Song on Dryness, Astringency, Blurred Vision: Dryness and astringency of the eyes with blurred vision stem from disorders of the Liver and Kidney. This is caused by excessive indulgence in alcohol and sexual activity, overexertion of the eyes, and excessive mental worry. The treatment should employ Siwu Wuzi Wan (Four Substances and Five Seeds Pill), which contains Qianqianzi (Plantaginis Semen), Fupenzi (Rubae Fructus), Gouqizi (Lycii Fructus), and Tusizi (Cuscutae Semen). The specific herbs include Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), and Difuzi (Kochiae Spica). Additionally, applying Wudan Gao (Five Gall Ointment) externally to the eyes yields good results.
[Note] "Dryness and astringency with blurred vision" refers to the sensation of dryness and astringency in the eyes, accompanied by blurred vision. This is a sign of damage to both the Liver and Kidney. Causes may include嗜酒 (indulgence in alcohol) and恣欲 (unrestrained sexual desire), or exhausting vision through overuse, or excessive mental speculation, all of which lead to this syndrome. It is appropriate to use Siwu Wuzi Wan to nourish Yin, tonify Water (Kidney essence), slightly suppress fire, and thereby cultivate the root.
Formula for Siwu Wuzi Wan:
Qianqianzi (steamed with wine), Fupenzi, Gouqizi, Tusizi (boiled in wine until soft), Danggui (washed with wine), Shudihuang, Chuanxiong, Baishao, Difuzi (all in equal proportions).
Grind the above into a fine powder, make pills using refined honey, sized like sophora seeds. Take two qian per dose, at any time, swallowed with salt water.
Wudan Gao (see formula at the end of the volume).
Song on White Eye Pain: Pain in the white part of the eye without obvious redness or swelling, accompanied by red filaments and crimson vessels, feeling gritty and painful. The etiology involves damp-heat in the Lung and Spleen combined with latent fire. One must distinguish the red vessels according to the three Yang meridians. Use Sangpi Tang (Morus Bark Decoction) containing Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Xuanyuan (Scrophulariae Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Xuanfuhua (Inulae Flos), Fuling (Poria), Sangbaipi (Mori Cortex), and Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix).
[Note] "White eye pain," commonly called "harmful white eye," presents with symptoms of no redness, no swelling, but with a gritty, painful sensation, often generating red filaments and crimson vessels. This is caused by damage to the collaterals of the Spleen and Lung, with damp-heat accumulation and latent fire in the Qi level rushing upward. One must observe the direction of the red filaments to distinguish the three Yang meridians: those descending from top to bottom belong to the Taiyang (Greater Yang) meridian, with Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) as the guiding herb; those ascending from bottom to top belong to the Yangming (Yang Brightness) meridian, with Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) as the guiding herb; those moving from outside to inside belong to the Shaoyang (Lesser Yang) meridian, with Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) as the guiding herb. It is appropriate to treat primarily with Sangbaipi Tang.
Formula for Sangbaipi Tang:
Zexie (8 fen), Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix, 8 fen), Huangqin (8 fen), Jiegeng (7 fen), Juhua (5 fen), Gancao (2.5 fen), Xuanfuhua (1 qian), Fuling (7 fen), Sangbaipi (7 fen), Maimendong (decored, 1 qian).
Grind the above into a coarse powder. Add two cups of water, decoct until one cup remains, remove the dregs, and take warm.
