The above covers ninety medicinal substances in total, each assigned a short verse. Having clarified their ascending, descending, floating, and sinking properties, it further establishes the roles of Sovereign, Minister, Assistant, and Courier herbs. Some single herbs attack both internally and externally. Their names relate to Yin-Yang and Exterior-Interior. Some substances differ in effect depending on whether they are raw or processed, further distinguishing influences of Summer-heat, Dampness, Cold, and Wind. The language is concise yet comprehensive, leaving little unexpressed. This indeed elucidates what was not fully covered in the previous chapters. How could one fail to study them thoroughly and memorize them in detail?
Heaven possesses Yin and Yang, corresponding to Wind, Cold, Summer-heat, Dampness, Dryness, and Fire. The Three Yin and Three Yang correspond upwards to Heaven, manifested as Warm, Cool, Cold, and Hot Four Natures. Warm and Hot belong to Heaven's Yang. Cold and Cool belong to Heaven's Yin. This is the Yin-Yang of Heaven.
Earth possesses Yin and Yang, corresponding to Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth, with Growth, Transformation, Harvest, Storage, and Conservation responding downwards. Pungent, Sweet, Bland, Sour, Bitter, and Salty Five Flavors are manifestations of Earth. Pungent, Sweet, and Bland belong to Earth's Yang. Sour, Bitter, and Salty belong to Earth's Yin. This is the Yin-Yang of Earth.
Yin contains Yang, and Yang contains Yin. From dawn to noon, it is Heaven's Yang, specifically Yang within Yang. From noon to dusk, it is Heaven's Yang, specifically Yang within Yin. From nightfall to cockcrow, it is Heaven's Yin, specifically Yin within Yin. From cockcrow to dawn, it is Heaven's Yin, specifically Yin within Yang.
Thus, humans also correspond to these principles. In the human body, the exterior is Yang, the interior is Yin. The back is Yang, the abdomen is Yin. Zang organs are Yin, Fu organs are Yang. The five Zang organs—Heart, Liver, Spleen, Lung, Kidney—are Yin. The six Fu organs—Gallbladder, Stomach, Large Intestine, Small Intestine, Bladder, Sanjiao (Triple Burner)—are Yang. Why do we know that there is Yin within Yang and Yang within Yin? For instance, winter diseases reside in Yin, summer diseases in Yang, spring diseases in Yang, and autumn diseases in Yin. Knowing their locations allows for the application of acupuncture and herbal medicine.
The back is Yang; the Yang within Yang is the Heart. The back is Yang; the Yin within Yang is the Lung. The abdomen is Yin; the Yin within Yin is the Kidney. The abdomen is Yin; the Yang within Yin is the Liver. The abdomen is Yin; the Ultimate Yin within Yin is the Spleen. This reflects the mutual correspondence among Yin-Yang, Exterior-Interior, Inside-Outside, and Male-Female principles.
