Discussion on the Treatment of Forty-Seven Strange Diseases
The Heavenly Master said: "Strange treatment" refers to treating with methods other than the ordinary ones. For instance, when a person develops strange diseases in the abdomen, or unusual symptoms on the body, or peculiar formations in the mouth, this is what is meant. Can strange diseases be treated with ordinary medicines? I should treat them with strange medicines. Suppose a "sound-responding worm" suddenly appears in a person's abdomen; what method would be used to treat it? Using insecticides yields no response; using phlegm-resolving drugs yields no response; cooling with cold-natured drugs yields no response; dissipating with heat-natured drugs also yields no response. Then how exactly should it be treated? The ancients had a method where reading from the Materia Medica caused the worm to stop responding, and using this method led to recovery. This is one method of strange treatment. I have another magical treatment method that saves the mental effort of reviewing the Materia Medica. Use only raw Licorice Root (Gancao, 甘草) combined with Alum (Bai Fan, 白矾), in equal parts, totaling no more than two qian. Drink it down, and it will heal immediately. The reason is that the sound-responding entity is not a worm, but rather toxic vapors within the zang-fu organs acting as a nuisance. Licorice Root eliminates toxins, while Alum resolves phlegm. Moreover, these two substances possess benevolence and courage respectively, and I employ wisdom in their use. With wisdom, benevolence, and courage all present, the nuisance naturally bows its head and retreats.
Lord Zhang said: "Wonderful! It is inconceivable."
The Heavenly Master said: "Suppose a 'human-faced sore' suddenly grows on a person's body, possessing complete features such as mouth, nose, and eyes, and even able to eat flesh given to it. Is this not a strange disease? How should it be treated? Some people in the world apply powder of Fritillaria Bulb (Beimu, 贝母) to it, and the human-faced sore heals with a sorrowful expression. People think this is revenge from karmic creditors, but I disagree. It is likely due to a nuisance attaching itself. I have a prescription that is even more strange and effective faster than Fritillaria. The prescription uses three qian of Polyporus Umbellatus Pill (Leiyuan, 雷丸), ground into fine powder, added with one qian of Calomelas (Qingfen, 轻粉) and one qian of Poria Cocos Powder (Fuling, 茯苓). Mix evenly and apply to the affected area for immediate disappearance. (Annotation: Qing-Lei Pill.) Polyporus Umbellatus is best at removing toxins and driving out evil qi. Adding Calomelas allows it to penetrate deep into the bone marrow, leaving nowhere for the evil qi to hide. Poria Cocos is used merely to remove dampness-water qi. The subtlety here is hard to convey in words; I can only explain the profundity of the principle, not fully describe the magic of the treatment.
If a sore suddenly grows on the tongue inside the mouth, protruding over an inch, forming a yellow crust, making eating difficult. People assume the disease is in the Heart, caused by Heart Heat. This sounds reasonable but is incorrect. It is also due to a nuisance attaching itself. The prescription uses one fen of Borneol (Bingpian, 冰片), placed inside a clam shell until it liquefies. Apply this liquid to the sore with a goose feather quill; the tongue will retract immediately, allowing eating. Clams are extreme Yin substances; using extreme Yin to attack extreme Yin evil causes the evil to retreat. Furthermore, Borneol's acrid-warm nature drives out evil without sparing effort, ensuring success upon application.
If a red line grows in the nose, about a chi long, causing excruciating pain upon slight movement. People attribute this to alcohol consumption, but I disagree. It is also a nuisance. The prescription uses one fen of Borax (Pengsha, 硼砂) and one fen of Borneol, ground into powder, mixed with human milk, and gently dotted onto the middle of the red line. (Annotation: Bing-Sha Dan.) Suddenly, it feels as if someone punched the patient, and the line disappears instantly. A truly miraculous prescription. Borax is also a substance that expels nuisances.
Hearing the sound of ants fighting in the ears is not due to a nuisance, but rather the exhaustion of Kidney Water compounded by Liver injury from anger. The prescription uses three liang of White Peony Root (Baishao, 白芍), three qian of Bupleurum Root (Chaihu, 柴胡), three qian of Gardenia Fruit (Zhizi, 栀子), three liang of Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shudi, 熟地), three liang of Cornus Officinalis Fruit (Shanzhuyu, 山茱萸), one liang of Ophiopogon Tuber (Maidong, 麦冬), and three qian of White Mustard Seed (Baijiezi, 白芥子). Decoct in water and take orally. (Annotation: Zhi-Xuan Dan.) The formula consists entirely of sage medicines for tonifying the Kidney and soothing the Liver. After taking it for several days, the fighting sound gradually fades, and full recovery occurs after one month. This is a strange disease treated with a balanced formula.
Itching in the ears, where scratching with wood is insufficient, requiring stabbing with an iron knife to the bottom producing a ringing sound for relief, otherwise unbearable itching. This is Fire from the Kidney and Liver condensing into a hard base in the ear, unrescuable by decoctions. I prescribe: one qian of Dragon Bone (Longgu, 龙骨), one stick of Gleditsia Sinensis Thorn (Zaojiaoci, 皂角刺), burnt to ash retaining properties, three fen of Borneol, and one male rat gallbladder. First, grind the former ingredients into powder. Then mix with rat gallbladder juice, and further blend with human milk to form a thick paste. (Annotation: Shou-Yang Dan.) Smear this entire mixture into the ear canal. It will inevitably cause intense itching; someone must hold the patient's hands until the itching subsides and healing occurs. Post-recovery, take thirty jin of Liuwei Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia). If a person suddenly sees ghosts without cause—such as three-headed six-armed figures, golden-armored deities, decapitated dead ghosts, or varying colors like black, white, green, or red—these are all strange diseases. However, these are all due to Heart Deficiency allowing nuisances to attach. The prescription uses three liang of Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Baizhu, 白术), three liang of Atractylodes Lancea Rhizome (Cangzhu, 苍术), one qian of Aconite Lateralis Radix Preparata (Fuzi, 附子), one liang of Pinellia Tuber (Banxia, 半夏), three qian of Arisaema Cum Bile (Tiannanxing, 天南星), one liang of Euphorbia Lathyris Root (Daji, 大戟), and one liang of Fritillaria Cirrhosa Bulb (Shancigu, 山茨菇). Grind each into fine powder, add one qian of Musk (Shexiang, 麝香), grind again, and form into cakes similar to Yushu Dan. (Annotation: Shishi Mi Dan.) This formula is superior to Zijin Ding. For the aforementioned conditions, dissolve one cake in ginger soup and drink; it will induce vomiting of approximately one bowl of stubborn phlegm, leading to cure.
Furthermore, if spirits like Shanxiao, Muke, foxes, insects, or snakes possess the body. The prescription uses raw Tung Oil (Tengtongyou, 桐油) applied to the lower body's private areas, which is excellent. However, I have an even stranger method: wrap the patient's own underwear around the head, and the demon will laugh loudly and leave, never to return. Demons seek to steal human essence but love cleanliness; seeing dirty cloth wrapped on the head indicates uncleanness, so they abandon the person. This exploits their preference for cleanliness to disrupt them. Objects lacking spirit that press down on people during sleep are also treated this way.
If a crack opens on the back spine, releasing over a thousand lice, this is Wind in the Kidney blown by Yang Qi, causing rupture and lice emergence. The prescription uses three liang of Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shudi, 熟地), three liang of Cornus Officinalis Fruit (Shanzhuyu, 山茱萸), one liang of Eucommia Bark (Duzhong, 杜仲), five qian of Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Baizhu, 白术), one qian of Stephania Tetrandra Root (Fangji, 防己), and three qian of Qiancao (Qiancao, 签草). (Annotation: Huo-Shui Zhi-Shi Dan.) Two doses will kill all lice and close the crack.
Lord Zhang said: "These formulas are wonderfully strange. For lice emerging from spinal cracks, my formula uses three castor beans (Bimazi, 蓖麻), ground into paste, mixed with three red dates pounded into pills the size of marbles. Burn them to smoke the clothes; lice die and the crack heals. Also a very strange formula. Castor seeds kill lice and dispel wind; once lice are gone and wind exits, the crack closes naturally."
The Heavenly Master said: "If feces exit via urine and urine via feces, this is a summer heat syndrome. Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) is effective, but I have a stranger formula. Use only three liang of Plantago Seed (Cheqianzi, 车前子), decoct in three bowls of water, and drink in one go for immediate cure.
Snakes growing in the abdomen result from toxic vapors transforming, or contracting mountain mist/water overflow qi, four-season abnormal qi, corpse qi, or disease qi. The prescription uses one liang of Realgar (Xionghuang, 雄黄), five qian of Angelica Dahurica Root (Baizhi, 白芷), and two liang of Raw Licorice Root (Gancao, 甘草). Grind into powder, prepare pills on the Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu), bind with sticky rice from zongzi, size of large tung nuts. Take before meals; pain will follow, endure it forcefully, do NOT drink water, or efficacy is lost. Remember this well.
Lord Zhang said: "Abdominal snakes can be identified by the body becoming dry as firewood, appearing scaly. This is snake poison, easy to identify. I have another highly effective formula: Pills made solely of Angelica Dahurica Root (Baizhi, 白芷). Take five qian daily with rice water for full recovery.
The Heavenly Master said: "Turtles growing in the abdomen occur from overeating during hunger/fullness cycles, unable to digest instantly, generating turtle-shell-like worms resembling turtles but not true turtles. Use the previous formula plus one bowl of horse urine and half he of human urine (child's urine is best); drink to dissolve instantly. Realgar kills snakes, Angelica Dahurica Root rots snakes, Licorice Root removes toxins, and horse urine dissolves turtles. Hence, immediate effect. This is strange disease treated with strange medicine.
Birds or sparrows growing on the head or arms, covered by skin, sometimes tumor-like, emitting bird sounds, crying at dawn, calling in rain/cold/hunger, unresponsive to hundred medicines. Must cut open the skin to reveal the bird-like form (without feathers) exiting the hole. Apply Shengji San (Generate Flesh Powder) post-extraction, cover with Sheng Gao (Divine Ointment); heals in three days. This results from disrespecting spiritual ways. I have seen this multiple times. Bian Que’s treatments and Hua Tuo’s medical skills were taught by me.
Generalized nodules or tumors resembling mushrooms, agarics, or wood ear fungus throughout the body, caused by Damp-Heat, eventually bursting and bleeding to death. First wash externally, then resolve internally. External wash: one jin of Xanthium Strumarium Herb (Cang'ercao, 苍耳子草), three liang of Schizonepeta Spike (Jingjie, 荆芥), three liang of Sophora Root (Kushen, 苦参), three liang of Angelica Dahurica Root (Baizhi, 白芷). Decoct in a large pot, pour into bath tub, surround with mats. Steam when hot, wash when warm, stop when cool. (Annotation: Xiao-Shi Tang.) After three days, use internal decoction: five qian of Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Baizhu, 白术), one liang of Coix Seed (Yiren, 薏仁), five qian of Euryale Seed (Qianshi, 芡实), one liang of Ginseng Root (Renshen, 人参), three qian of Yinchen Artemisiae Herba (Yinchen, 茵陈), three qian of White Mustard Seed (Baijiezi, 白芥子), three qian of Pinellia Tuber (Banxia, 半夏), three qian of Alisma Rhizome (Zexie, 泽泻), one qian of Aconite Lateralis Radix Preparata (Fuzi, 附子), three qian of Scutellaria Root (Huangqin, 黄芩). Decoct and take. (Annotation: Hong-Huang Pi-Li San.) Ten consecutive doses ensure complete resolution internally and externally.
Abdominal distension resembling pregnancy, emaciation, dark face, withered bones/hair, indicates Ghost Fetus. Prescription: half jin of Safflower Flower (Honghua, 红花), five qian of Rhubarb Root (Dahuang, 大黄), three qian of Polyporus Umbellatus Pill (Leiyuan, 雷丸). Decoct and take. Expelling hundreds of chicken-liver-sized blood clots cures it. Afterwards, regulate with Liujunzi Tang (Six-Gentlemen Decoction) for natural restoration. Such diseases arise from sudden lustful thoughts attracting entities. Whether virgin or married, when evil gathers, Qi is deficient; coupled with lust, evil naturally attaches. The formula’s brilliance lies in using Safflower Flower as Sovereign herb in large quantity (half jin) to promote blood flow vigorously, aided by Rhubarb’s moving nature and Polyporus Umbellatus’ evil-dispersing property, ensuring rapid success.
Sore on forehead/temples causing heavy head day one, turning blue-purple day two, spreading to body causing death day three. This is toxic vapors attacking the Heart, often from excessive aphrodisiac use. Aphrodisiacs contain extreme heat (Aconite, Yangqishi/Calcitum) to induce strong yang. These are highly toxic and drying, consuming fluids. Excessive sexual activity moves Qi/blood, leading to massive depletion, increasing Fire. Long-term indulgence creates great toxicity; Fire flares upward to Taiyang regions. Initial symptom: heavy head. Urgently decoct one jin of Honeysuckle Flower (Jinyinhua, 金银花), drink dozens of bowls to mitigate toxin and save life, though ulceration may persist.
