Tou Weng Tang adding Scutellaria, Chinaberry, Gardenia, Coptis, Sea Cucumber, Silver Flower, Cassia Seed, Immature Bitter Orange, Mung Bean Peel. Cured in over ten doses. (Argument complete in original case, left pulse likely floating-wiry-rapid and forceful on deep pressure. Bai Tou Weng 3 qian, Black Gardenia Peel 3 qian, Wine-fried Coptis Rhizome 1 qian, Wine-fried Scutellaria Root 2 qian, Silver Flower added later 1.5 liang, Cassia Seed 3 qian, Mung Bean Peel 5 qian. Next formula removes Coptis, Scutellaria, Gardenia Peel; adds Soaked Old Sea Cucumber 4 liang decocted first, Immature Bitter Orange crushed and decocted first 8 qian. Acrid-bitter clears heat treating branch; salty-cold nourishes yin treating root.)
Suo, young adult, hematemesis. Doctor gave Gui Pi Tang, vomiting worsened. Mengying saw: Face red glow, pulse hollow and large. Asked: Feet cold? Confirmed. Prescribed Liu Wei Di Huang Tang sending Fan Wan Rou Gui Xin 1 qian. Cured in one cup. (Face red glow indicates deficiency-fire flaming upward, pulse
