The hoarseness of voice caused by the toxin of macules and pustules is due to the congestion of lung heat; Xuan Shen (Radix Scrophulariae) and Sheng Ma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae) are highly effective. After the eruption, Jiajian Liangge San (Modified Cool the Middle Powder) should be used; after the resolution, Er Cha San (Child's Tea Powder) will clear the voice.
[Note] Aphonia (loss of voice) results from the blockage of the lung orifices by heat-toxin. For aphonia at the initial stage of macules, Yuan Shen Sheng Ma Tang (Scrophularia and Cimicifega Decoction) is the primary formula; for aphonia after the eruption has occurred, Jiajian Liangge San (Modified Cool the Middle Powder) is the primary formula; for hoarseness after the resolution of macules, Er Cha San (Child's Tea Powder) is the primary formula.
Yuan Shen Sheng Ma Tang (See formula under "Sore Throat")
Jiajian Liangge San (Modified Cool the Middle Powder)
Bo He Ye (Menthae Haplocalycis Folium), Sheng Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus raw), Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructum, heart removed), Sheng Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma raw), Ku Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix, heart removed), Niu Bang Zi (Arctii Fructus, stir-fried and crushed), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix).
Decoct in water and take orally.
[Formula Song] Jiajian Liangge treats aphonia, with Bo He, Zhi Zi, and Xuan Shen together; Lian Qiao, Gan Cao, and Ku Jie Geng, along with Mai Dong, Niu Bang Zi, and Huang Qin.
Er Cha San (Child's Tea Powder)
Peng Sha (Borax), Hai Er Cha (Catechu).
Grind into fine powder, mix one spoonful of medicine with one cup of cool water, and take orally.
Why does vomiting and counterflow occur when macules erupt? This is because fire-pathogens disturb the stomach. Zhu Ru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia) and Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) are the main treatments; harmonizing the middle and clearing heat will settle the vomiting.
[Note] Vomiting caused by measles is due to internal pressure from fire-pathogens causing the stomach qi to rebel. One must use Zhu Ru Shi Gao Tang (Bamboo Sheath and Gypsum Decoction) to harmonize the middle and clear heat, so that vomiting will stop naturally.
Zhu Ru Shi Gao Tang (Bamboo Sheath and Gypsum Decoction)
Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, prepared with ginger), Chi Ling (Poria cum Risus), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Zhu Ru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia), Sheng Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma raw), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum).
Use Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) as a guide, decoct in water, and take orally.
[Formula Song] Zhu Ru Shi Gao Tang treats vomiting, Ban Xia prepared with ginger paired with Fu Ling; Chen Pi, Zhu Ru, and Sheng Gan Cao, Shi Gao and fire pathogens are jointly resolved.
When toxic-heat shifts into the Large Intestine meridian, abnormal transmission and transformation lead to diarrhea and loose stools. At the initial stage, Sheng Ma Ge Gen Tang (Cimicifugae and Puerariae Decoction) with modifications is used; if the rash has erupted and turned yellow, Huang Lian Jie Du Tang (Coptis Decoction to Relieve Toxicity) is used to clear heat.
[Note] Diarrhea caused by measles occurs when toxic-heat shifts into the intestines and stomach, disrupting normal transmission and transformation. The practitioner must absolutely avoid using warm-tonifying formulas. For diarrhea at the initial onset of the rash, Sheng Ma Ge Gen Tang (Cimicifugae and Puerariae Decoction) added with Chi Ling (Poria cum Risus), Zhu Ling (Polyporus), and Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma) is the primary formula; for diarrhea occurring after the rash has erupted, Huang Lian Jie Du Tang (Coptis Decoction to Relieve Toxicity) added with Chi Ling (Poria cum Risus) and Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis) is the primary formula.
