To treat conditions such as hematemesis (vomiting blood), epistaxis (nosebleed), and coughing up sputum with blood, where there has been significant blood loss, resulting in physical weakness and emaciation, mental dullness and fatigue, spiritual timidity and weakness, while the bleeding has not yet completely stopped.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (1 qian, tonifies Qi to generate Blood; after hematemesis or epistaxis, decoct and take 1 liang; if internal injury causes bleeding like a gushing spring, combine with Jingjie Hui (Ash of Schizonepetae Spica) and Zheng Baiye (Steamed Biota Orientalis Folium), taken with Baomian Shui (water made from white flour)). Huangqi (Astragali Radix) (honey-fried, 1 qian, expels evil blood from the five zang organs; combine with Zisu Mo (Powder of Perillae Folium) for use when hematemesis or epistaxis does not stop). Gancao (Licorice Root) (roasted, 0.5 fen, nourishes and supplements Blood, and treats diseases involving coughing up pus and blood). Baiji (Bletillae Rhizoma) (1 qian, or ground into powder, dipped in Yangfei (Ovis/Capra Lung) and eaten to stop pulmonary damage-induced hemoptysis and epistaxis; taken with water to stop epistaxis). Baihe (Lilii Bulbus) (1 qian, primarily treats lung disease with hemoptysis, or steamed with honey for consumption). Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) (2 qian, supplements Blood and fills the marrow). Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) (2 qian, cools Blood, generates Blood, stops bleeding). Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (body and head parts, 1.5 qian, stops bleeding and nourishes Blood). Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex) (1 qian, harmonizes Blood, generates Blood, cools Blood, retreats latent fire within the Blood). Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini) (stir-fried with Ge Fen (Calaminis Pulvis) until it forms beads, 1 qian, primarily treats hematemesis due to deficiency and wasting, and hemoptysis due to lung deficiency). Lujiaojiao (Colla Cornus Cervi) (1 qian, same treatment indications as above).
The above ten herbs are substances that supplement Blood, nourish Blood, clear Blood, and return Blood to its source. Among them, Renshen and Huangqi are used as the principal agents, taking advantage of the principle that "Yin relies on Yang to generate" (Blood generation depends on Qi). Provided the pulse is not deficient, rapid, wiry, or long, they may be taken at will. Do not rigidly adhere to Wang Bing's erroneous theories, lest you incur the disaster of "making the deficient more deficient." Prepare these as one dose, using five Oujie (Nymphaeae Nelumbinis Rhizomatis Node), decoct with water. Just before administration, add one zhan of Tongbian (Urine of a healthy child) and two bei of Oujiang (Lotus Root Juice). Wait until warm, then take slowly and gradually.
Note: *Chu Cheng Yi Shu* states: "The human throat has orifices; coughing blood kills." The lung tissue is pure and empty, unable to tolerate even minute foreign matter. Once blood infiltrates, coughing promotes further infiltration, and infiltration promotes further coughing. Any medicinal ingredients with strong flavors or pungent odors are disadvantageous. Only drinking Tongbian as a single-decoction soup ensures that out of every hundred patients, none will die. If cold-natured cooling drugs are taken, out of every hundred patients, none will survive. Furthermore, Wu Shi stated: For various deficiency-type hematemesis, epistaxis, and hemoptysis, Tongbian must be used, as its efficacy is very swift. Urine nourishes Yin and descends Fire, clears stasis, and stops hematemesis, epistaxis, and other bleeding types. Select urine from boys under twelve years old, prohibit cooking with salty or sour condiments, and provide ample Mi Yin (rice drink) to assist the water passages. Use one zhan per dose, add three to five drops of Jiangzhi (Ginger Juice) or Jiujiangzhī (Chinese Chive Juice), and take slowly. Administer two to three times daily. In cold weather, stew and warm before taking; over time, effectiveness will naturally appear.
