[Diagram of the Five Movements (Wu Yun)]
In years of Ding and Ren, the Wood Movement prevails. The climate is both cold and dry; it is appropriate to use harmonizing formulas to balance it.
In years of Wu and Gui, the Fire Movement prevails. It is suitable for cold methods and unsuitable for heat; it is appropriate to use cooling formulas to resolve it.
In years of Jia and Ji, the Earth Movement prevails. It favors warmth and dislikes cold; it is appropriate to use warming formulas to assist it.
In years of Yi and Geng, the Metal Movement prevails. It favors clarity and dislikes dryness; it is appropriate to use neutral/clearing formulas to purify it.
In years of Bing and Xin, the Water Movement prevails. It desires warmth, as cold causes stagnation; it is appropriate to use hot formulas to warm it.
[Diagram of the Six Qi (Liu Qi)]
The Si Tian (Ruling Qi of Heaven) governs the first half of the year.
The Zai Quan (Ruling Qi of Earth) governs the second half of the year.
In years of Zi, Wu, Mao, and You, Shao Yin Jun Huo (Minor Yin Sovereign Fire) and Yang Ming Zao Jin (Yangming Dry Metal) rule Si Tian and Zai Quan; treatment should favor clearing methods.
In years of Yin, Shen, Si, and Hai, Shao Yang Xiang Huo (Shaoyang Ministerial Fire) and Jue Yin Feng Mu (Jueyin Wind Wood) rule Si Tian and Zai Quan; treatment should favor cooling methods to harmonize.
In years of Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei, Tai Yin Shi Tu (Taiyin Damp Earth) and Tai Yang Han Shui (Taiyang Cold Water) rule Si Tian and Zai Quan; treatment should favor warming methods.
However, one must examine the disease and adjust treatment accordingly; one must not blindly use heat-inducing therapies.
