Chen Shigong stated: "Dacou Gongmu" (Poison from smallpox attacking the eyes) occurs because, during the stage of pustule formation, no medication was used to promote the filling of pus, resulting in incomplete pustules and subsequent regression of fluids. This leads to swelling and redness of the eyelids, inability to open the eyes, and the upward flare of toxic fire that attacks both eyes. At this time, it is imperative to administer Qingdu Baomu Tang (Clear Toxins and Protect Eyes Decoction) continuously for two or three doses to resolve the ascending toxic fire. Not only can eye complications be avoided, but if one neglects it, saying, 'There are pox in the eyes; I cannot treat this,' the toxic fire will become extremely hyperactive. Membranes will cover the pupils, causing day-and-night crying and extreme pain. Although life may be barely sustained, blindness results, leaving the patient a cripple. Alas! The error caused by mediocre physicians is most severe here. Mr. Nie Qingjiang said well: "This is not shaped pox, but formless fire." Generally, shaped pox affecting the throat, mouth, and tongue do exist; however, when external pox swell, internal pox also swell; when external pox crust over, internal pox also crust over. Only the poison entering the eyes manifests at the time of crusting, proving clearly that it is not shaped. Therefore, patients should initially use Qingdu Baomu Tang to resolve toxins beforehand. If membranes are observed covering the cornea (black pearl) and sclera (white pearl), or invading the pupil, subsequently treat slowly with Qingdu Boyi Tang (Clear Toxins and Dispel Membranes Decoction). One dose can be given every other day or every two days. Even after three or four months, safety can be ensured. One must absolutely avoid excessive use of cold-natured herbs, expecting effects within a few doses or success within ten days. Nor should one heed mediocre practitioners using false eye powders that cause immediate damage. Furthermore, one must not shirk treatment due to the family's stinginess or poverty, as this severely harms accumulated virtue. Guard against this, guard against this. (From *Zhengzong*)
*Miji* states: "This arises from residual heat remaining after variola (smallpox/variolae), with toxic vapors attacking the eyes, or due to Qi deficiency where pox fail to erupt and pus fails to form. Physicians administering tonifying and lifting agents containing Ginseng and Astragalus may cure the pox, but the heat-toxin then attacks the eyes, causing eyelids to remain closed, tearing, swelling, pain, photophobia, or conditions such as crab-eye (corneal protrusion) and membranes. Initially, administer Xiaodu Huadu Tang (Disinfect and Transform Toxins Decoction). [Ingredients: Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Forsythiae Fructus (Lianqiao), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), Carthami Flos (Honghua), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), Sappan Lignum (Sumu), Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu), Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai), Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), Rehmanniae Radix (Shengdi), Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma), Puerariae Radix (Gan Ge), Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Ligustici Wallichii Rhizoma (Gaoben), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin), Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu), Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu). Decoct in water. This formula is also known as Xidou Dan (Pox-Thinning Elixir). On the day before Start of Spring, Start of Summer, Start of Autumn, and Start of Winter, decoct one dose and expose it overnight to the dew. If raining, place under the eaves overnight. Heat on the second day via steaming. For newborns, take 3-5 spoons; for those over one year old, take half a dose; for 3-4 year olds, take one full dose. If taken four times, one can ensure permanent immunity from smallpox; even if contracted, the eruption will be sparse. This is a miraculous formula.] Alternatively, use Qingliang San (Cooling Powder); if bowel movements are normal, remove Mirabilite (Xiaoshi) and Rheum Palmatum (Dahuang); or use Baidu San (Defeat Toxin Powder) added with Forsythiae Fructus (Lianqiao) and Arctii Fructus (Niubangzi). If physicians recklessly use too many membrane-dispelling and draining formulas, the membranes may thicken, making it difficult to treat. If the Spleen and Stomach are injured and abdominal regulation is impaired, administer Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction), Fuling Zaoshi Tang (Poria Damp-Drying Decoction), Renshen Qipi Wan (Ginspen Spleen-Enlightening Pill), or Shihu Yeguang Wan (Dendrobium Night-Shining Pill), and the condition will gradually improve.
