This is referred to as "returning to position" (Fu Wei). Heaven uses six as its rhythm, and Earth uses five as its system. When circulating the Qi of Heaven, six periods constitute one complete cycle (Bei); when concluding the records of Earth, five years constitute one revolution (Zhou). ("Six Jie" refers to the distribution of the Six Qi. "Wu Zhi" refers to the distribution of the Five Positions. A position corresponds to one year, and a year governs one year; thus, five years make one Zhou, and six years make one Bei. "Bei" means experiencing the Qi of Heaven completely. "Zhou" means circling the positions of Earth. The reason why the position of Earth mentions six but counts five is because the Qi of Heaven does not descend upon Ministerial Fire.) Ruler Fire is established by name, while Ministerial Fire is established by position. (Ruler Fire is on the right of Ministerial Fire; it only establishes its name at the Ruler's position and does not establish a Sui Qi. Therefore, the Qi of Heaven does not pair with its Qi to move. The upright nature of Ruler Fire guards its position and obeys the mandate of Heaven, merely proclaiming the orders of Fire. Because it serves Heaven through its name, it is called "Ruler Fire by name." Because it guards its position and receives the mandate, it is called "Ministerial Fire by position.") When Five and Six combine, there are seven hundred and twenty Qi units, which constitutes one Ji (Epoch), totaling thirty years; one thousand four hundred and forty Qi units, totaling sixty years, constitute one Zhou (Cycle). Deficiency and Excess are all manifested here. (In calendar calculations, one Qi equals fifteen days. Multiplying accordingly, accumulating seven hundred and twenty Qi units equals thirty years, and accumulating one thousand four hundred and forty Qi units equals sixty years. The Classic states: "When Excess comes, Deficiency follows; when Deficiency comes, Excess follows." Thus, within sixty years, both Deficiency and Excess are observed. This continues the discussion above on the meaning of mutual induction between Upper and Lower, combining it with the numbers of Zhou and Ji. Upper is Heaven; Lower is Earth. Upper and Lower mutually induce: Heaven rotates to the right, adding Yin and Yang below the Earth; Earth rotates to the left, bringing Yin and Yang to the top of Heaven to mutually induce, thereby governing the Year (Sui) and the Step (Bu). The Yin and Yang of Heaven are Wind, Heat, Dryness, Dampness, Cold, plus Fire to make six numbers. This is because Heat in Heaven is divided into Summer Heat and Fire Qi, so the Three Yin and Three Yang each offer homage upwards. The Yin and Yang of Earth are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, also plus Fire to make six numbers. This is because Fire on Earth is divided into two forms: Ruler Fire and Ministerial Fire, so Growth, Transformation, Harvest, and Storage each respond downwards. Growth is the Way of Heaven; Storage and Killing are the Way of Earth. Heavenly Yang governs generation; within Yang there is Yin, hence Yang generates and Yin grows. Earthly Yin governs killing; within Yin there is Yang, hence Yang kills and Yin stores. Although Heaven and Earth differ in height and depth, they each have their own application of Yin and Yang. Heaven possesses only Yin, thus it can descend; Earth possesses only Yang, thus it can ascend. Hence, it is said that each has Yin and Yang. For instance, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, and Fire are the Yin and Yang of Earth. Growth, Transformation, Harvest, and Storage imply that within Yang there is Yin, and within Yin there is Yang. Therefore, to know the Yin and Yang of Heaven and Earth: the Yin and Yang of Heaven descend to add to the Qi of Earth, jointly governing the Year. Then, the Qi responding to Heaven moves without cessation. Because Earth's governance of the Year relies on Ministerial Fire not dominating the transport, but only the Five Movements cycling, the Six Qi of Heaven are added. Usually, after five years, there is a surplus of one year to the right, migrating with Earth, moving from one position without cessation. The Yin and Yang of Earth ascend to meet the Qi of Heaven, jointly governing the Step. Then, the Qi responding to Earth remains still and guards its position. Because Earth's governance of the Step involves Wood, Ruler/Ministerial Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water without distinction, each governing one step to complete the period, its ascent to meet the Six Qi of Heaven for joint governance usually involves six periods aligning and returning to the start. The Step of governance circles together and quietly guards its position. Thus, the dynamic governance of the Year and the static governance of the Step mutually induce; the outer rotation upward and the inner movement downward approach each other. Consequently, Yin and Yang interlace, giving rise to changes of increase, decrease, fullness, and emptiness. Heaven using six as the rhythm and Earth using five as the system represents the number of mutual induction between Upper and Lower. Generally, the Six Qi of Heaven each govern one year, so six periods make one Bei. The six positions of Earth, where Ruler Fire is by name and Ministerial Fire by position, result in five years making one Zhou. Five and Six combined yield thirty years as one Ji, and sixty years as one Zhou. Among them, interlaced Yin and Yang either share similar Qi categories, increasing due to abundance, becoming Excessively vigorous; or differ in Qi categories, decreasing due to scarcity, becoming Deficiently empty. These variations are all visible.)
