These herbs are frequently modified, but always remain within this scope. This prescription employs the intent of Shi Wei Wen Dan Tang (Ten-Ingredient Decoction to Warm the Gallbladder), without being rigidly bound by established formulas. For instance, Herba Ligustri Lucidi, Cornu Saigae Tataricae, [text missing], [text missing], [text missing], etc., are also used as appropriate on a temporary basis. After taking dozens of doses of this formula, complete recovery was achieved. To this day, over thirty years later, the formula is treasured, and the patient remains healthy. Is this not difficult to achieve!
(Attached Discussion on Fetal Protection and Childbirth Golden Pill)
Some have said to me: "In discussing symptoms, you should comprehensively investigate the pathogenesis and detail the treatment methods, so that it benefits people. Yet your discussion contains only one or two points; is it not too brief?" I do not know that medical books are numerous enough to fill houses and block ox carts, with no symptom unrecorded and countless methods available. How can one write more books? However, although ancient texts are from famous masters, some theories are biased or dogmatic, which I must refute; quacks are shallow and ignorant, and I fear they harm people, which I must refute; moreover, if I were not effective in treatment and had repeated successful trials, I would not dare to argue recklessly.
Take the field of pregnancy as an example. Women consider this crucial. If infertile for several years, they seek doctors and take medicine, consuming both pastes and pills. Yet not only do they fail to conceive, but other diseases arise, such as irregular menstruation—menstrual flow occurring two or three times a month, or even dripping continuously, leading to metrorrhagia and metrostaxis. Why is this? Generally, physicians prioritize warm and hot herbs. Women also believe that taking many warm herbs will facilitate conception. Unaware that failing to conceive, they have already suffered harm. The way of heaven and earth is that when yin and yang harmonize, all things are born. Solitary yin does not generate; solitary yang does not grow. Using aphrodisiacs to treat men, claiming they aid seed production, has caused endless harm; how can children be born? Even if children are born, the fetal toxicity is severe, and conditions like erysipelas (Chi You Dan) occur repeatedly; even if life is barely prolonged, smallpox makes survival impossible. This is the effect of men taking aphrodisiacs. Yet treating women with this same method causes turbulence in the Sea of Blood, reckless movement of heat in the blood, and irregular menstruation, making pregnancy impossible. In summary, gynecology prioritizes regulating menstruation. Contraction indicates heat; excess indicates cold. If menstruation is delayed and the pulse is slow and soft, it truly belongs to deficiency-cold. A cold constitution cannot receive conception; warming the meridians is acceptable, but such pulse presentations are rare. Most contemporary women suffer from Liver Qi stagnation, and their pulses are often wiry and rapid. Taking warm and hot herbs will inevitably cause Liver Fire to flourish and blood to move recklessly. Is the harm limited to infertility? I have seen women eager for children who love taking warming medicines, while quacks cater to their wishes in prescribing. Ultimately, no child is conceived, yet illness remains. This is truly hateful, hence my refutation reaches this point.
As for those already pregnant who are prone to spontaneous abortion, it mostly occurs within the first three months. People request fetal protection, yet rarely succeed. Why? Quacks do not study books and thus do not understand medical principles. During pregnancy, in the first month, the Foot Jueyin Liver nourishes the fetus; in the second month, the Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder nourishes the fetus; in the third month, the Hand Jueyin Pericardium nourishes the fetus; in the fourth month, the Hand Shaoyang Sanjiao nourishes the fetus. These four meridians all contain Ministerial Fire. Spontaneous abortion is generally caused by Water failing to control Fire, resulting in blood heat. To calm the fetus, one must cool the blood. Although Zhu Danxi prescribed Bai Zhu Powder taken with Huang Qin Decoction for fetal protection, leading to safety, later generations regarded Huang Qin and Bai Zhu as sacred herbs for calming the fetus. Actually, Huang Qin is cool in nature, and Bai Zhu is dry. Around the third month of pregnancy, Fetal Fire and Ministerial Fire are both vigorous. Cooling is suitable; drying is not. Crude practitioners rely solely on these two herbs, sometimes adding Radix Dipsaci, yet see no effect. They do not know that cooling is suitable before birth, especially in the third and fourth months. Treating with drying herbs cannot calm the fetus. Radix Dipsaci is warm and moving. Calming the fetus requires stillness, not movement. Herbs should be judged by their nature, not their names. By the fifth and sixth months, the Foot Taiyin Spleen and Foot Yangming Stomach nourish the fetus. Strengthening the Spleen and Stomach is appropriate, and Danxi's formula might be fully applicable! Danxi would not deceive people, but his formula did not specify months, likely intended for the period when the Spleen and Stomach nourish the fetus. Roughly, twenty-seven days constitute one lunar month of gestation. After three and a half months, the nourishing meridians change. I have performed fetal protection countless times without failure. For example, Ding Zoushi had three miscarriages, Zou Zhaoshi had seven, and Miu Yushi had eleven, all within three months. Later, they entrusted me with fetal protection, resulting in safe deliveries. Subsequent pregnancies after childbirth also occurred without fear of miscarriage. I always use Radix Rehmanniae Preparata as the sovereign herb to nourish and cool the blood, add Huang Qin, and omit Bai Zhu. People praise my skill in fetal protection, but there is no special method. I simply deeply understand the meridions that nourish the fetus and the principle that cooling is required before birth, without adhering rigidly to Danxi's methods. This has been repeatedly verified. Therefore, I discuss it in detail to show my successors, hoping not to transform the art of saving lives into a tool for harming them!
