Foreign bodies such as dust or filaments enter the eye, causing tearing, dryness and difficulty in opening the eyes, and pain in the eyeball. Initially, external treatment is appropriate; if it persists for a long time, nebula (corneal opacity) may develop. In such cases, Jiutiao San (Wine-Adjusted Powder) can be used, which contains Gancao (Licorice Root), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), Chongweizi (Eclipta Seed), Sangpiaoxiao (Mantis Egg-case), Chishao (Red Peony Root), Cangzhu (Atractylodes Rhizome), Juhua (Chrysanthemum Flower), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), Lianqiao (Forsythia Fruit), Mahuang (Ephedra Stem), Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome), and Dahuang (Rhubarb Root).
[Note] "Mi mu" (squinting due to foreign body) refers to wind-blown dust or filaments entering the eye. The symptoms include excessive tearing, a sensation of grittiness and difficulty in opening the eyes, and pain in the eyeball. At the onset, it is appropriate to evert the eyelid and use cotton-wrapped hairpin tips to remove the foreign body. If cloud-like nebula develops after a long period, Jiutiao San should be used for treatment.
Formula: Jiutiao San (Wine-Adjusted Powder)
Ingredients: Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Chongweizi (Fructus Ecliptae), Sangpiaoxiao (Ovum Mantidis), Chishao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), Cangzhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis), Juhua (Flos Chrysanthemi), Jiegeng (Radix Platycodi), Lianqiao (Fructus Forsythiae), Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae), Qianghuo (Rhizoma Notopterygii), Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) (each 1 liang).
Grind all ingredients into fine powder. Take 3 qian per dose, mixed with wine, at any time.
Clear vision at a distance but blurred vision up close indicates excess Yang qi damaging Yin jing (essence). Dizhi Wan (Dizhi Pill) should be used, containing Zhike (Aurantii Fructus), Juhua (Chrysanthemum Flower), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), and Tiandong (Asparagi Radix).
[Note] "Neng yuan qie jin" (able to see far but fearful of seeing near) means one can see distant objects clearly but sees nearby objects as blurred. This is due to excess Yang qi and deficiency of Yin jing, causing the visual brilliance (Guanghua) to scatter and fail to converge on near objects. It is appropriate to use Dizhi Wan to nourish Yin jing; long-term administration will heal the eyes.
Formula: Dizhi Wan (Dizhi Pill)
Ingredients: Zhike (pericarp removed), Juhua (each 3 liang); Shengdihuang (baked dry), Tiandong (heart removed, each 4 liang).
Grind all ingredients into fine powder. Mix with refined honey to form pills the size of tung tree seeds. Take 100 pills per dose, washed down with clear tea after meals.
Clear vision up close but blurred vision at a distance indicates insufficient Yang qi invaded by Yin qi. Dingzhi Wan (Dingzhi Pill) should be used, containing Shichangpu (Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii), Yuanzhi (Radix Polygalae), Zhusha (Cinnabar), Renren (Ginseng Radix), and Baifushen (Poria with Hostwood).
[Note] "Neng jin qie yuan" (able to see near but fearful of seeing far) is not congenital myopia. It refers to a condition where, previously asymptomatic, the patient suddenly sees near objects clearly but distant objects dimly. This is caused by excess Yin qi and insufficiency of Yang qi, where Yang is invaded by Yin, preventing the visual brilliance from radiating outward to distant objects. It is appropriate to use Dingzhi Wan to tonify Heart qi and strengthen Shen (spirit); when Shen is sufficient, distant vision will naturally improve.
Formula: Dingzhi Wan (Dingzhi Pill)
Ingredients: Shichangpu (2 liang), Yuanzhi (heart removed, 2 liang), Zhusha (finely ground, set aside, 3 qian), Renren (Ginseng Radix, 1 liang), Baifushen (Poria with Hostwood, 1 liang).
Grind all ingredients into fine powder. Mix with refined honey to form pills the size of tung tree seeds. Coat with Zhusha. Take 50 pills per dose, washed down with rice water after meals.
