Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Xiong), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng), Poria (Fuling) (each 1.5 qian); Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Ganjiang), Cinnamomi Cortex (Rougui), Pinelliae Tuber (Banxia), Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu), Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Nongpu/Pohu), Paeoniae Radix (Shaoyao), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) (each 1 qian); Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Jupi), Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhiqiao) (each 6 fen).
This formula can treat cold accumulation, food accumulation, qi stagnation, blood stasis, and phlegm accumulation, hence named Wuji San (Five Accumulations Powder). Investigating its meaning, Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) and Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) are specialized in releasing the exterior; Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) and Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix) harmonize the interior with virtue; Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) and Nongpu (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) level the excess dampness in the stomach; Jupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) and Zhiqiao (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) vent the hidden accumulation in the membrane source (Mo Yuan); Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex), along with Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) and Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), enter the blood level to dispel cold and dampness; Banxia (Pinelliae Tuber), Ling (Poria), and Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) drive away floating fluid; furthermore, they clear stubborn phlegm. It is a formula that generally regulates yin and yang, exterior and interior. For external contraction of wind-cold and internal injury from raw/cold foods, resulting in fever, anhidrosis, headache, and sudden onset of eye redness and swelling, this formula is also accurate and effective. For individuals with constitutionally deficient yuan qi (primal qi), remove Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), and Zhiqiao (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), and add Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma). If there is cold limbs and spontaneous sweating, add Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) and Sheng Huangqi (Astragali Radix).
Poem says: Wuji combines Zhi, Ju, Chen, and Qiao shells; Baizhi, Xiong, Jiang, Gui, Cang, and Bu [Zhu]; Mahuang, Banxia, Cai [Ling], Gui; remove Cao and Geng, look to Shaoyao.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Rehmanniae Radix (Dihuang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Valerianae Jatamansi Rhizoma (Gujingcao - *Note: Usually refers to Euphrasiae Herba or similar in ophthalmology contexts, but literal translation used*), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), Crataegi Fructus (Shanzha Rou), Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma (Weirui Ren), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Akebiae Caulis (Mutong), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng), Peucedani Radix (Qianhu), Forsythiae Fructum (Lianqiao), Arnebiae Radix et Rhizoma (Zicao Rong), Ophiopogonis Tuber (Maimendong), Arctii Fructus (Dali Zi, i.e., Niubangzi).
This is a formula that clears toxicity, invigorates blood, and combines attacking and tonifying methods. In cases where chickenpox/smallpox is accompanied by sudden eye redness and swelling, it is known that evil affects the Wind-Wood (Liver). However, if the rash color is pale and the pus is empty, it indicates severe deficiency of qi and blood, yet one dares not tonify abruptly. Because tonification may cause the rash to erupt too freely or improperly, ultimately harming the eyes. Eye redness, pain, and nebula formation occur with many variations. One still cannot simply use cold-natured herbs to disperse, as cold dispersion would harm the rash's vitality. The physician finds it tricky and should not claim incompetence. In the above formula, Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) nourish and benefit the zhen yuan (true primal qi). When zhen yuan is sufficient, Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), and Dali Zi (Arctii Fructus) can be used for their purgative/clearing actions. Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Gujingcao (Valerianae Jatamansi Rhizoma/Euphrasiae Herba), Shanzha (Crataegi Fructus), Ruiren (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma), and Zicao (Arnebiae Radix et Rhizoma) harmonize ying (nutritive) and wei (defensive) qi. When ying and wei are harmonized, Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), and Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructum) can pacify the delicate lung heat. Thus, although symptoms differ, the medicinal combination follows the principle of "Tong Qi" (Harmonious Agreement), mutually non-interfering. Named Tianbao Caiwei Tang (Heavenly Protection and Gathering Ferns Decoction), it borrows the phrase to imply that auspicious people receive heavenly protection, ensuring abundant blessings, so that the medicines used are all suitable, and diseases do not fail to recover. It fully expresses the sentiment, respectfully managing the medical task, so as not to forget care when illness arises. People say metal (lung/autumn) is unfavorable, and treatment is poor; doctors lack constancy and skill. The creator of this formula is likely a master who thinks comprehensively, committing few errors and regrets. Yu the Great also had a soup name on his cast bronze vessels, but the herb names are vastly different, making the rationale unclear. Moreover, regardless of whether the disease course is favorable or unfavorable, always instructing patients to decoct and take according to the formula is particularly inexplicable.
Poem says: Tianbao Caiwei Tang, Lianqiao, Huangqin, Huanglian, Dihuang; Danggui, Renshen, Dali Zi; Gancao, Jiegeng, Shaoyao, Mutong form the base; Zicao adds fresh color, Ruiren has dense fragrance; Qianhu, Yun [Mu Tong?], Gu [Jingcao], Mai [Men Dong], properties are cool like Zha [Shanzha].
Attached Formula: Zhi, Jiegeng, Erchen [San] drugs; Sheng, Jiu, You [Xiong], Huo [Xiang]; Chai, Ge, Qian Yin [Han], Han; Qiang, Cang, Du, Jin [Yi], Pu [Huo].
