Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), Shanglu (Phytolaccae Radix), Binglang (Arecae Semen), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), HuaJiaomu (Zanthoxyli Fructus Seed), Dafupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), Fulingpi (Poria Cum Ligno Cortex), Chixiaodou (Phaseoli Radiatus Semen), with Jiangpi (Zingiberis Recens Cortex) added as an adjunct during decoction.
For generalized edema of the whole body, panting and shouting, irritability and thirst, and constipation of both stool and urine, this formula is indicated.
When there is pain throughout the body on the exterior, and internally panting, thirst, and constipation, accompanied by red and painful eyes, this indicates that both the interior and exterior, upper and lower parts are affected. It is essential to clarify the pathological trend for recovery. Qianghuo and Qinjiao are herbs that release the exterior.
Water pathogenic factors residing in the exterior are expelled through sweat when stimulated. Zexie, Dafupi, and Fulingpi are herbs that promote diuresis and leach out dampness. Water pathogenic factors residing in the interior are expelled through urination when stimulated. When water toxicity is congested and blocked, Shanglu and Binglang are used to purge it. When water qi steams and humidifies, HuaJiaomu and Chixiaodou are used to drain water. Such a legislative principle is not akin to the logic of Yu the Great channeling rivers and dredging canals? Naming the formula thus is not an exaggeration.
Poem states: In Shuzao Yin, Arecae Semen combines with Phytolaccae Radix; Poria Cum Ligno Cortex, Ginger Peel, and Zanthoxyli Fructus Seed; Phaseoli Radiatus Semen, Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, and Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix; why worry that water dampness will not be drained rapidly?
Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex).
This formula does not treat Summerheat, but rather treats the Spleen and Stomach injured during summer days. The Spleen and Stomach prefer dryness and dislike dampness, prefer warmth and dislike cold. Although it is midsummer, if excessive drinking or consumption of cold foods leads to excessive cold-dampness, then Yin and Yang mutually reverse, inevitably leading to Huoluan (Cholera-like syndrome) with vomiting and diarrhea. Therefore, Ganjiang and Rougui's pungent-warm nature is used to accord with their nature; Gancao and Xingren's warm-moistening nature is used to harmonize Qi, hence named "Da Shun" (Great Harmony/Smoothness).
Poem states: Named Da Shun San, the medicine consists of only four ingredients. What are these four? Armeniacae Semen Amarum, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Zingiberis Rhizoma, and Cinnamomi Cortex.
Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) plus Huashi (Talcum), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Hanshuishi (Calcitum). Dosages should still be carefully considered; making it into a powder is advisable.
Excessive drinking in summer injures the Taiyang Channel (Solar Meridian), causing difficult urination, with Damp-Heat attacking upward to the eyes. Urgently use the Three Stones (Huashi, Shigao, Hanshuishi) to clear Heat, and Wuling San to promote diuresis. Liu Hejian's formula is indeed truly like Sweet Dew. Zhang Zihe added Renshen (Ginseng Radix) and Gancao because of the deficient pulse to tonify Qi. Added Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) and Gange (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) to transform dampness and remove irritability.
Poem states: Calcitum and Talcum flow smoothly, Polyporus and Atractylodes Macrocephalae Rhizoma moistened by Gypsum Fibrosum and moisture; Cinnamon Twig and Poria boiled with fire, Sweet Dew clears heat and fever.
