[Methods of Treating the Skin and Hair]
On Scabies, Impetigo (Yellow Water Sore), Prickly Heat, and Purple-White Vitiligo
The Heavenly Master said: The method of treating the skin and hair refers to conditions where the pathogenic factor is light and has not deeply penetrated the Ying (Nutrient) and Wei (Defensive) levels. Therefore, treatment is applied from the level of the skin and hair. Examples include scabies, impetigo (yellow water sore), and prickly heat. For such conditions, decoctions need not be used. For scabies, use 1 qian of Calomel (Qingfen), 3 qian of crushed oil walnut kernels (do not remove the oily membrane), 3 qian of pork back fat, 2 qian of powdered Cynanchum atratum (Baiwei), 1 qian of powdered Saposhnikovia divaricata (Fangfeng), and 1 qian of powdered Perilla leaf (Suye). Pounded into pills the size of a bullet, rub onto the affected area; it will heal in one day.
Impetigo (Huangshichuang): Whenever toxic fluid flows to any part of the body, large blister-like sores appear, which are called impetigo. They rupture with slight touch. This is caused by heat-toxin stagnating in the skin and hair. It should be washed with a decoction to heal. The formula uses 5 qian of Realgar (Xionghuang) and 5 qian of Saposhnikovia divaricata (Fangfeng). Boil these two ingredients in ten bowls of water for several boils, strain the dregs, and take the juice to wash the sores; they will heal.
Prickly Heat (Feichuang): Generated by heat injury from summer heat. Washing with snow water is even better, and the rash disappears as it is washed. If snow water is unavailable, there is an excellent formula: slice cucumber and rub it on the affected area; it will heal. These are all methods of treating from the skin and hair level.
Master Zhang said: Vitiligo (Baifudian) and purple vitiligo (Zidianfeng) occur when people, during hot summer days, unknowingly use towels exposed to sunlight to wipe sweat from their bodies, causing this disease. It is harmless but difficult to cure. The formula uses 1 liang of Xanthium fruit (Cangerzi), 3 qian of Saposhnikovia divaricata (Fangfeng), and 3 liang of Phellodendron bark (Huangbai). Grind into fine powder, make pills with water. Take 3 qian daily in the morning with rice soup. One course of treatment will ensure a cure. This is a miraculous formula, effective for both purple and white vitiligo.
[Methods of Treating the Flesh/Skin]
On Crusted Eczema, Acne, Stubborn Tinea, Frostbite, and Sitting Sores
The Heavenly Master said: Although flesh/skin belongs to the category of skin and hair, each has its own treatment methods. Diseases of the flesh/skin emerge from the Couli (interstices/pores), slightly deeper than those of the superficial skin and hair. Examples include crusted eczema, acne, and stubborn tinea. However, these are all due to disharmony of Qi and Blood, allowing parasites/worms to generate. By activating Qi and Blood, the disease heals itself.
For crusted eczema, use 3 qian of Angelica sinensis (Danggui), 3 qian of Rehmannia glutinosa prepared with wine (Shudihuang), 3 qian of fresh Rehmannia root (Shengdihuang), 3 qian of White Peony Root (Baishao), 3 qian of Ophiopogon japonicus (Maidong), 3 qian of Asparagus cochinchinensis (Tianmendong), 1 qian of Ligusticum chuanxiong (Chuanxiong), 3 qian of Poria cocos (Fuling), 1 qian of Licorice root (Gancao), 1 qian of Bupleurum chinense (Chaihu), 1 qian of Ginseng (Renshen), 3 qian of Atractylodes macrocephala (Baizhu), 5 qian of Scutellaria baicalensis (Huangqin), 1 qian of Schizonepeta (Jingjie), and 5 qian of Coix seed (Yiren). Decoct in water and take orally. The brilliance of this formula lies in using herbs that tonify Qi and Blood, while slightly using Bupleurum and Schizonepeta to vent and release. Take four doses first; the sores will inevitably swell and suppurate completely. After four doses, remove Bupleurum, add five grains of Schisandra chinensis (Wuweizi), and take another four doses; then the sores all over the body will be cleared away like sweeping.
Acne symptoms arise from lung heat combined with wind exposure, often forming these thorn-like bumps. Although not life-threatening, scholars and delicate young women often suffer from this, which detracts from their elegance. I leave a formula to enhance appearance, which is acceptable. The formula uses 1 qian of Calomel (Qingfen), 1 qian of Scutellaria baicalensis (Huangqin), 1 qian of Angelica dahurica (Baizhi), 1 qian of Typhonium rhizome (Baifuzi), and 1 qian of Saposhnikovia divaricata (Fangfeng). Grind each into fine powder, mix with honey to form pills. Rub multiple times during daily face washing, and again after thoroughly washing the face before sleep. Within three days, scars and marks will naturally disappear.
The formula for stubborn tinea is the most difficult to manage, but once treated by me, results are easily achieved. The formula uses 1 liang of Melia azedarach bark (Lianshupi), 1 liang of Cynanchum atratum (Baiwei), 3 qian of Calomel (Qingfen), 1 qian of Borneol (Bingpian), 1 qian of raw Licorice root (Shengancao), 3 qian of Snail (Woniu, baked dry, shell included), and 1 liang of Polygonum multiflorum root/stem (Du Dahuanggen). Grind all into fine powder. First, scrape the tinea skin with crushed lychee shells, then apply the powder mixed with sesame oil. It will scab and heal in three days. These are methods for treating the flesh/skin, serving as a model.
Master Zhang said: Frostbite occurs because humans cannot tolerate cold; the skin and flesh freeze, and upon sudden exposure to fire heat, frostbite forms. For frostbite on the ears, if one tries to warm it with hands, it may turn into a sore. The formula uses feces of a yellow dog that has been left outdoors until turning white, calcined over charcoal fire into powder, mixed with calcined alum (Duanshi). Use aged dog feces, stir-fried, in equal parts. Mix with sesame oil and apply. Even if the sore is ulcerated, applying this immediately stops pain and generates flesh. This is a miraculous formula. If the ears or face are frozen but have not formed sores, do not use this medicine; simply wash with a decoction of Schizonepeta (Jingjie); it will heal in three days.
Sitting sores are also diseases of the flesh/skin. Simply use 1 qian of Calomel (Qingfen), 3 qian of Radish seeds (Luobozhong), half a qian of Borneol (Bingpian), and fourteen apricot kernels (Xingren) with skin and tips removed. Grind into powder. Rub onto the sore with hand; it will heal in one day. Miraculous and extraordinary, nothing surpasses it.
