Feng Luzhan stated: Facial pain is due to Fire, as all Yang meridians converge on the face, and Fire is Yang; the flourishing of the Heart manifests on the face, and the Heart governs Ministerial Fire. However, sudden pain is mostly caused by excess Fire, while chronic pain is often due to Blood deficiency. The Stomach governs the front of the face, and the intestines and stomach are like a marketplace; if heat toxins from diet accumulate internally, they manifest externally, causing pain. Furthermore, pain occurring after overexertion or hunger indicates insufficiency of Middle Qi.

It can also be caused by women who prefer to apply lead powder, resulting from lead toxicity. Additionally, it can arise from sweating after sexual intercourse and exposure to wind while fanning oneself.
