Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 8 liang), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, 4 liang), Xingren (Prunus Armeniaca Seed, 2 liang). Made into pills using rice bran paste.
Eyelid swelling and redness of the eyes, fever, headache, absence of sweating, and thirst indicate that wind-cold pathogenic factors failed to be released via sweating from the exterior, and the pathogenic factors have transmitted into the stomach and intestines. Without these three herbs, which are light in nature but heavy in efficacy, working together synergistically, internal unblocking and external reaching cannot be achieved.
The Classics state: "Diseases have interior and exterior locations; treatments have degrees of severity." It also states: "Diseases have near and far positions; prescriptions have large and small sizes. For near conditions, use odd-numbered ingredient formulas and reduce the dosage." This refers to such cases.
Poem says: Gypsum is high and pure; Ephedra is solid yet hollow within; Apricot seed embodies benevolence; These three friends are my teachers.
Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma).
This is a formula for releasing the exterior and promoting circulation, specifically used in this category to treat severe swelling of the head and eyes. Severe swelling arises from dampness;
when occurring in the head and eyes, it combines with wind. The Classics state: "Excess at the upper part indicates wind." Essentially, without wind, dampness cannot ascend to the high peaks and clear yang regions. In this formula, Qianghuo, Fangfeng, Cangzhu, Xixin, Chuanxiong, and Baizhi are all acrid-dispersing substances that can disperse wind and also eliminate dampness, as stated: "Acrid herbs can disperse wind, and wind herbs can overcome dampness." Huangqin, Shengdihuang, and raw Gancao address the internal heat generated by the struggle between wind and dampness, providing cooling and calming effects to harmonize Ying and Wei (nutritive and defensive qi). However, for individuals with yin deficiency or weak qi, even if they present with the aforementioned symptoms, one should seek formulas within the tonifying category. Using eight out of the nine ingredients here would be inappropriate, rendering Qianghuo ineffective.
Poem says: Shengdihuang resembles Huangqin; Cangzhu is whiter than Baizhi; Above Gancao are Xixin and Fangfeng; Chuanxiong and Qianghuo combined are unparalleled.
Remove Cangzhu and Shengdihuang from the previous formula; add Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus), and Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma).
This formula treats headache and ocular damage caused by wind-heat attacking upward.
The vital qi of the universe stirs in the void and arranges itself in the Four Seas, termed Wind. When the body's yang qi gathers in the head, due to resonance with similar pathogens, the pathogenic factor becomes substantial, causing manic pain. When it affects the eyes, it is called Wind Transformation. Rationally, one should use wind herbs like Qianghuo and Fangfeng to raise yang qi and expel pathogenic factors, adhering to the principle that "only wind can reach the highest peaks." The necessity of using Huangqin and Huanglian lies in the fact that wind movement generates fire; these two bitter-cold herbs descend fire, and when fire descends, wind subsides, naturally eliminating disease from the clear and empty upper regions, hence the name.
Poem says: Reduce Cangzhu and Dihuang from the Nine-Ingredient Formula; add Lian, Bo, Ju, and Can; Named Kongqing San, it similarly disperses yang pathogenic factors.
