[Symptoms of Heat-Type Huoluan] When damp-heat prevails, there is severe colic in the heart and abdomen, vomiting above and diarrhea below, mental restlessness and agitation, and unconsciousness. This is caused by the excess of heat pathogen.
[Etiology of Heat-Type Huoluan] Summer-heat dominates the season, and the earth qi of the year is turbid. The onset is sudden and chaotic, as stated in the *Neijing* regarding the insufficiency of earth qi in a given year, where...
[Pulse of Heat-Type Huoluan] The pulse is rarely large and rapid (Hong-Shu), or it may appear deep and rapid (Chen-Shu), choppy with pauses (Cu-Zhi), or restless and fast (Zao-Ji).
[Treatment of Heat-Type Huoluan] Qing Shu Yi Yuan San (Clear Summerheat and Benefit Primordial Powder), Jia Mi Gan Lu Yin (Home-Secret Sweet Dew Decoction), Huang Lian Xiang Ru Yin (Coptis and Mosla Decoction) are decocted and taken hot, with Yi Yuan San mixed in for consumption. If there is internal stagnation, use Qing Shu Yi Yuan San, Xiang Ru (Moslae Herba), and Xian Huo Xiang (Fresh Pogostemonis Herba) decocted in water, then mix with Liu Yi San (Six-to-One Powder).

[Symptoms of Cold-Type Huoluan] When violent cold prevails, there is aversion to cold, body pain, abdominal pain with vomiting and diarrhea, cyanosis of the lips and nails. This is Cold-Type Huoluan, as described by Zhang Zhongjing regarding the Three Yin meridians...
[Etiology of Cold-Type Huoluan] Yang qi is inherently deficient, and middle qi is insufficient. Accidental exposure to seasonal cold pathogens directly invades the Three Yin meridians, causing symptoms of Yin-Cold Huoluan to arise.
[Pulse of Cold-Type Huoluan] The pulse is mostly deep and slow (Chen-Chi), or may appear deep and hidden (Chen-Fu), or deep and tight (Chen-Jin). If cold is severe and yang is exhausted, all six pulses may be imperceptible.
[Treatment of Cold-Type Huoluan] For Taiyin Huoluan, use Lizhong Wen (Warm the Middle) and Buzhong Tang (Tonify the Middle Decoction). For Shaoyin and Jueyin Huoluan, use Sini Tang (Reverse the Collapse Decoction). If there is internal stagnation...

Commentary by Zhen: Zhang Dairen said that Huoluan symptoms are caused by wind, dampness, and cold pathogens. Earth (Spleen) is overcome by Wood (Liver/Wind); stagnation generates heat, which rises, causing vomiting. Vomiting is related to... Damp-earth flows downward, causing diarrhea; diarrhea is related to dampness. Wind is urgent and severe, causing muscle twitching/convulsions; twitching is related to wind. These three points expound on the *Neijing*'s theory of "Earth Stagnation," where Huoluan flows downward, wind prevails, leading to Huoluan with undigested food (Sunxie); if heat arrives, it leads to the three types of Huoluan with vomiting and diarrhea. The *Mingli Lun* describes Zhang Zhongjing using Lizhong Tang and Sini Tang to treat Shanghan Huoluan; this correctly discusses cold pathogens directly invading the Three Yin meridians...
