Huaihua (Blossom of Sophora japonica), Puhuang (Pollen Typhae), Danpi (Cortex Moutan), Danshen (Radix Salviae miltiorrhizae), Honghua (Flos Carthami tinctorii), Sumu (Lignum Sappan), Zicao (Radix Arnebiae seu Lithospermi) (each 1 liang), Ruxiang (Resin Olibanum), Moyao (Resin Myrrha), Xuexie (Sanguis Draconis), Zhusha (Cinnabaris), Lingsha (Calx Cinnabaris) (each 5 qian).
For blood stasis obstructing the eye, where red meridians traverse the eyeball causing a blood obstruction (blood cataract), and eyelid flesh enveloping the pupil, this formula is indicated.
Blood is generated by the Heart, stored in the Liver, and ascends to the visual system; thus, eyelid swelling and coarse, red vessels occur. Pain indicates excess heat, while itching indicates wind deficiency. A wiry and rapid pulse suggests excessive heat generating wind. If there is abundant ocular discharge and the white of the eye (sclera/white wheel) is red or purple, this indicates Heart Fire overcoming Lung Metal. Redness and ulceration of both eyelids with intense itching indicate Wind Wood insulting Spleen Earth; treatment should address the condition holistically. Medicines regulating the Blood aspect should both disperse and expel stasis, while simultaneously calming and harmonizing. Consequently, the pathogenic blood influence will subside, and the obstructive vessels will gradually disappear. Alternatively, combined with external treatments such as cauterization, over time the eye's luster will shine brightly, with clear distinction between black and white, hence the name "Fenzhu" [Dividing Pearls].
Poem: Since ancient times, blood vessels have traversed the pearl of the eye,
Myrrh, Cinnabar, and Calx strive diligently to remove them.
Arnezia, Typha pollen, Sophora blossom, Sappan wood, and Olibanum,
Salvia root and Moutan bark are used similarly.
When evil pathogens invade the muscle layer, they must be urgently expelled without delay; if neglected for a long time, the pathogens will inevitably penetrate deeply. Huisan Fang [Gathering-Scattering Formula]:
Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae baicalensis), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis macrocephalae), Jingjie (Herba Schizonepetae), Zhike (Fructus Aurantii immaturus), Xiong [Chuanxiong] (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis), Baizhi (Radix Angelicae dahuricae), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae uralensis), Qianghuo (Rhizoma Notopterygii), Qianhu (Radix Peucedani), Duhuo (Radix Angelicae pubescentis), Bohe (Herba Menthae haplocalycis), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae).
This formula is indicated when Wind-Heat cannot be controlled.
Wind represents a deficiency manifestation initially. If wind persists for a long time without dispersing, it will inevitably transform into heat, making the disease an excess pattern. Compounded by external pathogens, heat reverts to generate wind, resulting in headache, nasal congestion, swollen eyes, excessive tearing, heaviness at the vertex of the head, and tight pain in the brow bones. Failure to take medicine or taking incorrect medicines further damages the Spleen and Stomach. The wind will not cease, and the heat will become uncontrollable, leading to symptoms such as increased discharge, eye obstructions (cataracts/pseudocorneal opacities), and eyelid itching and ulceration. Therefore, Baizhu, Zhike, Huangqin, Gancao, and Jiegeng are used to regulate the Earth (Spleen), enabling Lung Metal to function properly, thereby sufficing to pacify Wood (Liver). Qianghuo, Duhuo, Chaihu, and Qianhu are used to scatter wind, preventing Heart Fire from becoming blazing and steaming upwards. It is named "Shengfeng" [Overcoming Wind] because the wind nature is vigorous and tough; administering this decoction overcomes the wind.
Poem: Bupleurum and Peucedanum combined with Notopterygium and Angelica pubescens,
Chuanxiong, Angelica dahurica, Schizonepeta, Saposhnikovia, and Mint,
