The eyes feel extremely shy and uncomfortable when opened; bowing the head and lowering the eyebrows. Facing the sun is indeed like this, and it also occurs near a stove. Differentiate among the Heart, Liver, and Spleen; deduce within Wind, Fire, and Blood. Even if the disease recedes, it remains so; this is due to the deficiency of Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) Qi.
When these eyes are in bright places, they hurt, feel dry and astringent, fear light, avoid looking, and cannot open. Whenever a disease first takes hold with significant momentum, it is always like this. There are often cases where, even on moonlit nights without lamps or at sunset with doors and windows closed, one still dares not look slightly. The pathology originates in the Hand Shaoyin (Heart) Meridian, Foot Taiyin (Spleen) Meridian, and Foot Jueyin (Liver) Meridian. In summary, it is merely excessive Qi and hot Blood, with pathogenic factors in the Yang aspect. Excessive Yang insults Yin; relief comes with coolness. It is like noon in summer: people recoil upon seeing it, and if one approaches a fire stove, who can endure its scorching heat? Therefore, one feels refreshed in dark, empty spaces. However, there is another perspective: sudden onset with photophobia indicates excess (Shi), while photophobia with chronic illness indicates deficiency (Xu). If it is painless and tearless, it is due to Blood deficiency. Blood deficiency leads to reduced Gallbladder juice and weak Kidney Qi. This is what is meant by the collapse of True Yuan (Primordial Qi); the eyes prefer to droop and close, how can they circulate essence and brilliance to resist sunlight? Treatment methods: for acute conditions, use Yi Qing Wan (Suppress Green Pill); for chronic conditions, use Zi Yin Di Huang Wan (Nourish Yin Rehmannia Pill). For painless and tearless symptoms, use Ping Qi He Zhong Tang (Calm Qi and Harmonize Middle Decoction). If other symptoms coexist, one must examine the pulse and symptoms carefully before prescribing. Even if immediate efficacy is not achieved, no one will privately criticize behind one's back.
Like waves, like flowers, observing the self-nature; both dry and astringent, causing helpless sorrow. All because Yin is depleted and cannot match Yang; Spirit is exhausted, essence fluids are damaged, leading to fear of obstacles forming in the pupil.
The opening and closing of these eyes are never natural, and vision is dim and obscure. This is mostly caused by over-straining the eyes and excessive worry, indulging in alcohol and lust, where the Five Fires (internal pathological heat) boil and damage Shen Water (tears/ocular fluids). It is like sitting for a long time burning mosquito coils on a summer night, or closing eyes during sleep; suddenly, severe astringency and pain occur, relieved only by tears, showing the cause is insufficient water and heat scorching. If one does not practice caution and preservation, it will inevitably become withered and emaciated. Otherwise, the luster will not be moist, fine red meridians will wind around, producing discharge and tears, bringing no peace for life. Treatment should employ Zhu Jing Wan (Reside in Scenery Pill) and Huan Shao Dan (Restore Youth Elixir) to nourish sources and cultivate roots; Ren Shen Gu Ben Wan (Ginseng Solidify Root Pill) and Jin Shui Liu Jun Jian (Metal-Water Six Gentlemen Decoction) to slightly suppress pathogens. When the root is established, clear Qi naturally harmonizes; when pathogens are removed, the source transforms accordingly. If physicians mistake it for a Fire syndrome and recklessly apply purgative and dispersing methods, complications such as tightening and deviation of the eyelids may arise.
Five out of ten cases of this eye disease are similar. Is it because meat food is palatable? Or is it because captivating objects shift emotions? One must strictly restrain oneself to preserve the Divine Light. Some say: "If you see wine and women and stay away from them, what use are your eyes?" This can be said as being good at playful banter, but not doing cruel deeds.
