Fanhong (Processed Alum): Select large, transparent crystals of Qingfan (Green Vitriol), refine one tael; select Nixiao (Saltpeter) with long crystal sprouts, take five qian; Shijian (Soda Ash) two qian; Fansha (Arsenic Sulfide) one qian. It is authentic if it is bright white and melts upon exposure to wind.
The above formula treats all conditions where Wind-Heat is uncontrolled, leading to Blood obstruction and red vessels in the eye that persist for a long time without healing. This is because Fanhong is sour to restrain Wind and astringent to remove adhering pathogens; Yaxiao (Niter/Mirabilite) is salty to enter the Blood level and cold to overcome Heat. Assisted by Shijian to wash away turbidity, and assisted by Fansha to resolve stasis. The pill is named Jiangxue (Crimson Snow), truly a subtle preparation among immortal medicines.
Lvfan (Green Vitriol), also known as Shidan (Stone Gallbladder), five qian; Tonglv (Malachite) two qian; Wenhai (Clam Shell) three qian; Wumei meat (Dark Plum Meat) and Heizao meat (Black Date Meat) each one tael. All ingredients are mixed with White Honey, steamed until extremely soft and rotten, pounded and melted into pills the size of Ecballium elaterium seeds, and stored in porcelain jars. For each use, take half a cup of spring water, steam over rice to extract the aroma, and frequently wash the eyelid margins. Do not wipe after washing; let it dry naturally. Then heat and wash again as before. After one pill is exhausted, steam another new one, continuing until the disease is cured. Alternatively, add Chuan Huajiao Pi (Sichuan Pepper Skin), Yunlian Mo (Coptis Powder), Zhangnao (Borneol), and Bohe Ye (Mint Leaf) each one qian, which remains excellent.
Ocular diseases present with various complications, all of which can be completely eradicated. Weichi Lan (Marginal Blepharitis) is merely a minor skin disease of border regions, yet why does it lack an effective treatment method? Probably because the disease has persisted for too long, spreading widely and becoming difficult to manage. Moreover, if treatment does not yield rapid results, who would willingly undergo thorough attacking and tonifying therapies? Thus, symptoms temporarily disappear only to return, and over years, the condition worsens rather than improves. Therefore, laypeople compare such stubborn eye diseases to those with unchanging hearts, calling them "Lanxian Feng" (Rotting Margin Wind), describing eyes that are constantly red and painful.
In the above formula, Shidan, Tonglv, Wumei, and Wenhai are extremely sour and astringent, capable of removing Dampness and restraining Wind; Zao (Dates), Honey, Huanglian (Coptis), Jiaojiao (Pepper), Bohe (Mint), and Zhangnao (Borneol) possess sweet and bitter flavors, capable of clearing Heat and moistening Dryness. Combined with Yuanshuang (likely referring to the refined essence or specific component mentioned in context), interacting and harmonizing, the root of the disease will naturally be completely eliminated, and vitality will become clear and bright. Hence, it is named Zhaorong (Radiant Beauty). Any sores, rashes, redness, itching, and pain that persist for a long time must involve parasites, mostly caused by Wind-Damp-Heat. If proper nourishment and care are neglected, and medicinal potency is insufficient, these become chronic ailments. This formula's therapeutic methods are comprehensive; perhaps it can sharpen against residual Wind and correct the folk proverb.
