The *Jue Lun Pian* (Treatise on Jue) states: What is the reason for the cold and heat manifestations in Jue syndrome? When Yang Qi is deficient at the lower part, Cold Jue occurs; when Yin Qi is deficient at the lower part, Heat Jue occurs. ("Yang" refers to the three Yang meridians of the foot. "Yin" refers to the three Yin meridians of the foot. "Lower" refers to the feet. This passage explains that Jue disease is divided into cold and heat types because the Qi of the six meridians of the foot has an excess or deficiency.) Why does the heat in Heat Jue necessarily begin at the soles of the feet? (Yang governs the exterior, while Jue involves internal reversal, hence the question.) Yang Qi originates from the lateral aspects of the five toes of the foot, while Yin meridians gather at the soles of the feet and converge at the sole center. Therefore, when Yang Qi prevails, the soles become hot. (The Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian emerges from the lateral end of the little toe, the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian emerges from the end of the second toe, and the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian emerges from the ends of the middle and big toes, all ascending along the dorsal aspect of the foot. The Liver, Spleen, and Kidney Yin meridians gather at the soles and converge at the sole center. Because Yin Qi is weak, the soles become hot. This passage indicates that the heat in Heat Jue resides in the Yin aspect due to Yang prevailing over Yin.) Why does the cold in Cold Jue necessarily start from the five toes and ascend to the knees? (Yin governs the interior, while Jue involves external manifestation, hence the question.) Yin Qi originates from the medial aspects of the five toes, gathers below the knees, and converges above the knees. Therefore, when Yin Qi prevails, there is cold from the toes up to above the knees. This cold does not come from the exterior but arises entirely from within. (The Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian originates from the medial end of the big toe, the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian originates from the hair tuft at the tip of the big toe, and the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian originates below the little toe, slanting towards the sole center. All ascend along the medial aspect of the foot, pass through the medial thigh, and enter the abdomen, thus gathering below the knees and converging above them. This passage indicates that the Jue reversal in Cold Jue ascends to the knees because Yin prevails over Yang.) Why does Jue sometimes cause abdominal fullness, sometimes sudden loss of consciousness, or a delay of half a day to a full day before regaining consciousness? When Yin Qi is excessive in the upper part, the lower part becomes deficient. Lower deficiency leads to abdominal distension and fullness. When Yang Qi is excessive in the upper part, Qi from the lower part becomes heavy and reverses upward, causing pathogenic Qi to reverse. Reversal leads to chaos in Yang Qi, and chaos in Yang Qi results in loss of consciousness. (Abdominal fullness caused by excessive Yin Qi in the upper part belongs to Cold Jue. Loss of consciousness caused by excessive Yang Qi in the upper part belongs to Heat Jue.)
