(To be made into pills with wine and honey. Start with a small dose and increase gradually; stop immediately when rapid bowel evacuation occurs.)
Kansui Root (Radix Kansui), Great Euphorbia Root (Radix Euphorbiae Pekinensis), Genkwa Flower (Flos Genkwa) (each 1.5 liang), White Morning Glory Seed (Semen Pharbitidis), Rhubarb (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) (1 liang), Calomelas (Calomelas).
Numbness and paralysis of the limbs, pain that wanders and shifts, or abdominal swelling and fullness accompanied by vomiting and regurgitation, are caused by the accumulation of phlegm-fluids and stagnant heat, leading to congestion and obstruction of Qi and Blood, preventing their free circulation. Using mild formulas for regulation often yields no effect even after years. Therefore, gathering these six harsh and potent substances to purge the accumulation is a master technique of Zhu Danxi in treating fire syndromes. However, naming it "San Hua Shen Wan" (Three Flowers Divine Pill), one fears modern people lack the fortune of ancients. In Fujian, where He Jian's school uses heavy medications, even robust individuals dare not risk taking even one or two doses; how could divine protection be expected? Zhu Danxi added Phellodendron Bark (Cortex Phellodendri) and named it Xiao Wei Dan (Small Stomach Pill), annotating: "Xiao" means to eliminate. One only worries about eliminating too much of the body's essence. Furthermore, formulas like Zhang Hezi's Mugong Xiangling Wan (Musk and Bitter Orange Pill), ostensibly for resolving stagnation, actually extend the foot (a metaphor for damaging righteous Qi); once extended, it cannot bend again, so its formula is not recorded here.
To the above formula, add Green Tangerine Peel (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), Tangerine Peel (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), and Costus Root (Radix Aucklandoniae) (each 1 liang), made into pills with wine and honey.
Swelling and fullness of the face and eyes, followed by gradual general bodily edema, indicates a condition of "double excess" (excess pathogen and strong constitution); this formula is indicated.
The method of "Unblocking" removes obstruction; for achieving unblocking and promoting fluid metabolism, nothing surpasses the preceding formula. The "Acrid" flavor moves stagnation; to accelerate this movement, additional ingredients are required. After swallowing with wine, water and Qi circulate freely throughout the upper and lower, left and right, hence the name Zhou Che (Boat and Chariot).
Poem reads: Genkwa Flower, Great Euphorbia Root, and Kansui Root together; Ten Jujube Decoction (Shi Zao Tang) must be used for efficacy; Add Morning Glory Seed, Rhubarb, and Calomelas, the name San Hua Shen Wan deserves contemplation; Further add Costus Root, Green Tangerine Peel, and Tangerine Peel, Zhou Che pill chases away disease swiftly or slowly.
Asparagus Root (Radix Asparagi), Ophiopogon Tuber (Tuber Ophiopogonis), Coptis Rhizome (Rhizoma Coptidis), Scutellaria Root (Radix Scutellariae), Akebia Stem (Caulis Aristolochiae), Plantago Seed (Semen Plantaginis), Achyranthes Root (Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae), Safflower (Flos Carthami), Broom Cypress Twig (Ramulus Cytisi), Arnebia Root (Radix Lithospermi), Typha Pollen (Pollen Typhae), Moutan Cortex (Cortex Moutan), Sophora Flower (Flos Sophorae), Rehmannia Root (Radix Rehmanniae), Licorice Root Tip (Radix Glycyrrhizae cum Melle).
Blood stasis flooding the eye (Yuxue Guan Jing); this formula is indicated.
Blood circulates following Qi, reaching every part of the body. What is invisible is termed "Stasis"; when Fire Evil ascends counterflow and manifests visibly externally without dissipating, it is termed "Flooding the Eye." Therefore, Asparagus Root, Ophiopogon Tuber, Coptis Rhizome, Scutellaria Root, Plantago Seed, Achyranthes Root, Akebia Stem, and Licorice Root are used to clear toxicity; once toxicity is cleared, Qi becomes regulated. Safflower, Broom Cypress Twig, Arnebia Root, Typha Pollen, Sophora Flower, Rehmannia Root, and Moutan Cortex are used to drive out blood stasis; once stasis is driven out, blood vessels relax, Qi and Blood circulate uniformly, and the eye returns to calm as before. However, for patients with deficiency constitutions, dosages must be adjusted according to their condition; do not adhere rigidly.
Poem reads: Asparagus Root and Ophiopogon Tuber, Broom Cypress Twig, Sophora Flower, and Rehmannia Root; Moutan Cortex, Arnebia Root, and Safflower gather; Achyranthes Root, Plantago Seed, Akebia Stem, Licorice, Typha Pollen, and regional herbs;恰好 (Just right) Lonicera and Scutellaria open the medicine market.
