Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi, 附子) weighing between one tael and three to four qian should be selected for its round, flat base and lotus-petal-like head. Prepare five or six bowls of urine from a healthy young boy (Tongbian, 童便). Bury the Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata in hot grass ash for half a day. While still warm, slice it. If white spots are visible on the cross-section, roast it on a tile until the white spots disappear. For urgent use, it may be roasted over fire until yellow; this is also effective. Generally, in cases of collapse and sinking of Yang Qi, chills occur from Zi hour to Wu hour, and fever arises before Hai hour. If heated Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata is ineffective, semi-raw and semi-cooked Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata should be used. If that is also ineffective, raw Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (one or two doses) should be used urgently, followed by treatment based on the specific symptoms.
