Ingredients: Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Honghua (Carthami Flos), Mahren (Semen Cannabis), Yuliren (Semen Pruni), Taoren (Semen Persicae) (each 5 qian); Jingjiesui (Herba Schizonepetae), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra) (each 3 qian).
Indications: Intestinal constipation accompanied by eye pain; this formula is indicated.
Analysis: Intestinal constipation resulting in hard, black stools is due to blood dryness. The mention of eye pain indicates that prolonged dryness has transformed into heat, and wind pathogen is about to stir. For dryness, moistening is required; Danggui, Dihuang, and the three types of seeds (Mahern, Yuliren, Taoren) are moistening agents. For heat, cooling is required; Dahuang and Honghua are cooling substances. A small amount of Jingjiesui and Chishao is added precisely to prevent the wind pathogen from becoming severe.
Poem states: The decoctions of Mengchong (Leech), Shizhi (Water Leech), Taoren, and Dahuang have different properties; treating according to syndrome should avoid using Didang Tang. Tongyou Wan uses Danggui and prepared Dihuang, still employing Taoren to moderate Dahuang, along with Mahren, Yuliren, Jingjiesui, and Chishao; combined due to compatible properties into pills. The efficacy of processed Dahuang alone is comparable; within the purgative action, Baiqianniu (Radix Stemonae) is also included.
[Zhaiji Wan]
Ingredients: Dahuang (8 liang), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Dayuandi (Dihuang, Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 3 liang); Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Ganqi (Resina Taxodi), Taoren (Semen Persicae), Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum) (each 2 liang); Qicao (Melandrya Larva), Mengchong (Hirudo), Shizhi (Whitmania Pigra), Bichong (Eupolyphaga Seu Steleophaga) (each 0.5 jin).
Indications: In advanced stages of the five kinds of consumptive diseases, with dried blood retained internally, causing skin roughness resembling fish scales and darkened vision; this formula is indicated.
Wu Hegao said: When turbid yin does not descend, clear yang cannot ascend; this is the way of heaven and earth. When petty persons do not withdraw, virtuous men cannot advance; this is the way of family and state. When dried blood is not expelled, new blood cannot be generated; this is the way of the human body. Ganqi, Taoren, Mengchong, Shizhi, Qicao, and Bichong are herbs that remove blood stasis. With Dahuang as the sovereign herb, they obey orders like generals. Huangqin, Shaoyao, and Dihuang extinguish the fire of a burning cart while preserving the water in a cup. Xingren and Gancao moisten scorched earth and nurture withered wood. Zhang Zhongjing was the master of medical formulas, possessing unique insight. Nowadays, when people encounter emaciation due to consumptive injury, if nourishing yin and clearing heat fails, they sit and wait for death. Alas! Is medicine limited to only this?
Poem states: Qicao transforms from decaying grass, Shizhi dwells in paddy fields; Bichong, Mengchong, Gan Di Huang, and Ganqi, combined with Dahuang, Huangqin, Shaoyao, Xingren, and Taoren, are made into honeyed pills according to method to treat zhaiji (consumptive disease).
[Gun Tan Wan]
Adjuvant: Decoct Zisuzi (Perillae Fructus), Baijiezi (Semen Sinapis Albae), and Laifuzi (Radix Raphani) to make a thick juice, mix with honey to form pills.
Ingredients: Dahuang (4 liang), Huangqin (2 liang), Mengshi (Calcareous Schist, boiled with Natrii Sulfas, levigated, 1 liang), Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum) (5 qian).
Indications: Excess heat and old phlegm manifesting as various bizarre symptoms; this formula is indicated.
Analysis: The excess nature of phlegm stems from qi stagnation; when qi moves, phlegm follows. Therefore, Chenxiang and the three seeds (Zisuzi, Baijiezi, Laifuzi) are used to direct qi downward. The aged nature of phlegm stems from fire; when fire is excessive, phlegm knots. Therefore, Mengshi and Erhuang (Dahuang and Huangqin) are used to purge fire.
Poem states: Gun Tan Wan consists of Dahuang, Huangqin, Jinmengshi (Gold Mengshi), and Hainan Chenxiang.
