Lu Jiao San (Deer Horn Powder): Treats early-stage ru yong (breast abscess), characterized by lump formation, swelling, pain in the breast, aversion to cold, and fever, but before suppuration has occurred. Take three cun of deer horn tips, roast over charcoal fire until slightly red, preserving the medicinal properties (cun xing), and grind into powder. Take three qian per dose. Mix with one teacup of hot wine after meals. For severe cases, taking another dose will ensure resolution. Alternatively, use raw deer horn tips ground into fine powder, mixed with raw wine for oral administration of three qian; the lump will dissipate immediately.
Another prescription: Take a handful of Portulaca oleracea (Ma Chi Xian), wash clean, pound together with Pings Xiao (Sal Nitrati) until paste-like, and apply to the affected area for immediate pain relief. If fresh herbs are unavailable, harvesting whole plants including roots on the Dragon Boat Festival is also effective.
Moxibustion for Breast Swelling (from Zheng Zong): Treats sudden breast swelling and pain caused by emotional distress, overwork, or imbalance of cold and heat. Place four thick rush wicks crosswise inside a bowl, leaving about one cun exposed at the top. Cover the wicks with strips of Ping Shan coarse paper moistened with water, aligning the paper edges with the bowl's rim. Invert the bowl over the swollen breast, keeping the wick ends outside. Place a large ball of moxa wool under the bottom of the bowl and ignite it. Add more moxa as needed until moisture appears at the bowl's rim and internal pain ceases. For severe cases, repeat the procedure the next day to ensure resolution.
Jin Nang Xin Ding Xiao Ru Yong Shen Xiao Fang (Spiritually Effective Formula for Eliminating Breast Abscess, by Feng Shi): Jin Yin Hua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos) two liang, Pu Gong Ying (Taraxaci Herba) one liang, Gan Cao Jie (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma jointed part) three qian, Mo Yao (Myrrha) two qian (oil removed), Dang Gui Wei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix tail) six qian. Decoct with three bowls of water and three bowls of wine to obtain one bowl of liquid; take after meals. Re-decoct the dregs, extract the juice, and consume.
Another prescription (by Ge Zhichuan): Burn human teeth until the medicinal properties are preserved, grind into an extremely fine powder, mix with butter (su), and apply externally.
Jiu Yuan Wu Wu Tang (Five-Ingredient Decoction for Investigating Origins, from Wai Ke Ji Yan): Stops pain immediately for ru yong (breast abscess), yong ju (carbuncle), and fa bei (back carbuncle). Gua Lou (Trichosanthis Fructus) one fruit (ground), Zao Jiao Ci (Gleditsiae Spina) roasted until partially charred, Mo Yao (Myrrha) five qian, Ru Xiang (Olibanum) two qian 5 fen, Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) two qian 5 fen. Decoct with three jin of wine to obtain two jin; drink frequently.
Yuan Shou Dan (Elixir of Longevity, by Zhang Hanggu): Resolves early-stage ru yong (breast abscess); if already ulcerated, protects remaining tissue. Use turtle shell (remove the plastron, keep only the carapace), roast over fire until the medicinal properties are preserved, and grind into fine powder. Mix with hot wine and take three qian; drink enough alcohol to become intoxicated for recovery.
Fu Rong Gao (Hibiscus Paste): Treats ru yong (breast abscess), fa bei (back carbuncle), and yong ju (carbuncle); extracts the root cause, relieves pain, and promotes wound healing. Pound Fu Rong Hua (Hibisci Mutabilis Flos) into a paste. If flowers are unavailable, use the root: scrape off the rough bark with a bamboo knife, retaining only the tender white inner bark, and pound into a paste. Mix with a small amount of honey. If not ulcerated, apply around the perimeter leaving a central hole for ventilation; if ulcerated, pack into the wound to promote drainage of purulent material. After pus is exhausted, apply Gan Nong San (Dry Pus Powder).
Gan Nong San (Dry Pus Powder): Used for chronic draining ulcers with persistent pus discharge to dry the pus and heal the wound. Hai Piao Xiao (Sepiae Endoconcha), Tian Zhu Huang (Tutiae), Fei Xue Dan (Chao Zi Se color) three qian, Qing Fen (Calomelas) two qian, She Xiang (Moschus) 2.5 fen, Zhen Jiang Xiang Lao Jie (Santalum Album Lignum old node) three qian. Grind all ingredients to an ultra-fine powder and sprinkle dry onto the wound; pus will dry within a few days.
Early-stage Ru Yong (from Ji Sheng Fang): Pound the dorsal flesh of a live crucian carp steamed with rice into a paste and apply to the affected area for immediate resolution.
Ru Yong: Chuan Shan Jia (Manis Squama) fried two liang, Qing Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride) three liang. Grind into fine powder. Mix with hot wine and take three qian; additionally, drink enough alcohol to become intoxicated, cover with blankets to induce sweating, and the condition will resolve.
Resolution of Early-stage Ru Yong without Suppuration: Fill a large bowl halfway with vinegar. Heat a stone the size of a white egg until red-hot, quench it in the vinegar two or three times until the vinegar is hot. Immerse the affected breast in the hot vinegar. When cool, reheat the stone and quench again; repeat immersion three times for resolution.
Ru Yong Ulcerated Exposing the Core: Dry the hair from the abdomen of a cat, roast in a dry pan until the medicinal properties are preserved, and grind into powder. Sprinkle dry or mix with clear sesame oil and a small amount of Qing Fen (Calomelas), then rub gently.
Ru Yong Ulcerated Two to Three Finger-widths: Mix half a wine glass of scallion juice with one liang of Niu Pi Jiao (Asini Corii Colla). Slice the gelatin and stew over boiling water for one fu period (approx. two hours) until mature. Apply while hot to the ulcerated area and cover with mulberry bark paper. If internal pus remains, it will naturally detach; repeat application as necessary. If adherent, do not force removal; allow it to fall off naturally once granulation tissue has filled the wound.
Shen Xiao Gua Lou San (Spiritually Effective Trichosanthes Powder, from Wai Ke Ji Yan): Treats ru yong (breast abscess), ru ju (breast carbuncle), and nai lao (lactational consumption/chest tuberculosis). Chuan Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) washed in wine, de-radicle, baked and sliced; Sheng Gan Cao (Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) each five qian; Di Ru Xiang (Olibanum) two qian 5 fen (oil removed, ground separately); Ku Gua Lou (Trichosanthis Fructus with many seeds) one fruit, peel, bake, and grind into powder (or just mash if urgent); Ming Mo Yao (Myrrha) two qian 5 fen (oil removed, ground separately). Decoct with three sheng of non-fermented wine in a silver or ceramic vessel over low heat to obtain one sheng. Strain the clear liquid and divide into three doses; take after meals. For nai lao, this formula eliminates the root cause; if toxic heat has formed pus, it converts pus to yellow fluid; if toxic heat has not yet formed pus, it resolves it. For severe cases, continue dosing until resolution. Among many formulas for breast diseases, this one is uniquely miraculous and infallible.
Xiao Ru Yong Shen Fang (Spiritually Effective Formula for Eliminating Breast Abscess): Da Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) one branch (washed clean), Pu Gong Ying (Taraxaci Herba) four liang, Jin Yin Hua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos) four liang, Gan Cao Jie (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma jointed part) five qian. Decoct with two jin of good wine and two jin of water until reduced to one large bowl. Take hot before bed. Pound the dregs, decoct again with one jin of wine and one jin of water, and consume.
