The right side is dominated by Qi, the left by Wind; when Wind and Qi combine, they transform into Fire and rush upward. It can be diagnosed as a dangerous and urgent condition on one side, let alone when both left and right sides attack each other. When attacking outward, the Qingjing (cornea) may become concave or convex; when attacking inward, the Shen (spirit/vision) scatters and the pupil loses its luster.
If one can recognize the diseases of the Six Channels and the seven types of head wind, treating according to the formula will not be without merit.
In this syndrome, if the left side of the head hurts but the right does not, it is called Left Biased Wind; if the right side hurts but the left does not, it is called Right Biased Wind. Danxi said: Head wind is caused by Phlegm, Heat, Wind, and Blood. On the left, it mostly belongs to Wind and Blood; on the right, it mostly belongs to Phlegm and Heat. People only suffer from headaches and completely neglect their eyes. Often, an attack on the left damages the left eye, and an attack on the right damages the right eye. If Blood deficiency generates Wind, excessive Wind generates Heat, excessive Heat generates Phlegm, and Phlegm reverses to obstruct Qi, with Wind and Phlegm combining, Blood is consumed from within. Consumption leads to deficiency, Cold, and pain. If Wind does not subside, it must damage the left first and then counter-attack the right, or damage the right first and then counter-attack the left, resulting in damage to both eyes. Furthermore, verify that pain starting internally and ending externally causes slower harm; pain starting externally and ending internally causes rapid harm; pain entering from Baihui (GV20), Shangxing (GV23), or Cuanzhu (BL2) causes severe harm. Externally presenting with redness, swelling, pain, and tearing indicates an External Syndrome; internally presenting with dizziness, confusion, and visual hallucinations indicates an Internal Syndrome. Once formed, these syndromes are often incurable. The harm caused by Wind is extremely cruel and toxic! Treatment method: Regardless of left or right, first use moxa and green onion to warm the head, and stir-fried rice and salt to warm the Taiyang acupoints. Simultaneously, prepare Shenying San (Divine Response Powder) and sip it slowly. Wait until the condition subsides slightly, then diagnose the pulse according to the syndrome. For Left Biased Wind, if the pulse is floating, rapid, and forceful, accompanied by vexation, bitter taste, red and wildly painful eyes, hot tears like soup, and difficulty in urination and defecation, use Zhuke Yin (Guest-Expelling Decoction) and Daochi Ban Ge Tang (Half-and-Half Decoction for Guiding Out Redness). If there is nebula, take Xieqing Wan (Liver-Clearing Pill) concurrently. For Right Biased Wind, if the pulse is similar to the left but more full and large, with red and swollen eyes, excessive discharge, and constipation in urination and defecation, use Tongqi Lizhong Wan (Qi-Unblocking Middle-Promoting Pill), Liangge San (Cooling Diaphragm Powder), or Qingwei San (Stomach-Clearing Powder). If there is Phlegm, Qingqi Huatan Wan (Qi-Clearing Phlegm-Transforming Pill) is also acceptable. Following this principle, Jueyin Eye damage may be avoided. If not damaged, selecting formulas based on the disease can cure five or six out of ten cases.
In the fifth month, Yin Qi advances, and Wind Evil hides in the Ren Mai (Conception Vessel); in the Zi month, Yang Qi advances, and Wind Evil hides in the Du Mai (Governor Vessel). Hiding in Ren Mai causes eyebrow bone pain; hiding in Du Mai causes occipital bone pain. As Du and Ren alternate transmission, the whole head feels as if struck or touched.
This syndrome refers to pain in the forehead, temples, eyebrow ridge, and posterior vertex/occipital bone. When Yin Evil manifests, it occurs more often during months governed by the Six Yang channels. This is because True Yin is insufficient, allowing Wind-Heat to flare upward. If there is old Phlegm in the chest, this is caused by Fire, where excessive Heat generates Wind. When Yang Evil manifests, it occurs more often during months governed by the Six Yin channels. This is because True Yang is insufficient, allowing Cold-Dampness to attack internally. If tinnitus and vertigo occur, this is caused by rebellious Phlegm, where Fire combines with Water transformation. "Du and Ren" refer to the front and back divisions of the human body, not the baseless theory of women embracing Yang and bearing Yin, or men embracing Yin and bearing Yang; rather, it refers to the Du Mai and Ren Mai among the Eight Extraordinary Vessels. There is no distinction between internal and external in this syndrome; the general approach is to nourish Ying (Nutritive Qi) and support Wei (Defensive Qi), descend Fire, and dissipate Phlegm, so that Cold is warmed, Dampness is dried, and Heat is cooled, eliminating pain as easily as removing a cover. Those with Yuan (Primordial) deficiency, Phlegm-Fire, or severe anger are prone to this. Ignoring it without treatment, or having it recur after temporary cure, will inevitably lead to blindness.
