After childbirth, the ascending and descending of Qi and Blood lose their normal rhythm, stagnating in the joints. This causes the sinews and vessels to be pulled tight, resulting in pain throughout the body. In severe cases, there is stiffness of the waist and spine, spasms of the hands and feet, fever, and headache. Do not treat this as Taiyang disease (Taiyang Bing, a syndrome caused by pathogenic factors affecting the Taiyang meridian). If mistaken for Taiyang disease and treated with incorrect sweating methods, it will cause trembling of the sinews and vessels, coldness of the hands and feet, and generate other complications. At this time, use Cuntong San (Cuntong Powder) added with Sangjisheng (Taxilli Herba). (Refer to Section 31)
If pressure relieves the pain, it is due to Blood deficiency. Use Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with Paojiang (Prepared Ginger Rhizome), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma). (Refer to Supplement 7)
For bluish-purple swelling throughout the body, take one layer of Maiya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus) and one layer of Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), place them in a clay pot, seal tightly with salt mud, calcine until carbonized, grind into powder, and take two qian with wine. It is extremely effective for treating blood flowing into various meridians.
For finger joint pain due to consumptive disease (Xu Lao) and incessant sweating, boil pig kidneys in water, then decoct Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Huangqi (Astragali Membranacei Radix), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), Jiubai (Allii Tuberosi Bulbus), and Danchidou (Fermented Soybean) in small amounts. Take warm.
This is caused by residual blood entering the meridians. Use Shenghua Tang (Transforming Stasis Decoction) added with Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), and Huainiuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix). (Refer to Harmonize 24)
The parturient was originally weak, and labor injuries depleted her Zhong Qi (Middle Jiao Qi). Although the Stomach accepts food, the Spleen's transportation function is weak. First, administer three to four doses of Shenghua Tang (Harmonize 24). After seven days, administer Jiashen Shenghua Tang (Supplement 58) to assist Spleen Qi, thereby preventing deficiency-related fullness. Alternatively, if constipation leads to the mistaken use of Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma); or excessive eating leads to overuse of Xiaodao (Digestion-promoting) herbs; or anger leads to the mistaken use of Qi-consuming drugs; or indulgence in cold drinks causes Eluo (Lochia) to coagulate and stagnate, leading to distension, one must examine the cause and treat accordingly with tonifying Qi, strengthening the Spleen, or warming the Stomach and promoting Blood circulation.
This is caused by incomplete expulsion of Eluo (Lochia). Or, due to postpartum Qi and Blood deficiency, Wind-Cold invades, combats the Zang-Fu organs, and knots with Qi and Blood, forming masses. Do not lightly use Qi-dispersing and Blood-moving herbs.
If caused by Wind-Cold combing with Blood, use Shenghua Tang (Harmonize 24) added with Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), three fen, ground and taken as a suspension.
If caused by Cold-Damp invading due to deficiency, use Shenghua Tang added with Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), and Chaojiang (Stir-fried Ginger Rhizome).
If after half a month the mass does not dissipate, or resembles a carbuncle protruding more than one cun, accompanied by fever and reduced appetite, use Shenghua Tang added with Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) and Pengzhu Tan (Carbonized Curcumae Radix), employing both attacking and tonifying treatments. (Refer to Harmonize 24)
Small nodules formed within the muscles and joints are due to Blood deficiency causing dry sinews and spasmodic knotting. This results from the excessive use of Blood-moving and Blood-breaking herbs to eliminate masses, leading to Blood failing to nourish the sinews and the sinews failing to relax. It is appropriate to nourish Water to moisten Liver Blood and nourish the Spleen to transport Middle Qi. Treat with modified Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction) (Supplement 5) and Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction) (Supplement 19).
