Gastrodiae Rhizoma (prepared with ginger juice), Astragali Radix, Ginseng Radix, Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, Poria, Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, Pinelliae Rhizoma, Maltum Fermentatum, Hordei Fructus Germinatus, Phellodendri Cortex (stir-fried with salt water and wine), Zingiberis Rhizoma, Alismatis Rhizoma, Atractylodis Rhizoma.
Individuals with excessive phlegm-dampness and irregular diet often suffer from headache, vertigo, darkening of the eyelids, nausea, shortness of breath, mental confusion, heaviness of the body, fatigue, cold limbs, and a pulse that is large, slow, or deep. These symptoms are markedly different from facial paralysis (facial deviation caused by wind pathogen), yet the underlying pathological mechanism is similar. Therefore, for chills caused by phlegm-jue (syncope due to phlegm obstruction), which results from dampness prevailing leading to cold, only Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium and Pinelliae Rhizoma can treat it. For darkening of vision and vertigo, caused by internal deficiency-wind, only Zingiberis Rhizoma and Gastrodiae Rhizoma can eliminate it. Ginseng Radix and Astragali Radix tonify qi and secure the exterior, and can also stop spontaneous sweating caused by heat steaming. Atractylodis Rhizoma (both varieties), Maltum Fermentatum, and Hordei Fructus Germinatum tonify the middle jiao and digest food, while also clearing stagnant qi in the spleen and stomach. Alismatis Rhizoma and Poria are used because if dampness is not immediately resolved, guiding it out through urination serves as a strategic retreat to prevent dampness from lingering. Phellodendri Cortex is used because when cold is overcome by yin pathogens, there is a fear that water qi may transform into fire (damp-heat interaction), thus serving as a preventive measure. Although the ingredients of this formula are ordinary, its efficacy is rapid; those who use it skillfully will find it invariably effective.
Poem: Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), and Maiya (Hordei Fructus Germinatum) have sprouted; Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) is nearly ready; it is best to indulge together with Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) and Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium); gather Renshen (Ginseng Radix) and Fuling (Poria) near the banks of Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma).
Menthae Haplocalycis Herba, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Gastrodiae Rhizoma, Schizonepetae Spica, Saposhnikoviae Radix, Chrysanthemi Flos, Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Forsythiae Fructus, Lycii Fructus, Celosiae Semen, Angelicae Dahuricae Radix, Primulae Flos.
When earth qi fails to control wood qi, deficiency-wind arises internally, manifesting as itchy and tearing eyes. When earth qi overcomes wood qi, damp-heat overflows upward, manifesting as redness and ulceration of the eyelids. Schizonepetae Spica, Angelicae Dahuricae Radix, Saposhnikoviae Radix, Menthae Haplocalycis Herba, and Chrysanthemi Flos are used to disperse exterior pathogens. Angelicae Sinensis Radix and Lycii Fructus are used to harmonize the Liver; when the Liver is balanced, deficiency-wind subsides, and itching and tearing cease. Gastrodiae Rhizoma, Celosiae Semen, and Forsythiae Fructus clear damp-heat; assisted by Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma and Primulae Flos, they also regulate the Spleen; when the Spleen is treated, the skin and muscles become firm, and redness and ulceration heal. This formula is the primary treatment for any ulceration or suppuration of the "flesh wheel" (eyelids) that persists without healing over time.
Poem: Qiju Yin (Lycium and Chrysanthemum Decoction) gathers Gastrodiae Rhizoma, Celosiae Semen, Schizonepetae Spica, Menthae Haplocalycis Herba, and Primulae Flos; combined with Saposhnikoviae Radix, Forsythiae Fructus, Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Angelicae Dahuricae Radica, and refined Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, the redness and ulceration caused by wind-heat traversing the skin will recover.
