On Palpitations, Restlessness, and Insomnia at Night; On Spermatorrhea, Nocturnal Emission, and Loss of Control upon Seeing Beauty
The Heavenly Master said: The "Fundamental Treatment" (Ben Zhi) refers to the method of treating the Heart and Kidney. Without the Heart, one cannot achieve tranquility and far-reaching vision; without the Kidney, one cannot perform strenuous tasks or reproduce. Therefore, tonifying the Heart must involve tonifying the Kidney, and tonifying the Kidney must involve tonifying the Heart. These two meridians are the masters of the body and the roots of the Zang-Fu organs. Thus, when a person suffers from palpitations and restlessness, or inability to sleep at night, people assume it is a disease of the Heart; but who knows that it is not a Heart disease, but a Kidney disease? When a person sees beauty and desires intercourse, yet loses control (metaphorically "turning their spear around"), or suffers from nocturnal emission and spermatorrhea, people assume it is a disease of the Kidney; but who knows that it is not a Kidney disease, but a Heart disease? Consequently, to calm the mind, one should treat the Kidney; to treat the Kidney, one should treat the Heart.
Formula for Treating the Heart: Use Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) 3 liang, Fu Ling (Poria) 3 liang, Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood) 3 liang, Yuan Zhi (Polygala Root) 2 liang, Sheng Zao Ren (Raw Ziziphus Seed) 1 liang, Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root) 3 liang, Shan Zhu Yu (Cornus Fruit) 3 liang, Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root) 3 liang, Chang Pu (Acorus Rhizome) 3 qian, Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome) 5 qian, Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark) 5 qian, Bai Jie Zi (White Mustard Seed) 1 liang, Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber) 3 liang, Sha Ren (Amomum Fruit) 5 qian. Grind each into powder, and form pills with honey. Take 5 qian daily, administered with wine or decoction. This formula treats Heart palpitations and insomnia. Logically, using Ren Shen, Fu Ling, Dang Gui, and Mai Dong would suffice; even if insomnia is caused by fire, adding Huang Lian would be enough. Why use Shu Di and Shan Zhu Yu, which tonify the Kidney, and add Rou Gui to assist fire? It is unknown that palpitations occur because Kidney Qi does not enter the Heart; insomnia occurs because Heart Qi does not return to the Kidney. Now, by using Shu Di and Shan Zhu Yu to tonify the Kidney, the Kidney Qi gains a root and naturally ascends to connect with the Heart; by using Rou Gui to tonify the Fire of the Ming Men (Gate of Life), the Kidney Qi becomes warm, and the Minister Fire gains authority. Thus, Heart Qi descends, the Sovereign Fire and Minister Fire harmonize, and naturally the upper and lower parts share one heart, with Sovereign and Minister acting in virtue together.
Formula for Treating the Kidney: For spermatorrhea, nocturnal emission, and loss of control upon seeing beauty, this indicates the gate is not secure, and the Kidney has lost its power of opening and closing. However, who knows that all this stems from the deficiency of the Sovereign Heart, leading to the usurpation of power by the Minister Fire? The formula uses Shu Di Huang 8 liang, Shan Yao (Dioscorea Rhizome) 4 liang, Shan Zhu Yu 4 liang, Fu Ling 3 liang, Rou Gui 1 liang, Fu Zi (Aconite Lateral Root) 1 piece, Ren Shen 3 liang, Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Rhizome) 4 liang, Bei Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Berry) 1 liang, Mai Dong 3 liang, Yuan Zhi 1 liang, Chao Zao Ren (Fried Ziziphus Seed) 1 liang, Lu Rong (Deer Antler Velvet) 1 pair, Ba Ji Tian (Morinda Root) 3 liang, Rou Cong Rong (Cistanche Stem) 3 liang, Bai Zi Ren (Biota Seed) 1 liang, Sha Ren 5 qian, Zi He Che (Placenta Hominis) 1 pair, Du Zhong (Eucommia Bark) 1 liang, Po Gu Zhi (Kochia Seed/Burkholdia Seed) 1 liang. Grind each into powder, and form pills with honey. This formula uses Shu Di, Shan Yu, Du Zhong, Shan Yao, etc., to tonify the Kidney; Ba Ji Tian, Rou Cong Rong, Fu Zi, Lu Rong, etc., to tonify the Fire within the Kidney. One might think this is sufficient; but why must Ren Shen, Fu Ling, Bai Zi Ren, Mai Dong, Yuan Zhi, and Zao Ren be added? It is because the deficiency of Fire in the Kidney stems from the prior deficiency of Fire in the Heart. Therefore, to tonify Kidney Fire, one must first tonify Heart Fire. If Heart Fire is not tonified, Kidney Fire cannot ultimately be benefited, and instead, the dryness of the Upper Jiao will increase. Thus, one must simultaneously tonify the Heart, allowing Heart Qi to descend comfortably into the Kidney, and Kidney Qi to ascend to the Heart. Then Water and Fire will mutually assist, Sovereign and Minister will be harmonious, the people will be secure, Lung Qi will be clear and tranquil, Spleen and Stomach will be nourished, and the Three Jiao will be regulated. One may well sharpen weapons again; even fighting in the wild can achieve success.
Lord Zhang said: I have one word to praise its profundity. The Fundamental Treatment focuses on the Heart and Kidney; what doubt is there? However, the Heart cannot be merely supplemented by tonifying the Kidney, nor the Kidney merely by tonifying the Heart. For example, in cases of palpitations and insomnia, although it is due to Kidney Qi not ascending to the Heart, it also involves Liver Qi not ascending to generate the Heart. Therefore, within tonifying the Kidney, it is appropriate to add herbs that tonify the Liver. The previous formula contains Dang Gui and Rou Gui, which are also herbs for tonifying the Liver, but they are not directly entering the Liver Meridian. My opinion is to add Bai Shao (White Peony Root) 3 liang to the previous formula. This tonifies both the Kidney and the Liver, generating Heart Fire through mutual generation. Would the Heart not then be peaceful? Although using Heart-tonifying herbs for Kidney deficiency is correct, if one tonifies the Heart without tonifying the Liver, Liver Wood becomes stagnant, making it difficult for the Heart to descend. My opinion is that Bai Shao 3 liang should also be added to the Kidney-tonifying formula. Then Liver Qi will naturally relax, generating the Fire of the Pericardium, and sufficient Fire will naturally generate the Fire of the Ming Men. This can be questioned to the Heavenly Master Qiji to decide whether to retain or remove it. [Commentary: Lei Gong said: The Heavenly Master's formula is indeed wonderful, and Lord Zhang's discussion is also excellent.]
Lord Hua said: I once heard this from my teacher. There is another wonderful formula, transmitted here as well. For anyone unable to sleep peacefully, use Ren Shen 5 liang, Yuan Zhi 2 liang, Chao Zao Ren 2 liang, Shu Di Huang 8 liang, Shan Zhu Yu 4 liang, Fu Shen 3 liang, Bai Zi Ren 1 liang, Mai Dong 3 liang, Chen Pi (Tangerine Peel) 5 qian. Grind each into powder, and form pills with honey. Take 2 liang daily with plain boiled water. Peace will be achieved in five days, and full recovery after one course. It is named Ning Shen An Wo Wan (Calming Spirit and Promoting Sleep Pill). For those with nocturnal emission, use Shu Di Huang 1 jin, Shan Yao 1 jin, Qian Shi (Euryale Seed) 1 jin, Sheng Zao Ren 5 liang, Ba Ji Tian 2 liang, Mai Dong 3 liang, Bei Wu Wei Zi 3 liang, Lian Zi (Lotus Seed) 0.5 jin. Process them together, grind into powder, and form pills with honey. Take 1 liang daily with plain boiled water. It is named Yi Xin Zhi Yi Wan (Benefit Heart and Stop Emission Pill). The former formula tonifies the Heart while supplementing the Kidney; the latter tonifies the Kidney while supplementing the Heart. This agrees with the Heavenly Master's transmitted formula. Both formulas were also transmitted by the Heavenly Master; I do not know why they differ, yet all four formulas are wondrous and connect to the Primordial Qi. The teacher's profundity is truly unfathomable. Ba Ji Tian not only strengthens Yang but also stops essence; Kidney Water cannot be generated without Fire, nor can it be secured without Fire. If one uses Da Re (greatly hot) substances like Rou Gui and Fu Zi, it will indeed assist deficient fire. Ba Ji Tian is not greatly hot; it cannot warm the interior, so what harm is there in using it among purely Yin substances? Instead, it achieves the功 of Mutual Assistance (Ji Ji).
Sun Taizhen (Sun Simiao) transmitted a formula for treating palpitations and restlessness. Palpitations are not a Heart disease, but rather Liver Blood deficiency failing to nourish the Heart. The formula uses Bai Shao 5 qian, Dang Gui 5 qian, Shu Di Huang 5 qian, Sheng Zao Ren 1 liang, Yuan Zhi 1 qian, Fu Shen 3 qian, Mai Dong 5 qian, Bei Wu Wei Zi 1 qian, Ren Shen 2 qian. Decoct in water and take orally. [Commentary: The Heavenly Master said: The wonder of this formula lies in using Sheng Zao Ren up to 1 liang.] The wonder of this formula does not lie entirely in treating the Heart. Treating the Liver is precisely how one treats the Heart; treating the Lung is also how one benefits the Heart.
Another formula transmitted for treating loss of control upon seeing beauty: Use Ren Shen 3 liang, Shu Di Huang 8 liang, Huang Bo (Phellodendron Bark) 5 liang, Bai Zhu 8 liang, Rou Gui 2 liang, Shan Zhu Yu 3 liang, Ba Ji Tian 5 liang, Rou Cong Rong 3 liang, Mai Dong 5 liang, Bei Wu Wei Zi 1 liang, Fu Pen Zi (Raspberry Fruit) 5 liang. Grind each into powder, and form pills with honey. [Commentary: Also stated: This formula should not be lightly transmitted; keeping it is sufficient.] Take 1 liang with wine when half-hungry. After one month, sexual function will improve significantly. However, do not transmit it to unworthy persons.
