Use the formula for guiding fire back to its source (guiding floating fire back to the Kidney), taken before meals, to strongly tonify the Liver and Kidneys. Then turbid Yin will descend and upper heat will naturally be eliminated; lower Yin will be sufficient and vision will naturally return; sunken nebulae will naturally float up, and ice-like nebulae will naturally dissolve. If the nebular membrane is excessively thick, separately add herbs that eliminate obstructions and disperse wind among the blood-nourishing medicines, taken after meals. Thus, both root and branch will benefit, and both upper and lower parts will receive their advantages. (From *Jinnang*)
Zhang Yunshan said: Seeing black flowers when opening the eyes is suitable for treating with Renshen Guben Wan (Ginseng Root Solidifying Pill). (From *Yanke Milan*)
He also said: Blurred vision and unclear sight are all caused by Yin deficiency with hyperactive fire. It is suitable to treat with Zhibai Dihuang Wan (Anemarrhena, Phellodendron and Rehmannia Pill) plus Ganjuhua (Chrysanthemi Flos).
The first method for brightening the eyes: Conserve alcohol and sexual activity, abstain from anger, do not read books at night, reduce mental exertion, focus on inner vision, simplify external vision, rise late in the morning, sleep early at night, and use fewer pungent and drying substances.
The essential secret for brightening the eyes: Upon waking from sleep at night, open the eyes and rotate them forty-nine times, often rotating left and right. This will permanently prevent eye diseases.
The self-healing method for eye diseases without medication: When urinating at night while lying down, forcefully open the eyes and rotate the pupils left and right ten or more times each. Then visualize the lower body. Within a few days, the fire will descend. Standing up to urinate is even better. Using this method normally can prevent fire from flaring upward.
*Xinfa* states: The syndrome of everted eyelids is formed by blood stagnation and Qi obstruction in the Stomach meridian. Children often have this disease, characterized by outwardly everted eyelids, accompanied by symptoms involving the tongue and lips.
He also said: For those suffering from blurred vision, regardless of the time, sit quietly and rest. Rotate the eyes seven times to the left and seven times to the right, close them tightly for a short while, then suddenly open them wide. Practice this continuously for a long time, and the stagnant fire and turbid Yin will be transported out, allowing clear Yang and essence-Qi to shine alone.
He also said: When treating nebulae, one must distinguish which meridian they originate from, as well as the shape and color of the nebulae, adding meridian-guiding herbs accordingly. For example, Li Dongyuan treated a woman whose greenish hue appeared moving upward from below, knowing it came from the Yangming meridian. However, green is not the correct color of the five Zang organs; it was likely a disease resulting from the combination of Lung and Kidney. Just as a painter mixes black with calamine powder to create a specific color, upon careful observation matching the nebula, it was undoubtedly a Lung and Kidney disease. Thus, herbs draining pathogenic factors from the Lung and Kidney were used as the sovereign drug, and Yangming meridian herbs as the envoy drug. The treatment was very effective. Later, the patient relapsed three times, with different meridians and colors involved. He reasoned that meridian imbalance must be causing the persistent eye disease. Inquiry confirmed this. Consequently, blood-nourishing and Yin-tonifying herbs were made into pills for consumption, preventing recurrence forever. Observing this case, how can distinguishing colors and assigning meridians be ignored?
He also said: Some eye treatments involve pricking with a three-edged needle to release blood until cured, which aligns with the principle in *Neijing*: "When blood is excessive, it should be drained." However, this is only suitable when the condition is in its initial stage with abundant blood and heat, specifically in the Taiyang and Yangming meridians, because these two meridians have abundant Qi and blood. Bleeding from other meridians may worsen the condition. Therefore, it is said that bleeding Taiyang and Yangming improves vision, while bleeding Shaoyang and Yangming worsens it.
Li Dongyuan treated a man who, after eating pork pancakes with garlic and falling asleep drunk on a heated kang, woke up the next day with dilated pupils and unclear vision. Various prescriptions failed. He used wine-fried Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) and Lianlian (Coptidis Rhizoma) to drain heat as the sovereign drug; Danggui Shen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) and Shengdi Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) to nourish blood and cool blood as the minister drugs; Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus) to astringently secure the dilated pupil; Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Dongqing (Asparagi Radix), Dongbai (Ophiopogonis Radix), Digupi (Lycii Cortex), Sheng Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), and Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) to tonify the middle and suppress Qi with bitter and sweet flavors as the assistant drugs; and Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) as the envoy drug to guide the herbs. The patient recovered instantly.
Zhu Danxi treated a young adult who could not see objects upon waking in the morning. After lying down for a moment, he could see slightly but unclearly. His appetite decreased, and he felt extremely fatigued. His pulse was slow and large, becoming scattered and weak upon heavy pressure. He surmised it was caused by dampness. Inquiry confirmed he had slept on damp ground for half a month. He used Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) as the sovereign drug, Huangbo (Phellodendri Cortex) and Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) as the minister drugs, and Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) for ten doses until cured. These are all divine insights into treating the root cause.
Wang Haizang treated a girl who, upon reaching marriageable age, suffered from eye disease for three years. Her eyes were red and swollen, difficult to open. Taking wind-dispersing and heat-clearing herbs instead caused nebulae to form, obscuring the pupil from the canthus. The nebula in the right eye moved upward from below. Her pulse was short and solid. Zhang Jiegou stated: A short pulse indicates accumulation. The classics say: Pathogens moving from inside to outside indicate Shaoyang disease; moving upward from below indicates Yangming disease. Thus, there was accumulation in the Shaoyang and Yangming meridians, suppressing the Zang organs, leading to failure of clear Yang to ascend and turbid Yin to descend. He used herbs to remove accumulation added with Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) and Longdancao (Gentianae Radix), taken as one pill dissolved each morning. Within a day, hard, bean-sized black blood clots were passed. Thereafter, the nebula receded and vision cleared.
Feng Luzhan said: In my youth, I studied too hard and often suffered from eye diseases. Now, reading or writing slightly more easily triggers an outbreak. During outbreaks, I only use Bawei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill) added with Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) and Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus), taking five or six qian before each meal, totaling about one liang and five or six qian per day. Externally, I use over one qian of Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) and a small amount of Tongqing (Azurite), decocted into a concentrated juice. After washing two or three times, once the red obstruction lightens slightly, I add two or three fen of Renshen (Ginseng Radix) and wash gently. Then, brightness returns and vision becomes normal again.
I, Cheng, say: Whenever treating epidemic eye diseases, absolutely avoid using Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) and Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos) within the first seven days. If used too early, rapid recovery will be difficult. This is a secret method of specialized ophthalmology.
