To treat Zhang disease (miasma malaria), regardless of whether it is cold or heat type. Whether it occurs once a day, every two days, or every three days.
Changshan (Radix Dichroae, 5 liang, stir-fried seven times with vinegar), Wumei (Fructus Mume, 40 grains, pitted), Binglang (Semen Arecae, 40 grains), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 3 liang).
Stir-fry the above ingredients together again, grind into fine powder. Use ginger juice to mix with rice paste to form pills, sized like Sophora japonica seeds. When symptoms have not yet started, swallow twenty-one pills with good wine. Take seven or eight times a day; this is especially effective. Do not take when symptoms are active. After the Zhang disease stops, avoid chicken, fish, mutton, noodles, green onions, leeks, raw and cold fruits and vegetables, and all toxic substances.
Avoid wind and cold, abstain from sexual intercourse, and do not become angry. Zhang disease and malaria are the same disease but have different names. However, malaria has fixed rules, while Zhang disease is variable and strange. The method for treating Zhang disease: for those that are continuous without interruption, make them intermittent; for those with clear rhythm and timing, reduce their severity. Then use this formula. Without phlegm, there is no malaria; therefore, Changshan is used to eliminate phlegm. Cold and heat pathogens usually reside between Ying-Wei (nutritive and defensive qi) and muscles. Changshan can remove pathogens from the skin and pores. Assisted by Binglang, which descends stagnant Qi, eliminates accumulation, and promotes phlegm drainage. The sweetness of Gancao harmonizes Middle Jiao Qi. The sourness of Wumei astringes and retains outwardly leaking Yang Qi. The pungency of Shengjiang opens the stomach and facilitates phlegm drainage. Once phlegm is removed, the root of Zhang disease is eliminated.
Among formulas to intercept Zhang disease, this one is the most excellent.
For treating Zhang malaria occurring once a day or every other day, with clear rhythm and timing, use this to intercept it.
Changshan, Binglang, Qingpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride), Caoguo (Fructus Tsaoko, peeled), Houpo (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis), Gancao.
Take equal parts of each. Decoct with one zhong of water and one zhong of wine. Cover with cotton cloth after decoction, and leave overnight under the starlight and moonlight. Take cold on the morning of the same day. Do not consume hot food or drink after taking the medicine. Without phlegm, malaria cannot form. This formula uses Changshan to drive out phlegm, Binglang to descend phlegm Qi, Caoguo to warm the middle and dispel cold-phlegm, and the pungency of Houpo, Qingpi, and Chenpi to move Qi. When Qi moves, phlegm cannot remain. Gancao regulates the Stomach and harmonizes the Middle Jiao. Together, they constitute a formula for moving Qi and eliminating phlegm. Once phlegm is eliminated, the root of malaria disappears, so it is natural that Zhang disease will not recur.
Note: The treatment of Zhang disease is the most difficult. It is applicable when fever initially starts and is continuous without interruption, or after warming the middle, securing the lower, and when Zheng Qi (healthy qi) has reconciled. When the rhythm is clear, timing is fixed, Zheng Qi gradually harmonizes, and damp-cold in the Lower Jiao has been expelled, any malaria-intercepting drugs that do not involve cold-cooling properties and do not cause vomiting or diarrhea can be used.
