癸未孟春关中张玮敬跋
I have heard Zuo Qiuming say: "To eliminate disease, nothing is better than thorough eradication." In my experience of treating eye diseases, I have come to understand the truth of this statement. This serves not only as a warning for patients but also as a mirror for physicians.
I have often seen vulgar practitioners of eye diseases in the world who, lacking access to the true transmission found in Hua Tuo's (Zhenren) *Secret Manual*, exploit the patient's urgency for recovery by administering harsh purgative or attacking agents to achieve immediate results within a day or night. When the disease recurs, they employ the same methods again, often boasting to others, saying, "So-and-so has suffered repeatedly; only I can cure him." The patients, too, harbor gratitude in their hearts, saying, "The Master has saved me many times." By failing to investigate the root cause and seeking only rapid success, these practitioners often lead to chronic, intractable conditions.
However, Mr. Ma Yuncong from Yidu is different. Originally a scholar, he obtained the divine prescriptions of Sun Simiao (Sun Zhenren) in his middle age and subsequently treated eye diseases in the Donghai region. Over fifty years, the number of people who could look up at gold and see the sun and moon has been countless. He had long since carved the woodblocks for his secret pillow formulas (*Zhenzhong Fang*) but had not yet published them as a collected work.
My sister's husband, Wang Mugong, was willing to contribute funds to widely print these works for public dissemination, enabling people to match their conditions with the formulas and achieve miraculous effects immediately. After reviewing the text multiple times, I found that it generally explores the origin and clarifies the subtle details, without seeking speed merely to flatter the world. It truly embodies the principle of "thorough eradication of disease," and its mysterious transmission (metaphorically referred to as received from the Dragon Palace) perfectly highlights the efficacy of its formulation and adjustment.
I suffered from persistent eye disease for many years, fluctuating between remission and exacerbation, and was also deceived by quack doctors. Recently, Mr. gifted me one dose of *Shenlou* [Divine Pavilion Formula], and within a few days, my vision became clear and refreshing. I thanked him joyfully, but he said, "It is not finished. That is what ordinary people say when soliciting thanks. To eradicate the root, one must measure progress in months." Indeed, after regulating breathing and taking medicine for several months, I recovered completely. Mr. said, "The Qi of the five zang organs is now clear, and no residual ailments remain." From then on, seeing green and white were gifts bestowed by Mr. I am deeply grateful for his virtue and wish to share my own treatment experience—that one should not seek quick fixes but rather thorough cure—with my colleagues, so that they may know how beneficial the art of the Confucian physician can be!
In the first month of the Guiwei year, Zhang Wei of Guanzhong respectfully wrote this postscript.
